  • Saturday Night Palsy (Wrist Drop) Causes, Symptoms, Treatment of Radial Nerve Palsy
How long can Saturday night palsy last?
Saturday night palsy refers to neuropraxia of the radial nerve following prolonged compression against the spiral groove of the humerus. The pattern of weakness is unique with wrist, thumb, and finger drop, and recovery is universal by six months.
Is Saturday night palsy and wrist drop same?
Saturday night palsy, a radial nerve compression injury, commonly results from placing one's arm over the backrest of a chair. The pattern of clinical involvement is dependent on the mechanism, severity, and the level of injury. The most commonly reported symptom is loss of wrist extension (“wrist drop”).
What muscles are affected in Saturday night palsy?
It is most commonly affected in the upper arm where it winds round the humerus and in the extensor muscle compartment of the forearm affecting the posterior interosseous branch. Finger and wrist drop are common, their severity depending upon the site of the lesion.
Can Saturday night palsy be cured?
In most cases, people will fully recover from Saturday Night Palsy, but that full recovery can take weeks, sometimes up to months. If you've woken up from a night out and are feeling the tingling symptoms in your arm, it's best to seek treatment right away.
How do you get Saturday night palsy?
Abstract. THE TERM Saturday night palsy has become synonymous with radial nerve compression in the arm resulting from direct pressure against a firm object. It typically follows deep sleep on the arm, often after alcohol intoxication.
How do you treat Saturday night palsy?
    Treatment and Recovery
Your physician may recommend prescription or over-the-counter medication to decrease pain associated with radial nerve palsy. Your physician or physical therapist may prescribe exercises to strengthen your muscles and increase your range of motion.
    Are wrist drops permanent?
Wrist drop caused by radial nerve palsy can be cured in the majority of cases. About 70% of radial nerve palsy cases are cured with conservative treatment. Depending on the amount of damage to the radial nerve, it can take weeks to months for a nerve to heal after treatment.
    Can wrist drop heal itself?
The prognosis after developing wrist drop depends on the degree and severity of radial nerve injury. Even in most cases of mild injury, recovery still takes at least 2 to 4 months. In cases where recovery fails, tendon transfer surgery may improve function.
Which nerve is affected in Saturday night palsy?
Saturday night palsy refers to a compressive neuropathy of the radial nerve that occurs from prolonged, direct pressure onto the upper medial arm or axilla by an object or surface. The radial nerve is composed of the C5 to T1 nerve roots, which arise from the posterior segment of the brachial nerve plexus.
How long can radial nerve palsy last?
Radial nerve palsy can continue for up to 21 months following injury, with 6 months being the average time to full recovery. This time can be frustrating for clients waiting for signs of recovery.
