Remember that day,I think Sunderland brought 13k, definitely the biggest away support that ever came to Cardiff,in a time when all you had to do was get to the ground to get in ,those were the days before the Sky money destroyed the game
I was there. Never seen away support like it! Had to delay kick off to let the Sunderland fans in. Fair play, really impressive support. Official attendance was over 19,000. When they announced it, people laughed because there were more than that there. Ninian Park capacity was over 40,000 at the time, no way ground was less than half full.
I remember this game like it was yesterday, followed Sunderland home and away every game, 16 years old and we took over ninian park, incredible day and atmosphere and we needed one point for promotion and can still picture in my mind Bryan "pop" Robson goal and that header from Barry"the pipe fitter"dunn. What a day and great times good and not so good. Sunderland till I die
Had we won this game, we'd have gone up, but as we only managed to draw, it perhaps brought back memories of the rather fateful 1-2 home defeat v Cardiff the previous season, which it could be argued, cost us promotion. However this time round, no such disappointment, as a 2-0 win v West Ham in a game in hand we had at Roker, saw us up as Div. 2 runners-up. 19,340 (including a large following from Wearside) were present at Ninian Park, easily Cardiff's best home gate of the 1979-80 season, while nearly 50,000 were at Roker for the West Ham game. Great times to be a Sunderland fan ....
@@daviddonnelly7182 One point would have sufficed, had Chelsea drawn or lost their final game, at home v Oldham on the same day. As it happened, Chelsea’s 3-0 win put them into third place, a point ahead of ourselves, who dropped to fourth. Which mean we needed at least a point in our final fixture, at home v West Ham, to pip Chelsea for promotion, on goal difference. And of course we won 2-0, which guaranteed us not only promotion, but also runners-up spot. Though had we won at Cardiff, we’d have still pipped Chelsea, on goal difference. And had we still beaten West Ham, we’d have actually finished as Champions, on goal difference from Leicester.
@@daviddonnelly7182 I'm sorry if my original post misled you a bit! What I meant was, that our draw at Cardiff didn't mean we'd missed out on promotion completely, but that we needed at least another point, in our very last game v West Ham at Roker, in order to go up/pip Chelsea. But our defeat v Cardiff in the last home game of the previous/78-79 season it could be argued, cost us promotion. For in spite of our 2-1 win at Wrexham in our final game, which I recall put us back in the top three, Crystal Palace won a game they had in hand, which meant they pipped us. But even if we'd lost at Ninian Park in the final away game of the 79-80 season, a win v West Ham in the last game/home game, would have seen us up on goal difference, over Chelsea. Thankfully, we went up with a little bit more to spare!
@@daviddonnelly7182 And yes, it was a great game/day, while the gate of just over 19,000, was I believe, Cardiff's best home league gate of the 79-80 season. Boosted of course, by a large travelling contingent from Wearside. I just wish I could have been there, as it happened, I had to make to do with following the game via Metro Radio. Guess that shows how long ago it was!
I was there. Sunderland were chasing promotion and brought a massive support. There was so many of them trying to get into the ground that the kick off was delayed
Plenty of coaches going to from Ninian Park that day going to see that game, and plenty of coaches going to and from Fellows Park as Newport County supporters went to Walsall to watch them clinch promotion. From what I was told by Newport County who went to Walsall they passed many Sunderland supporter coaches there and back.
Im there in that big away end, after a huge struggle to get in. I ended up getting a thump off of this big poluce Inspector on the back of the head. Turned round ready to give some back and ill i see is tge lettuce leaves etc in the hat. He says F off to the back of the line boyo, so i did.

Biggest ever following at Cardiff! Respect to Sunderland - not many better
