+Zac Youngson e-gear is terrible, at least the first generations were (in early Murcielago and Gallardo). The Aventador and late-model Gallardo's have it sorted, but it's still unreliable compared to a manual. That's why a bunch of 1000-2000hp Gallardo's have manual trannies, just as strong as the e-gear but doesn't burn clutch.
I love how at 3:18 Matt lets the twin-turbo get in a few words. Phenomenal video. At first I thought the music was too loud but then the twin-turbo shut me the hell up.
I went to heffners shop a month ago and saw this exact car on the lift.. talked to Jason about what I need to do for my future in autos.. he's a great dude
Jimmy Metcalf when you have that much boosted WHP the header is gonna belavate in reference to the cam shafts, causing the clutch to occilate left and right while mid shift, once the psi ejects from the valve, you will have some slipping but it's counteracted by the fuel ECU and the ignition systems. the XULF capasitor will compensate for the fact I am making all of this up, I don't know shit about cars. Hope this helped you man.
This isn't true everywhere, but if you are raised in the US and are able to go to high school and college, you are fully capable of owning such a car in your early 30's. Even late twenties. Anyone can do that if they work hard and smart enough.
5571350M8 yup I live, well work in Silicon Valley, most of my friends and myself make at least a 100k a year. We are in our early to mid 20s, so by late 20s if we aren't married a 150k car is not a problem at all. Cost of living here is very high, a shitty house cost a million, I pay 2500 a month for a decent studio. I have my own company and I claim a salary of 120k a year, after taxes I get 80k Aprox. USA and it's fuckin taxes.
So, is he really trying to say the Gallardo is a nice car to beef up because it costs "just" 100k? Fair point, I've got some change lying around here, should add up to 100k easily...
Compared to other cars, yes. Aventaors cost more than a 2000 hp Gallardo base price. Jaguars, Aston Martins, and other cars like that are already too well tuned to mod. And given their stock performance, Gallardos can be built up quite easily nowadays, given all the R&D put into them in the last 5 years.
No, we are not comparing cars based on cost and horsepower. We are comparing the Supra, which started the big turbo power craze with kids and young adults in the early 2000's with the Lamborghini, which is the kind of car those people like to tune once they grow up and get some real money. I thought we made that perfectly clear.
musto (Big Muscle) is a Quarter 2/Quarter 4 show. He'll be back in October. Tuned is on Quarter 1/Quarter 3. We alternate, which helps, since The Smoking Tire crew shoots both shows.
900hp Lambo in 2012 was up there. There are street driven 2200hp+ Corvettes, GTRs, Lambos etc. around these days. What will 2018 bring us, 3000hp street cars?
+C Genious Well, seeing how he's only running this example at 7psi (for some reason) I know that this particular car is capable of quite more if it was just retuned.
We've said this a million times. Underground wasn't interested in working with us, and Heffner, being the first one to TT a modern lambo, is the better story.
It was slipping a bit, but that's because the car had nearly 20,000 miles on it since the kit was installed with a stock clutch, and he tracks the car often. He wanted to let me kick the shit out of it for a day before swapping the new clutch in.
the things you're asking for are unreasonable given our budgets. And that's not what our show is about. The show is about the story of these tuning companies and their products. We don't focus on the car itself, more on what the tuner has done to it. The Gallardo is old news, so nothing that's stock on it is worth mentioning. The only thing we're focusing on is the power upgrade, and there's only so much room on public roads when you can hit 150 mph in 10 seconds. Tracks are too expensive.
we want to work with people who want to work with us. All the shops we've worked with have generated business as a direct result of us showcasing their products, no matter what I say about them, and we make it a priority to respect their cars and drive them (more or less) responsibly. If a shop doesn't want to work with us, it's their loss. But it's really annoying when people keep bitching about why we didn't go to UGR, as if I wouldn't make that phone call or don't know who they are.
i love how matt is talking about the big boys SUPRAS , how much power can you make on them , and how the supra is still popular today . driving a 900 hp lambo is sick , driving a 1200 hp supra is ever sicker.
From the perspective of a Heffner and UGR Gallardo owner, The Heffner blows me away in performance and is a thousand times better than my UGR lambo. My UGR lambo is a stage 2R Gallardo and has nowhere near the capabilities of the Heffner. The 2R lambo has broken 6 times and I expect more in the future unfortunately. If anyone asks, it may be much less powerful, but the Heffner is waaaaay better in every aspect.
2) It is slipping a bit. This car had 20,000 miles on it, about half of them track, on the original clutch. Heffner was going to swap the clutch out, but let me kick the shit out of the car first so he could give it back to the customer freshy-fresh. 3) The lag isn't that bad. Lambo's are high revving cars anyway, and the TT's boost curve matches it well. Peak torque is around 4,000 RPM, which is where things start to get fun in a stock engine anyway.
i went to Heffners shop in MD back in the mid 90's for a dyno day..hell of a nice guy and he had some sick Vipers in his shop back then..what he was known for at the time. Could see his attention to detail and passion back then strapping our little imports down hour after hour and getting the best numbers out of them. Glad to see his business and name has grown and he is going great. He'll get my lambo when my lottery #'s hit. :-)
and by the way, it really pisses me off when we go all the way across the country, spend our time and our money making these films, with 7 years of car reviewing experience behind it, only to hear a commenter say they want to see Chris Harris drive it.
we have a sendheiser studio microphone on an XLR cable on the exhaust while I'm driving, on input 2 on the HPX170, with my sendheiser wireless lav on input 1. Tom does a great job of balancing it out.
I've also seen many stock Gallardo's that have beroken down. Unless the engines have broken down directly due to too much boost (basically grenaded?), it may have nothing to do with the modifications. Those E.Gear systems blow hydraulic lines all the time.
the suepension is stock, and then engine allows you to go way faster than normally acceptable. it's good in the corners, but its highlight is straight line speed.
this car is tracked on road courses almost every weekend, and the clutch is starting to slip a bit on hard pulls at about 20,000 miles. Heffner replaced it after we kicked the shit out of it for a day.
Mr. Heffner is a genius, he understands that you don't always need 12-1300whp he understands reliability is key, and theres no point in making power if you can't enjoy it.
absolutely not, unless either a) I'm driving well below the speed limit, which would defeat the purpose of what you're asking for or b) I'm on a race track. I could be held criminally liable for showing speeding on the street, plus it's against Drive policy.
Because the name of the show isn't "Cars with the most possible horsepower." It's "Tuned." If we only tested a version of a car with the most possible horsepower imagineable, where would we go from there?
so does Heffner. But only like 1/10 of the customers go for that, and this is their most popular package. Besides, Heffner put twin turbo's on a Lambo three years before Underground did, and that's the story, not who makes the most power.
The perfect man for the job driving this car! I love Lambo's but I think all that horsepower would be wasted on me. Thanks for another great video Matt. :)
Props to anyone who ventures into the pricey game of Lamborghinis but UGR in Charlotte definitely perfected the TT Lambo game. KC and his guys do great work and they're cool as hell. They beat the crap out of those cars over and over and over again and they haven't had any major problems that I've seen/heard of. Nothing like cruising down the interstate in Charlotte and seeing a black Lambo fly by at like 190 haha
the clutch was slipping a little bit, the car has 20,000 (mostly track) miles on it and needed a new clutch, but he let me beat the shit out of this one first.
Matt i'm loving this show and have been following your videos for the past 3 years. the content you have been putting out in the past few months have been television quality. I would love to see a video involving a 4g63 (Evo or DSM) or a Subaru platform. The aftermarket for them is immense and would certainly draw the views
No matter who you are, you should always give props to people who innovate something bold and new for other companies to build off of; Heffner was the first for TT-Lamborghinis. For the ones who don’t seem to acknowledge that before starting a bench race and arguing about cars they have never seen, driven, or owned…you’re only a PS3 warrior and miss the point. Even UGR acknowledges Heffner and continues to show respect while in direct competition.
when these came out they were "ehh" because the Mercy was soo sick and this wasn't really a poster car. ppl who could afford it would obviously get it, it was affordable to upper class ppl that weren't exactly Mark Cuban and that was cool but nobody really dreamed about owning them. Now you have the successors out there to both mercy and gallardo (huracan and aventador included) and lambo had made some awesome variants of all 4 of these car but to me i think when you look at a lambo to take and modify the Gallardo is hands down my favorite and it took until now for its design to really look sick, i think it was ahead of its time in a lot of ways. The gallardo isn't my favorite as stock but it is awesome nonetheless modded or not but it makes a sick tuner. idk how you explain to such a flamboyant, over the top company such as Lamborghini that in some ways less but it truly is. that modern ish wedge shape looks super aggressive to me, doesn't have as much crap going on and it looks furious to me. i think its kind of funny how in a way this car is "coming back" they look so good, simple and so much going on at the same time.
It's an example for a comparison. Not everything has to be taken literally. I've driven 1,500 HP Supras before, and you know what? They are terrible. As you'll see next week, the 700 HP range is about ideal for one of those cars unless you're building a dedicated drag/mile car or some silly dyno car.
i'll agree with that, Finding a High Horspepower 4cyl that can compete with the array of vehicles in your videos and still be daily driven and reliable must be nearly impossible. I just hope to see a Buschur or Ams vehicle shown someday
We'd love to do that, you just have to convince JF to give us more money for a track, and even more money to dedicating a full extra day to shooting that stuff.
In general changing gaskett thickness is only used for incremental changes. I have heard of using a spacer and a gaskett either side, however that's dodgy. Usually people turbocharging an originally na motor will run low compression forged or billet pistons. I believe the low compression pistons are usually made by making the top face of the piston concave.
Great video & I've always appreciated the work Heffner puts out. Top notch stuff. I'm really interested in that Ultima GTR! Also 20K miles on that setup is very good IMO. I would chalk the clutch replacement as routine maintenance. After all it IS a TT Lambo with 900HP. Throw another Tilton carbon clutch in there and continue to enjoy.
We have done many track tests on The Smoking Tire, on my old TV Show The Car Show, and I've even done a couple on last season of Tuned. Furthermore, this car has a bone stock suspension, and only upgraded horsepower. Therefore it handles...exactly like a bone stock Gallardo, which has been covered many times in the 9 years that car has been out. Additionally, South Florida has virtually no corners, only straight roads between farms, and we can't afford race tracks. Our season finale is on track
They are great glasses, I bought a pair over a year ago after seeing Matt in a video. Pricey but high quality with polarized lenses. About $250 from Dillon Optics.
well if you talk about reliability, nothing beats a stock car, but i agree a tuned car with respectable power boost while remaining within it's capacity to accommodate this additional power and not blowing it apart like we've seen an AMS alphas, omegas etc, is the way to go.
Can't get enough of the sound of those turbo's. LOVE IT!
sounds like the clutch slips after gear changes.
E-Gear sucks hard
it is part of it is they program the transmission that way plus this car was in for a clutch change as its a factory clutch
Martin Allen Why do you say that? Do you even know what E-Gear is?
Martin Allen You're an idiot
+Zac Youngson e-gear is terrible, at least the first generations were (in early Murcielago and Gallardo). That's why a bunch of 1000-2000hp Gallardo's have manual trannies, just as strong as the e-gear but doesn't burn clutch.
They used to sell a dealer option of a twin turbo kit for the Diablo, platinum motors offered it. It was called the Diablo VTTT 750bhp.
I love how at 3:18 Matt lets the twin-turbo get in a few words. Phenomenal video. At first I thought the music was too loud but then the twin-turbo shut me the hell up.
so this is the humble guy i need to see, if i win the lottery :-)
+mightyfinejonboy no underground racing tt gallardo is faster and up to 2150hp
+TheFrenchMC UGR Lambos like to grenade though.
Lol the LOTTERY? Go get it dude

I went to heffners shop a month ago and saw this exact car on the lift.. talked to Jason about what I need to do for my future in autos.. he's a great dude
I want so bad...damn that's an amazing car.
JD!!!
i believe he's referring to the new Europe-only RS6 Avant, which comes with a twin-turbo version of the 5.2L V10 making (I think) 575 HP.
sounds like the clutch is slipping?
Yeah, i was thinking the same thing.
kmlilleng
Jimmy Metcalf when you have that much boosted WHP the header is gonna belavate in reference to the cam shafts, causing the clutch to occilate left and right while mid shift, once the psi ejects from the valve, you will have some slipping but it's counteracted by the fuel ECU and the ignition systems. the XULF capasitor will compensate for the fact I am making all of this up, I don't know shit about cars. I love everything about this video, the build up, framing, and subject. Lovely!
Just for $100000 and $40000... that's it!

@@Pussymoneyweedgod Only 80k a year, Dave Ramsey would say no way you could actually afford that 100k car with 40k worth of upgrades.
i was at a caffeine and exotic event in atlanta and one guy had his 1500hp gallardo from heffner. absolultey beast!
So, is he really trying to say the Gallardo is a nice car to beef up because it costs "just" 100k?

Martin Allen I have no clue what you're trying to say, mate.
well, 7 years later, supras cost way more than gallardos lmfao
Heffner also makes a 1500 WHP Gallardo, it was the gray car in the shop shots. People like to conveniently forget that.
I only thought Heffner made Playboy magazines..I never thought he tuned cars too. Wtf is up with that?
The cars are the porn
No, we are not comparing cars based on cost and horsepower. We've said this a million times. Underground wasn't interested in working with us, and Heffner, being the first one to TT a modern lambo, is the better story.

Lamborghini is owned by Audi which is German hence German engineering
pretty much haha Volkswagen owns nearly everyone, a testament to how good they are I guess nine8nine1

yep exactly Dane Wilbanks
also Bugatti is apart of the VW family name too

No, I said Heffner was the first person to install a Twin Turbo kit on a Gallardo. Not THIS Gallardo.
Heffner designed and installed the twin turbo kit on a Lamborghini Gallardo in 2004 dude.
and by the way, it really pisses me off when we go all the way across the country, spend our time and our money making these films, with 7 years of car reviewing experience behind it, only to hear a commenter say they want to see Chris Harris drive it.

yes, and Heffner did it in 2003.
Yes, the supra shots were from Titan Motorsports, that's next week's episode.
This episode was great Matt. Idk why but it felt more more special than some other ones. Awesome intro too!
Heffner is the shit! Not just because they're in my city but they build some badass reliable cars!
because I've written it ten different times in the comments section of this video and every other video we've made.
I've also seen many stock Gallardo's that have beroken down. Unless the engines have broken down directly due to too much boost (basically grenaded?), it may have nothing to do with the modifications. Those E.Gear systems blow hydraulic lines all the time.
the suepension is stock, and then engine allows you to go way faster than normally acceptable. it's good in the corners, but its highlight is straight line speed.
we haven't found one worth filming yet, and all the really fast ones I see just break all the time. Reliability above all.
this car is tracked on road courses almost every weekend, and the clutch is starting to slip a bit on hard pulls at about 20,000 miles. Heffner replaced it after we kicked the shit out of it for a day.
Mr. Heffner is a genius, he understands that you don't always need 12-1300whp he understands reliability is key, and theres no point in making power if you can't enjoy it.

If your implying ugr, it wrong cuz there stage 1 TT kits make 1200-1400whp. Their systems never blow up.
The Heffner kit for the R8 is nearly identical to the Gallardo kit, they offer both.
absolutely not, unless either a) I'm driving well below the speed limit, which would defeat the purpose of what you're asking for or b) I'm on a race track. I could be held criminally liable for showing speeding on the street, plus it's against Drive policy.
This thing is badass. A TT Gallardo is definitely one of my dream cars. One day man, one day.
Because the name of the show isn't "Cars with the most possible horsepower." It's "Tuned." If we only tested a version of a car with the most possible horsepower imagineable, where would we go from there?
That lambo sounds so awesome. Add a turbo or two to any application and its a beautiful thing.
Novitec Rosso makes a twin-supercharged Ferrari F430 kit. It makes 616 hp and 396 lb/ft of torque.
so does Heffner. But only like 1/10 of the customers go for that, and this is their most popular package. Besides, Heffner put twin turbo's on a Lambo three years before Underground did, and that's the story, not who makes the most power.
DAMN! you guys are doing a really good job! keep up the good work this is better then TV!!
The perfect man for the job driving this car! I love Lambo's but I think all that horsepower would be wasted on me. Thanks for another great video Matt. :)

My goodness what a sensational car, but for some reason im still in love with the VF Lambo, even though the turbo noise in this car is amazing.
In Chris's defense, I'd rather the FR-S than the 370Z as well. The 370Z is a dog on the track, and I overheated one after just 3 laps.
I love that Matt keeps interrupting his own monologue with smiling.
Thats a awesome Lambo, Great episode Matt

I agree, there is clutch slip after gearchange. Maybe its mapped/setup that way to save the transmisson?
you are so lucky, that is one awesome car!
nice vid btw.
It's not a twin clutch. Lamborghini uses a single clutch for the E.Gear system.
waiit till next week, when the worlds predominant Supra tuners say that the movie catapulted their business

We'd love to do that, you just have to convince JF to give us more money for a track, and even more money to dedicating a full extra day to shooting that stuff.
that turbo whistle is great !!!!!
Yep; the beauty of modern Lambos is getting parts from the local Audi dealer. Believe me, a LIFESAVER for any owner.
the turbos spooling up is such an amazing sound! i want my saturn to make that sound when i start moving lol
next week is the Titan Supra.
I"m a mechanical engineer just starting my first job and my dream car is a LP-560. Give me 5 years and I'll be stopping by
Epic video dude
At he must have been going almost 80 mph!
Whoa
800, 900, a thousand.
