I visit the various clearance sections in Hobby Lobby stores where items are marked down to around a dollar. All kinds of things from different departments that can be repurposed.
Just recently they had some doll house accessories that could be repurposed. Ive found inks, pigments, powders, glitters, textures from the paint dept. Wire, beads, jewels, string from the jewelry dept. Brushes, oils, acrylics, pens, pencils, charcoals from the art dept. Fabrics/sewing had all shapes and sizes of scissors, self healing mats, measuring tools. Most items under $2 many under $1.
A recommendation for replacing your supplies when you run out - apparently the formulation of Tamiya airbrush cleaner is virtually identical to that of their extra thin cement, and it's considerably cheaper by volume, so you can buy a bottle of the airbrush cleaner and refill your cement bottle several times for less money.

Really? So it cements plastic? That’s great to know. Thank you
Great tool review, can't wait to watch advanced tools video. Always a pleasure to watch a master talk about the craft he enjoys 👍
Thanks 👍 Though I'm not sure about the "master" accolade! :-D
Thank you for the recommendation on vision aids. Twenty years ago, I could see extremely well without glasses and used one of those magnifier lights only when doing some really fine detail, usually involving photo-etch. Now in my sixties, I can’t see anything at arm’s reach or closer without glasses, and even then my detail vision is dubious. Building an entire model using my magnifier light is just problematic. I just received my Vision Aid magnifier, same as yours and which I got on your recommendation. On first blush, my trust in you seems to be well placed. Just playing around with it, the device is light weight and comfortable, so I think wearing for extended periods will not be any kind of a problem. With all the different lens along with the adjustability of the lens and light positions, it think this thing will be a game changer. Thanks again.
You're welcome! I use mine every day and I've not regretted the purchase one bit!
I have the exact same magnifier headset. Was cheap but it’s awesome for my almost 50 yr old eyes.
Where is the clamp from? I heard you say burner or something? I couldn’t find anything like it googling.
berna multi clamp
For palettes I've always used single ceramic tiles. I work with acrylics exclusively and the glazed surface of the tile means paint doesn't stick and will come off under a water rinse and at most a rub with the hands. They're usually less than $1 USD at hardware stores.
Hey, love lists like this. Glad you've made it. I noticed that the sound was only coming through the left channel in my headphones. Not a huge deal. Still enjoyed the video.
Enjoyed that, thanks

Great videos ! There is one tool that Is quite valuable to me , its a diamond stick used to sharpen wood chisels
its about 1 inch wide by 2 inches long , different grit on each side , was pricey , I use it to sharpen xacto blades , drill bits
scrbes ect , where it really pays off is with photo etch , I can dress down the nibs with zero pull or drag on the photo etch
even down to 350 scale ships railing , they are very sharp
, a soak in acetone to clean , and you would be amazed at all the metal that falls out of them ,
Thanks! That sounds an interesting tool, I'll have to do a little investigating....
@@MannsModelMoments I'm a solitary model builder with no social presence , many of the techniques

Thank You!
¡Excelente video! Tuve el mismo viaje y mi exoeriencia fue muy semejante a la tuya. Por cierto la gente de Kaliningrado me pareció muy amable y siempre dispuesta a ayudarte.
What’s a good razor saw brand? Can you just buy the small rectangular blades with small edge holder down one side? The ones that are about 3 inches wide?
Use large paper clips for clamps. Unbend them, then re-form them to apply force where you need it. Lightly sharpen the ends and they will catch and hold, but don't overdo this or you will leave marks on your models.
So how did you discover a floor cleaner works well for model decals
@@danman1012 It was originally a product called Krystal Klear, and I don't know who originally discovered it's modelling uses, but I learned from other modellers back in the 1990s
I've had to switch all notifications off for TH-cam in my notifications bar on my phone there's that many coming through Daily nightly through the night can't take it no more lol so it's definitely working for me in Scotland! What they have changed it you can't see who far you are into a video now or the seek bar it's all covered by the black comments page or the video info! I'm away to complain on their app store about it all now I'll add that in about the notifications for you!
Thanks!
Hi Alex.. re paint colours. If your main interest is a single genre, like RAF WWII, would you suggest one of the paint sets collecting the most common colours for that genre together?
Absolutely - I've done this with sets from both AK Interactive and Vallejo, and not regretted it.
My biggest gripe in 2023 and coming back to modelling after 34 years is about Tamiya paints.
When I made my last models i bought my Tamiya paints in the large 23ml jars. It now appears that if you want Tamiya in the UK only 10ml jars are available. Yet if you go to Super-Hobby based in Poland they have the large 23ml jars.
Is it a case of profiteering on the part of the UK agent?
Either way it looks like my paint is being ordered from Poland. I just hope HMRC don't slap duty on it.
PVA or Elmer's glue works well on paper, wood, and styrofoam, so I was always curious on how strong of a bond it would provide on non porous surfaces such as styrene plastic.
It's not really a load-bearing bond, but certainly enough to hold smaller items like canopies in place.
My son got a Chinese made double action airbrush off Amazon with a small battery powered compressor that's about 6 inches long and 2 inches square. I expected it to have a pulse or pressure drop off problem. Surprisingly, it doesn't. No, it's not as good as my Paasche Vision, or for large surfaces, my old VL-1 that I use for large area coverage , and you can't adjust the pressure, but it does make a good (not great), affordable beginner's airbrush. Pressure worked well with properly thinned paints and the double action paint flow was predictable to him. I was rather surprised by it.
Hello great video… question I like your wood storage set up pic at the beginning of your video did you make that and piece it together or did you buy it complete like that… I have something similar that I bought at Harbor Freight ( wood chest with drawers) here in Texas but I like yours because it’s more organized and well spaced.. thx
This is actually a set of products from a Polish company called Hobbyzone - they do a whole range of different things, from paint holders to spray booths.
The extra thin glue is exactly the same product as the pink top airbrush cleaner but is a lot cheaper to buy.
It's Acetone & Butyl Acetate - even cheaper to buy the neat chemicals and mix them 50:50 (which is what I've done!). You get 2 litres for about £35 (including postage)... 😀
Subscribed. A bit of advice though. The last two videos I've watched there are several minutes at the end with just a black screen. The video has ended long before it stops playing. Edit out the last several minutes of 'dead air'.
Thanks for the heads-up, wasn't aware of that!
I would like to see your skills as a modeler as I have been modeling for 60 yrs and like to see different approaches to paint, weathering, washes, layering etc. if your content is for beginners or more intermediate I will pass on subscribing.
I will be putting more content with advanced builds etc up in the future, but wanted to get these "baseline" videos out to show people what I know first, and to give an insight into what I'm doing in those videos
@@MannsModelMoments ok I will keep watching but will have to pass on the beginner videos. keep at it there are a lot of modelers out there but I think most are looking to increase there skills and are more advanced. I will subscribe to help you out, good luck!
@@2shoestoo Thanks for the support, I appreciate it and be sure I'll be moving onto more advanced techniques and detail as I go, I just want to ensure I bring as many people along with me as I can when I do 🙂
Personally, I've found I prefer using bottle caps (the kind from glass bottles) for mixing small amounts of paint vs using a pallet, especially if I'm working on something small like a 1/72 pilot.
Good tip, thanks!
Just found your channel and subbed (and selected notifications) I'm looking forward to checking out more of your content. Have a great day. -David
Awesome, thank you!
Top video. Can I ask where you get your Pledge? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks
Fortunately I bought a bottle before it went out of production, but unless you can spot one in secreted on the shelf of an old hardware store, you're out of luck I'm afraid....
@@MannsModelMoments Maybe needed to mention a type of varnish then? I wonder if any other type of polish will do?
@@fhbooker Unfortunately normal varnishes and polishes don't work in the same way - there are a couple of chemicals in Pledge/Klear that give it thee properties, and I've been searching for a substitute for it ever since - testing a possibility atm, sub and you may see a video on it in the future!
Just my opinion, but for an intermediate modeler an airbrush is essential. A very competent one can be had for the price of one or two kits, but get one from a known company with a history and a range of airbrushes. Cheap, one-off airbrushes are not the way to go and will make the modeler question why so many people use them.
These are intermediate level; tools, not for the intermediate modeller (a small distinction!)- as I mentioned, as you're expanding your skills you need to be thinking about an airbrush, but it's certainly not essential at this stage and know several modellers who have never used one. I'll be looking at what you should think about when considering your first airbrush in an upcoming video, but I don't think there is a single answer to the question, and I certainly wouldn't discount ANY airbrush.

@@wirralnomad I'm afraid you've lost me there?
@@MannsModelMoments
I seem to have lost myself with that one lmfao, this comment was intended for another video and I have absolutely no idea how it ended up here!
@wirralnomad interesting! Lol
I've stopped using that Pledge and Klear UV nowadays my model's from like 10 years ago are all flaking and yellowing they just look like they have been badly brush painted whare it's airbrushed and looks so shiny plastic it's not hoding up good atoll! I'm just packing some them old ones with it away and putting my nee builds in there place so take it as you will I'd not recommend klear floor/Pledge now! The UV protection one is actually worse believe it or not!
Might not be the Pledge/Future - I've models from 20 years ago that are fine, and ones that I varnished with other products (Humbrol) that turned very yellow. At the end of the day, many model paints, pigments and finishes are not made to last decades!
