- Tuned goes to Sealy, TX to test Hennessey's take on the already potent Camaro ZL1, one of the loudest cars we've ever had the privilege of driving. We discuss what it's like to drive a paddle-shifted muscle car and race Hennessey's daily driver CTS-V "Hammer Wagon" down their private drag strip.
The camaro just looks so much angrier than a dodge or mustang. And the sound🤘🏻

The thing that he missed is, in the 70's you could buy a muscle car working a part time job out of high school, nowadays your hardest working blue collar worker would dream of owning a car like anything featured here.
Ryder5172 And the thing that you miss, is that even today cars in the us are 3 times cheaper than in europe. Over here we pay about 150k dollars for a zl1 or corvette. Even if cars are more expensive nowadays, you still have to realise that cars and gas are still probably the cheapest in the us
I realize prices in Europe are inflated compared to the US market, but I was referring to the fact that this video almost made it seem like the average american could afford to own a car like this. Which is very far from the truth nowadays, versus 35+ years ago, and it's all in regards to plain and simple inflation

You couldn't buy a REAL "muscle car" back in those days unless you had some tenure at your job and recieved a few promotions. i don't get how so many people forget that back in those days minimum wage was like 3 bucks an hour in cali. Try buying a 6000 dollar car when you're making 200 bucks a week working full time.
listen, in 1979, working an assembly line job, right out of high school I ordered a camaro Z28 from the factory with money to spare, here in CT making $6 an hr at the time

The 628 HP Dinan M6 is a stroker kit. I'm not sure you can run the stroker kit in conjunction with the supercharger, but if you can, it's probably closer to 800 HP. However, even a base BMW M6 is over $100,000. The stroker kit (installed) is another $30,000, and the supercharger package from Dinan is $20,000. All that together is more than double the price of the 700 HP CTS-V from Hennessey.
700HP from a LSA 6.2L is super easy to make.
LS9 cam, under drive pulley,Tune, and a bigger intake is all that's needed.
You could get that done for less than $3000.
Yeah thats what I waa thinking but hey if youre rich and dont work on your own stuff I guess they like having the name on the car and warranties and crap some people like handing it over and saying make it fast but personally I'd rather do it myself or at leaat pick out all the parts

dude when the zl1 won that 1st round i was like oh SH1T!!!!!! the cts had more power but somehow the zl1 pulled it off. but when the 3 dudes jumped up in the cts v i was really laughing! cmon this is SO cool! anyway we look at it chevy/GM rocks! now if only they can make a stock zl1 with 700 to shut up the hellcat and gt500. go GM! they should make a deal with hennesy and make some 700 andd 850hp limited edition versions just for the hardcore enthusiasts like me and many other drag racers out in the crowd.
7:19 on the ring for the ZR-1, 7:41 for the ZL1, 7:59 for the CTS-V... and Europeans call us ignorant....

I was replying to the point of the M3 being less tune-able than the ZL-1. Both cars have nearly identical base prices, but to get to the 700 HP level, you're going to spend a lot more money with the M3. That's a valid point when the difference is the price of a whole other car.
If you watch this with surround sound headphones at a high volume, you will most definitely need to change your pants at around 3:26. Good god that car sounds amazing!

Screw HP. Torque matters.
Isn't torque a result of HP? I mean all torque is is 2 forces acting in opposite directions.

HP is just torque multiplied by your RPM, all divided by 5252. So... they both matter?
LSA comes 556 with torque stock, so with these mods I'm sure its around 700.
i saw a guy with a hell cat that told me torque has nothing to do with how fast a vehicle can go. i looked at. the guy with a blank face and said "are you serious " he knodded his head said serious. i said well alright then buddy and walked off on him

Many tuner companies have $2,000 650Hp packages.
The camaro's LSA 6.2L is de-tuned because the corvette has to be the fastest.
A cam, intake, pulley, ECU flash is all that's needed.
cam swaps are super ez with LS v8s.

The ZR1 and Z06 have to be faster than the Camaro because they are more expensive.

yes, but on a dollar-for-dollar ratio, the ZL1 is a much better value for similar performance. The total cost of the ZL1 with HPE package is around $75,000 out the door. The VF engineering M3 was, as tested, nearly $120,000.
I wonder why GM never supercharged their 427 instead of switching to supercharging the 376
one of the reason being is the cylinder walls on the 427 are way to thin to handle the boost of a blower, also high compression kills it to, 427 though harder to boost picks up stupid power with just boltons and a cam
MichaelH210 what are you saying. High compression is a must for that big of displacement.
you usually want a lower compression for the ls7, otherwise you'll run into problems. most don't run a higher then 6-8lbs of boost without building the engine. then after that, well go all out. at least this is what I've been hearing and seeing in person
Your right I got confused but on a N/A setup higher compression fills up cylinders better.
On boost you really don't want any higher than 9:1

you missed the joke, Hennessey was referring to the extra weight over the back tires as "traction control" which helped him get a better launch and beat me.

Calling someone fat is literally the laziest way to insult someone, and reeks of lack of creativity.
Just because cost is taken into consideration doesn't mean we won't do expensive cars. A tuned Lamborghini is expensive, but when you compare it to other cars with similar performance (I.E. Pagani Zonda, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari Enzo, etc), it's a very good value for money.
And as the host and PRODUCER of the show, yes, I make the show.
Doesn't really matter if your car has 700 horsepower when it weighs over 2 tons.

Amazing......old time muscle is great but the new tech with the new horsepower has brought the new era muscle cars to an unbelievable level. To all the new car specialty manufactures "I say thank you!"
Mr Hennessey seems like a really decent person and his passion makes him someone to admire. That camaros sound gives me shivers and looks sublime WOW!
Matt Farah and Chris Harris have the BEST job on the planet. Color me jealous. Great production value on the Drive videos and my only gripe is that they are on TH-cam, which compels me to watch them during work.
We've said this many times: traveling is expensive, and if we get on a plane, we have to make at least 4 episodes to make the flight financially work out. Hennessey tunes a wide variety of cars and gave us full access to his demo fleet. So when we went there, we took advantage of the situation and drove a few different cars. That's all.
Great video, the smile on John's face says it all...it's fun. And he's right, some of these foreign car companies don't leave alot of reliable horsepower on the table. If you stress these smaller motors too much it's a go then blow situation. I don't have time for that rebuild it every weekend crap...

Yup, would love to help anytime. I own a 2ss, myself. I know the Z/28 is way more than the SS. I would recommend that you use it stock initially as it is a LOT of power to begin with. When you start to get used to it, upgrade it. My previous car was 250HP and going to 426HP was a really big deal. Controlling the car and stuff is not as easy as i thought it would be. Especially when having traction control off. Good luck with the Camaro. It's an amazing car.
both car are super clean. thats the first station wagon i seen thats worth getting cant beat the style and power of a wagon and camaro is extra loud that i also like. i have a 08 trailblazer ss and it would be nice to see a hennessey tbss only cause i havent seen or heard of one yet. wish i had the cash to be the first one to do it in 2013 it was be really nice
Had a 2013 CTSV coupe with Hennessey HP700. Bought it with 5k miles for cheap and sent it in for the package. Best thing I ever did. Sold it to a friend so its still in the fam. Had to get another car.

I love that Hennessey changes the engine parts, instead of just slapping on a massive supercharger and saying oh this is fast, but this is equaly fast and will last
seating for 5, with a usable trunk, you can see out of it, and it looks way better... that CTS-V is badass, i hope one day i'll have one for a daily driver
Thanks Abdul, I'll check out SLP and Lingenfelter too. I plan to get the new 2014 Camaro Z/28 and was considering having it tuned right out of the factory. I reached out to Hennessey first after seeing a promo Jay Leno did with him. I also saw Howard Tanner (Redline) out there, but I didn't reach out to him yet. I'll keep doing research! Camaro + CTS-V = the symphony of raw horsepower and loud exhausts.
I have no idea, I drove it pretty hard so it wasn't very good, but I assume if you keep your foot out of it, you can get as good or better than stock.

The suspension on the Z/28 is even more sophisticated than the one on the ZL-1. I'm a Mopar guy and there is no denying that GM has the most sophisticated suspension systems in the world. Just listen to the guy talk about the new suspension on the Z/28 - F1 technology that not even the Porsche GT3 has!
The sound is amazing.

we didn't measure 0-60, only quarter mile, where it did an 11.2 at 129 on street tires.

@VonenEsp I understand what you're saying but you have to remember, that M5 is bi-turbo. Turbos always have benefit of making big power from smaller displacement. If Hennessey's kit swapped out the blower for twin turbo... this car would be making more power
707hp/717ft.lb torque for $75,000, thats a great deal for that car! That magnetic suspension is the way to go for 2014. Its great to see American cars with big brakes and tuned suspension, the GT500 has a long way to go to get to the ZL1's status!
The Black Hennessy Cam is the same model as Bumblebee from the first three Transformers movies and painted black to look like Knight Rider.

The golden age of muscle cars to an extent was back in the late 60s, because everyone could afford one. The Z/28 here (ontario, canada) with just the option of AC/speaker system is $80,000 before tax, tack on another 13% plus all the bs fee's GM loves to bombard you with and you're easily over $90k. Far cry from the cost of a car back in the 60s era, even with the inflation difference and whatnot. Some nice machines today though, can't deny that.

In Australia we have Ford falcon FG which are the new models they have a 4ltr Turbo Inline 6cly twin overhead cam. The guy that I work with his ute or pick up as you guys call tham makes 420rwkw and does the 1/4 mile in 10.80 stock trim running ET drag radials. $38,000 not bad for half the engine size and price.

God, that is a beautiful Camaro. I got a 97 Camaro which I upgraded to 300hp. Nothing fancy but she is my baby. If I had 700 hp I'd be in jail :)

You can buy one from Hennessey (the 700hp one) for $120,000. They have a shop in Texas and one in California. Or, if the 750hp Lingenfelter Camaro sounds better (plus, a good reputable shop- lookup "hennescrewed"), that is only a $35k, or 38k for 775 hp upgrade. So about half the price for more power from a better company with 3x the warranty.

I couldnt agree more about GM LS-based engines. My father has a LT1 Impala with over 183K miles that he uses as an everyday work car and its extremely reliable. The only thing that he had to replace on it was a fuel pump. Other than that he drives it constantly.
