  • Fresh off the assembly line the Minelab Equinox 700 and 900 are finally getting in the hands of YOU, their customers. But for those of you still sitting on the sidelines wanting to know if Minelab addressed the coil ears breaking issue, this video will help you come to a conclusion and maybe get you off the sidelines. I'll show you up close the issues of the 800 coil ears and how Minelab has attempted to resolve the issue with the 700 and 900.

    I know that this video was a year ago but I can tell you that I just got the 900 did everything that the manual said to do to set it up and I charged it when it was done I picked up the detector and the coil broke off they did replace the coil and the first time I used the new coil i noticed that it has a crack in one of the ears so now I have to see if they are going to replace this coil too

    They have modified the new version of the 11- inch, but the 6 & 15 look to be the same as previous version.
    I have used a light coating of silicone paste as a lubricant between the 'washers & ears' to allow better movement and hopefully reducing wear on the washers.
    And I don't tighten the screw anymore than is necessary. I prefer my coils to have some movement,
    which might help reduce stress?

    with knowing how bad the coil ears were before. You can guarantee that Minelab has fixed the issue on the new coil. I know the jury is still out on a lot of field testing, but I have a feeling Minelab is not that stupid to allow the problem to continue on the new release

    They used the Vanquish set-up. A lot of technology used on the Vanquish 540 is used on the 900 and Manicore also. The EMI technology for a example. The Vanquish 540 is one of the quietest machines I have ever used. That's the sensitive at 9!!!

    We bought new Explorer XS's years ago. They broke the coil ears and the upper shaft housing multiple times. Each time they were sent in for warranty repair. Before 6 months; Minelab informed both of us that they'd no longer honor the warranty. What a crappy company .

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea, I doubt you will have enough room so you might as well print a new bolt to go with it. I would wait and see how things are going. I suspect most of the issues have been resolved and stiffeners won't be needed.

    The solution is to fix washers to the inside of the ears when the shaft rubbers wear down. This stops over tightening the bolts and snapping the ears. Also dont use the detector to lean on when bending down to pick up finds.

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  ปีที่แล้ว

      The rubbers supplied were very think and it took me awhile to work the shaft in place to thread the bolt.

    • @markkus1134
      @markkus1134 ปีที่แล้ว

      Problem is the washers wear down and then it’s hard plastic on plastic then you see the wear occurring I epoxied a stiffener over the ears because eventually they will
      Wear then snap!

  • @richprascher2843
    @richprascher2843 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like the design of the new ears would be a challenge to build a coil stiffener that would support them.

      15" is going to give you about an inch more depth and of course you get the extra coverage. Using the 6" at the beach is not going to give you a lot of coverage but it is lighter.

  • @DIG_5050

    From you video, it looks like the coil bolt threads into the left coil ear. I’m not a fan of that. Should the coil bolt break, it will be difficult remove the lower shaft from the coil ears to replace the bolt. Another comment stated to address the coil washer material. I agree.

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I don't understand how it would be difficult to remove a bolt if it breaks. The new washers that came with the coil were very thick so maybe that addresses your concerns

    • @DIG_5050
      @DIG_5050 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MentalMetal Hey Scott. Assume the thumb screw end breaks off. How do you get the threaded portion removed from the coil ear-you cannot remove the lower shaft to grip the remaining bolt to remove it. If the bolt breaks off inside the lower shaft, how do you get the lower shaft off to turn the bolt out of the coil ear. Last, if just the threaded tip breaks off the rest of the bolt, it’s stuck in the coil ear-I guess you could remove it with a pair of pliers or vise grips. That’s all.

    • @MentalMetal
      @MentalMetal  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see what you are saying. I guess I would use a drill bit and drill out the threaded end and vice grips like you mentioned on the other end. Lets give it a fair chance before we start ripping on a solution that to me, from what I see, is a very good fix to what they had before. Even if the bolt breaks we aren't replacing coil the coil.
