    Rasmus Højlund is on the verge to a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United agreeing personal terms with the Danish striker.
    After a long summer searching for a number 9, Erik ten Hag looks to have landed on the Atalanta forward who at just 20 years of age is one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
    One stumbling block however is the transfer fee - with the Italian club previously placing a €100 million price tag on the player. With 10 goals in 34 games last season, is he worth the massive fee?
    Jon Mackenzie takes a look at the player and if he is the right solution to Man United’s goalscoring problems.

    This is a perfect explanation of why upfront fees, which are always huge numbers now, aren't everything. I remember the Nunez vs Haaland comparison last year and it's a bit unfair because I bet Nunez is paid like a young exciting player who could make it big, not a player who's already world class like Haaland is and that changes the picture entirely. Great analysis! Something you didn't quite compare (but suggested so), was the value difference in signing a 20 year old vs a 24/25 year old. If he has some success, you'd expect a new contract and a stay of 7/8 years, at least (although it can obviously all go horrible wrong 😅). If you buy a older player the fee/salary really needs to perform immediately, whereas the signing him on a new contract when he's 24/25, you're getting even more value. All hypothetical crap of course.
    At this point I'd definitely want Hojlund at Man United. Obviously there has been a bit of a recruitment issue in that area, re Ronaldo but a lot relating to Greenwood as well. We've ended up with 1 player who can actually play that role, and he's mostly injured. Saw Sancho play a deep forward in pre season, made me curious if that's something he might try this year...

    Having a striker is better than having no striker. That's man utd in a nut shell. Anyone could have an impact, even an ighalo or Aboubakar with consistent game play can score 12+ league goals.

    I think that you are getting this wrong, Man United shouldn't sign a striker who constantly gets in behind and takes many shots because that is what Marcus Rashford does for the team. They should instead sign a striker like Hojlund or Kolo Muani who is better at linking up play and combining with the other forward players and still pops up with around 15 goals in a 38 game season. The ideal option would have of course been Kane who can be amazing at dropping deep and linking play and still score around 30 goals in all competitions.

    Super interesting, but not sure I completely agree on the financials. DeGea's release does mean that the money can be spread to other players (FFP and budget). This needs to account for: Rashford's new contact increase, Onana's transfer+pay, Mount's... etc... Of course there should be an increase in revenue this year (CL vs Europa), so this helps. This does point that ManU needs to sell a bit more players. And they have sold/released a few other players: Jones, Bailey, Tuanzebe, Teles (no pullback's Saudi League!!!), but a bit more need to leave. ManU have lost money since the pandemic, if I remember (yeah, yeah, F the Glazers).

Also, Manchester United could have activated the optional final year in his contract and they initially made provision in their books regarding his salary. The fact that they didn`t sign the contract saved Manchester United around 20M (375 x 52) which was re-injected in this transfer market.

    You are such a brilliant analyst, it's crazy you're not working for some big club.
    You've also improved immensely in your presentation style and developed into a fantastic "explainer".

    Fantastic content and amazing analytics and insight. I'm ok with Højlund now😅, initially i wasn't because of the enormous fee for his delivery last year. But i see the logic in this and the risk analysis for Manchester United makes total sense. Kane or Osimhen would be too expensive, even though Kane would certainly guarantee the goals and the price money

    Onana cost £44 million 5 year contract so divide 44 by 5 is £8.8 million a year with wages of £100,000 per week so £5.2 million a year so Onana will cost £14 million a year. De Gea wages were £19.5 million per year so we are saving £5.5 million a year on Onana.

    • @shaungarlick4448
      @shaungarlick4448 ปีที่แล้ว

      So signing Onana and Hojlund will only cost Manchester United around £11-12 million a year with the deduction of De Gea wages.

    TBH I believe the best option for MU is a year long loan with buy option. Money seems to be short, no sales yet, so a buy will take some time and ETH could use that time in pre season. Also it'd be better to see how he does in EPL football before paying 60M+

    Brilliant break up Joe, your videos are insightful as usual . It's madness that the club would be be playing approximately 60m for him even with the low wage when there is no guarantee of goals and that's the only marker in this conversation. Evan fergusson probably would be a better bet

  • @chicofoxo

    Though the assumption is Hojland doesn't degrade in performance like so many players do when they join Man Utd. Maguire, Sancho, Zaha, Depay, Van de Beek come to mind. Even on a "lower wage" - the issue with Man Utd is their "lower" wage is still the highest earner for many clubs, and what happens is then you can't sell them as no one can offer the same wage and so they just stagnate. You can't buy someone else until their contract runs down.

    Great video, a great stat to add would be what each signing would represent in terms of their allowable spend according to FFP and their expected revenue.
    ALSO, can you please do EXACTLY this video, but explaining how Tottenham could be financially better off letting Kane leave for free next summer vs selling him for £80m this summer (via an improved finish vs a realistic replacement)?

    • @jaskiratuppal6935
      @jaskiratuppal6935 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Realistic answer: Let him go abroad for 100 mil. Doesn't need to be complex. Postecoglu even if he was as good as Pep wouldn't be able to guarantee top 4 with the state of the club. Meaning Tottenham still lose out on champions league money. Infact you guys could sell Kane, get Hojlund and let the team develop under Ange.
      The financial analysis has been done for you here itself.

    Definitely not worth over 50m-not yet. We will be gambling by buying an unproven striker for that kind of price. We will need another striker who will score 20+ goals if we buy him. Maybe we should loan Ivan Toney in January, if possible.
