Found in a Field: 1958 Dodge Mayfair Hardtop!

  • Hi!
Cold War Motors just dragged this sweet 1958 Dodge home from out in the country where it had been lying abandoned for many years. It is a very rare piece, with only about 3000 ever made, including all body styles. These Canadian "Plodges" used Plymouth bodies and interiors with Dodge front ends and were manufactured in Canada through 1959. The Mayfair is the top-of-the-line model, and is the equivalent to the Plymouth Belvedere. This one has a 313 Poly-head V8 and power steering. Cold War Motors is going to restore this car as soon as a couple of other projects are finished.

I wouldn't consider fixing that. Way too many hard to find parts missing and it's not like there's a plethora of salvage yards with these sitting around. Would be a really cool car though.

Whew! Good thing a real auto restoration expert came along and saved me a bunch of trouble! I mean, you do restore cars full time for a living, right? Because if you don't, you're sure gonna look dumb when everyone reads this.
      Cheers.

Your snowmobile reminds me of the two ancient machines my Cheapskate dad bought for us back in about 1978 or 79. They were rental snowmobiles that a local golf course rent it out during the winter, and when they were just too old for the golf course to justify being able to rent them anymore, along comes my dad. He was a Scotsman, through and through, and I guarantee he didn't spend much money on them. They were Skiroule's, and all I know is that they were Canadian. I've never done any research on them, in fact don't even know what happened to them. but I can remember us having to put new pistons in them every winter

I rememebr pops buying the '57 Custom Suburban Ply wagon as a kid. Pops was a designer at Sears in Chicago so he had the thing custom painted from the factory with two tone - the white/off shite body with lavender roof and lavender trim on the side. Ever since (I'm 62) it's Mopar or no car. I was always fascinated with the Canadian morphs of Dodge fronts with Plymouth bodies. 2nd car I bought was brand new '74 'Cuda 360 at age 21 after my 1st car - a 3 year old '68 Coronet 500 - more rare than the 'Cuda today.

We thought and still think that we alone are going to save planet earth, so all the nice old cars got recycled down here and have been gone for 30+ years. Maybe you're right, in my country (spain) many years ago the little people who bought american cars (from the 50's or 60's) changed the big petrol engines to smaller diesel "universal" ones, like Perkins or Barreiros with another gearbox too, the buttons where left in the dash without any use and the new gearbox used a stick which was located in the floor of the car, usually of 5 speed gearbox because those weren't at all powerful engines (40-60hp) and needed all this gears to be able to move.

I haven't done much with it yet, but I am gathering all of the parts it will need to be put back together. The '58 Mayfair coupes are apparently quite rare, maybe less than 10 left?
