I still love that this is the way they ended the opening match of the Dark Tournament, this was so hardcore. Also love the foreshadow for how the fight ends.
It’s one of the reasons why the Dark Tournament is so beloved. Unlike most tournaments, each round is different from the previous and depending on the rules you never know who may win and who may lose.
Yusuke isn't a martial artist and neither is Chu. They're both raised on the streets brawlers. That's why they both agreed and enjoyed the fight. Kuwabara is also this type of brawler hence why he romanticized it.
No animelon, the whole point of the knife edge death match is like a cage match or a arena on a cliff and the two knifes represents the line edge where if you step outside the line, you die as if you fell off the cliff but the knifes are borderlines where you don't step out while two fighters put their foot behind and survive it in a form of a close range fight to the death all out punching match until one gives out or fall to their death
Thats true, but at the same time, his blood is truly valuable enough to bottle considering what happens later in the series. He is a bit of a rarity lol

Most manly fight in anime. Simple slugfest. No frills, no defense. Just two guys slugging the ever-loving heck out of each other in a test of endurance.
15:08 "I don't know if I like it all that too much" 😂 All us dudes loved this fight when we first reacted to it kinda like Kuwabara saying he could watch for hours
I swear the shot of the feet going into the knives in the episode causes so many reactors to get squeamish. It's a great episode and a great match to start the tournament. The knife edge deathmatch is no frills, just two guys slugging it out until one falls. The description of the knife being the edge of your world is just that. The knives digging into either fighter's foot is kind of like having your back against the wall as there is nowhere to go as you can't put your foot on the other side of the knife. This stipulation was in Yusuke's wheelhouse as it was a brawler's dream stipulation. The tension and build-up leading to the community's decision with the lightning strikes and unruly crowd really added to the atmosphere to the fight. It was just a great episode and great introduction to the tournament. This was also the first time where you saw Yusuke really enjoying what he was doing. Yusuke never liked school and had always struggled to find a purpose prior to being a spirit detective. He was given a purpose by becoming a spirit detective, but usually, he didn't want to go on the cases. You don't really see him enjoy what he's doing until he's fighting Chu, particularly in the knife edge death match. It is like he comes to the realization that this is what he's meant for because he's naturally talented at it. Yusuke has been in danger before, but he was always just thrown in and managed to get lucky. This time, he was prepared. It probably hits different when you get a taste for danger and don't have to rely on luck to win a fight. Hopefully, you'll continue to enjoy the tournament as it gets ready to go into the next round.
One of the most iconic fight scenes in all of anime period! Strategy, range, skill, all of it goes out the window. It’s not about who hits the hardest, it’s about who can take the biggest beating.
The committee said no at first based on their own discretion but then we see someone come talk to Sakeo and he leaves the box he's in with Tugoro. Then the decision is recalled and allowed to go through. Its basically an indicator that the influence of team owners can overwrite the tournament's committee.
Before the knife fight starts Hiei says “now that it’s been reduced to hand to hand it’ll be the one with the strongest head that prevails.” He was completely right, it did come down to their heads
@7:32 So, in the manga, after Keiko and Kuwabara rescue Yusuke's body from the fire burning his house down, they stow Yusuke at the Kuwabara house hold for a bit. This is where Shizuru is originally introduced. She's the one that cuts Keiko's burned hair into the style it is now, but also, she can perfectly see Yusuke's spirit hanging around watching Keiko. Her line here was a nod to that scene, since in the anime, it's never expressly told to Shizuru that Yusuke died once before.
“Why do people keep joining? I thought they were the final boss?” Don’t forget it’s a 5+1 vs 5+1 tournament. Every team will have five fighters and an alternate on their rosters.
Classic tournament the build up is always epic along with the great music and you will see everyone’s character development is about to speed run but in a good way
And now you can know this neat fact about Yu Yu and Hunter X Hunter, the best early fights are episode 32. Try not restarting Yu Yu or Hunter at this episode lol

The fun thing about this episode is reminding people that Yusuke while a very skilled fighter and occasionally just lucky. Is much closer to Toguro style as raw power, some one that is as tough as a tank and hits just as hard. Unlike Heie or Kurama who both rely much less on toughness and more on strategy. The major difference obviously is that Toguro is like an army of tanks and Yusuke is more like 1 tank for now.
I genuinely love the relationship between Kuwabara and Kayko (yes, that is the official dub spelling). She actively treats him as one of her friends, and he does the same. As far as he's concerned, she's a non-combat part of the team
Yea they are dead chu made sure of that…but urameshi is definitely a Taurus ♉️ I know he embodies everything I stand for as a person my anime twin but kuwabara is definitely a cool and stand up character we don’t give him enough credit but he is about to have his time in this tournament soon lets enjoy it together 🎉🎉
I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed it. It was different and I like different, especially when it comes to fighting scenes. This one felt more like a no defense type of fight, you could also say kind of like a boxing match also yes team yusuke won because chu said he was the final guy. Also you don’t know if that’s actually Genkai
Kuwabara couldn't beat a boy with yo-yos and you think that he can stand up to this man in a knife edge death match.... right With urameshi struggling I promise you that kuwabara stands no chance
"No weapon is off limits. That includes swords, axes, small rodents..." This show was around before Pokemon, but only in Japan. I'm curious what the original sub dialogue was here, because it sounds like the dub was poking fun at Pikachu.
No, it was actually a joke to Naoko Takeuchi, the writer of Sailor Moon and one on the clamp team that made Cardcaptor Sakura. The two started dating around this time and the two would take love shots at each other in their works
In Spanish there's a meme about the title. This match was all about how equal are Yusuke and Chu. They need 5 members on the team, that's why Karasu appears.

This might be the most meathead fight in the entire show, but it's entertaining as hell. Lol.
I genuinely wish more anime had fights like that lol
Chu's comment that Yusuke's blood is worth bottling was just a metaphor as a compliment. Nothing deeper to it.
Rough translation: Every part of you is valuable beyond measure, your blood should be bottled, not splashed on the ground
Thats true, but at the same time, his blood is truly valuable enough to bottle considering what happens later in the series. He is a bit of a rarity lol

Like a boxing match, but more bloodsport. Yusuke lives through street brawl all his life, so this is a testament to see if he can handle it

It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's what winning looks like!
In other words, “I bet he’ll get tired of beating my ass before I get tired of getting my ass beat.”
This episode really kinda set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
