Lol I thought the use of gloves was so it wasn’t so abrasive when hands rub against plastic. I played a few rhythm games and the hands move faster when bare skin isn’t rubbing against the surface.

either way for those who havent played any round1 arcades are a great choice if you wanna try the games in america
and if you want to really get into them and arent near them as i am

To everyone who want to enter a japanese arcade, here is a tip from my experience. It is so fking overwhelming. People who usually play there are more than "hey this is fun" level. They are, like, "hardcore serious competitive" level, and you don't want to mess with them. So prepare yourself if you wanna go there and play something.

    • @Fauzan1812
      @Fauzan1812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +55

As long as you're polite and stuff they're still treating the entire arcade as public place. If you're good enough or your username is recognized you might get some greetings from them :p

    • @soba3853
      @soba3853 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

they're intimidating but most of the rhythm game community is super welcoming and are willing to help new players with setting stuff up, giving tips, etc. as long as you're not yelling at them mid-set or doing something stupid it's fine. just go up and play your set and don't worry about playing with high level players around cause honestly they couldn't care less, they're probably on their phone just waiting to get their next set in lol.

Lol, on my first games in a Tekken arcade machine, I button mash and try to look bad so when someone wants to play against me I disrespect them so bad like picking randomly or real shit-tier character and I perfect at least 2 rounds against them. Some dudes were serious enough to drop a shit ton of cash just to get back at me so it wqs pretty entertaining.

Japanese rhythm games are notoriously hard to get into, so this is a list of all the games they mentioned
beatmania IIDX (7 button +1 DJ)
sound voltex (turn the knobs and stuff)
chunithm (time to put on those gloves)
mai mai (the gloves picture shown)
WACCA (big circle of sensors, also co created by hardcore tano*c)
    Nostalgia (the piano one)
    Taiko no Tatsujin (taiko drum)
groove coaster (the one with megalovania)
jubeat (the cube where you tap the squares)
    DDR
    Guitar hero / Rock band
some of these are avaliable in the states (mainly in round 1's but it depends.) and there are many, many more than what i've listed. a lot of them are fun to casually play, or get heavily invested in. Anyway, welcome to rhythm game hell, i hope you enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole.
Edit: comments suggest some other rhythm games, and also some corrections
    Pop'n music (9 buttons?!?!?)
Gitadora (rock band but arcade style)
Dancerush stardom (DDR but more fun)
    Also
Pump it up (5 panel DDR)
    Museca (bemani 5 button game)
Reflec beat (kinda dead bemani game)
Project diva (vocaloid rhythm game series)
That's all the big ones. (I think)

Guitar hero / rock band is an American thing which was inspired by GuitarFreaks/DrumMania, BEMANI series games (DDR, IIDX, SDVX, pop’n, etc) which would then be later turned into what’s now known as GITADORA, which is also spilt into two cabinets (basically a deluxe version of old GFDM with more inputs, larger cabinets, HD etc)

It’s really stressful when people are watching you play in an arcade. At my local arcade in California, they implemented Japanese rhythm games like nostalgia, groove coaster, etc. I got addicted to groove coaster and picked up the game pretty fast so that I could play the hardest difficulty on any song. I swear there were so many people crowding around me that eventually I wasn’t sure whether I looked like an idiot or people were actually impressed.

While Japanese arcades are next level, some of us got a taste of them in the States. Growing up my local arcade (in the 90s) had Japanese cabinets. Then there was Arcade Infinity in Rowland Heights was just Japanese games and now We've even got Round 1 here. While the Round 1 centers here are not as big as the ones I've been to in Japan, we get beer at them here which is a huge plus lol With that said, everytime I visit Japan, I spend A HUGE amount of time in arcades. I love the Gundam VS games, so I go around and hitup different arcades around Japan and see which place I had the most difficulty playing in xD

    • @w1sh86
      @w1sh86 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Jono997 most Japanese fighting games start out as an arcade release, Then get ported over to console later. This was the thought process until recently at least. P4U2, BBCF, GG Xrd, heck UNIB was arcade only till UNIEL. And countless other indie fighting game companies would initially put their games in arcades to gauge interest and then port them over to console or PC. That was how it was for a long time. ArcSys has only recently bumped that trend with BBTag not even coming out on arcades until I think a year after console release and Strive had a joint console/arcade release because of the console betas and arcade location tests. ArcSys and several other companies used the NesicaXLive platform for their games in arcades. I think it is now outdated and they use something different now but I’m unsure of that.

I've only been to the local arcade once.
It has an entry fee of ~$20 (you have to book in advance) and it's completely free to play anything.
I had played maybe two or three sessions of Groove Coaster before a friend I was there with went up to one of the machines with a NESiCA card and I got curious where he got one of those, and he told me they sell them at the front desk. So I went and bought one so I could save all my progress and get a more personalized experience while playing GC.
Entry fee (as stated above): ~$20
IC card (they have both NESiCA and e-amusent): ~$10 per card
Oh, and the arcade also have Jubeat and Sound Voltex, hence why they also sell e-amusent cards.
In terms of other music games, the arcade also has MaiMai Finale, Dancing Stage SuperNova and Gitadora.
The rest of their games are like flippers, some shooters, racing and fighting games.

About the card connection to the machines in the US, the progress is saved across regions as long as they are connected to their respective network, e.g. if you got a score on jubeat in Japan, that score will be loaded on an eamusement (Bemani’s score hosting system)-connected jubeat machine in the US, same with games like DDR, Sound Voltex, beatmania IIDX and a couple others. Unsure about others though.

Since that era is over i now had to move on to sound voltex. Competitive SDVX looks fucking insane especially when does 666 on the hardest level. It's literally a boss song.

The only arcades in America are either show biz type pizza joints (ie. Chuck e Cheese, Dave & Busters, Shakey's, etc.) or burger joints like the one near my house where there's at most 3 or 4 machines. So basically the arcade era died out in my part of the world

Smaller arcades and mom & pop convenience stores with cab or two are becoming a thing of the past there as well, especially with the added cost and infrastructure needed for newer arcade games.

I used to visit the Round 1 in Denver, CO and it always had the best variety of rhythm games of any arcade I had been to up till then. I couldn't figure out why until I started working there and found out the company is based in Japan. As someone whose been playing rhythm games for almost 20 years, the idea for the cards as a save system for your progress makes so much sense on paper but trying to explain to little Timmy and his mom why they need to pay 3 dollars for a card to "continue playing" is the most frustrating thing. I wish the idea had caught on State-side.

South east asian arcades are like miniature japanese ones
Mostly cause like 90% of the arcade games are imported from japan
Something weird about indonesian arcades specifically though is that, for some reason, they always have like this karaoke section and I have no idea if anyone actually uses them for actual karaoke
Other neat things about south east asian arcades include how one of my local arcades had a 4d movie section and a miniature bumper car section, or one of the big ones in singapore had this massive selection of crane games with stuff like pokemon and hello kitty
(They also imported the bishi bashi arcade game and that game slaps, 10/10 would recommend anyone play the bishi bashi arcade game with friends)

There was an arcade in a mall in my hometown, that had 2 DDR machines. Now, I actually love DDR and used to have a DDR pad at home for my PS2. But I'd come to the arcade, and there would be these kids who would get on the machines and dance backwards. Like, they'd jump around, not even looking at the screen, they would be turned away from the screen at some points. And they'd get perfect or near-perfect scores.
How many fucking times do you need to do a song to be able to do it _backwards_ and still pass?

I'm a pianist and rhythm game player, and the reason why people may "unnecessarily" lift their hands in the air or do weird moves is because it makes your moves flow more naturally, making you feel more immersed in the music and making you perform better. Keeping stiff and just activating the buttons is what you may do when playing first time, but there's no flow in that, and the act of pushing down a button and then lifting it in an undefined manner kind of distracts you from the rhythm. But when you get better and more comfortable with the game, it helps a lot to make it into a kind of dance, bouncing from one note to the next one. Accenting certain notes with unnecessary movements makes it easier to digest and stay in rhythm and put it into your muscle memory.

The cube game you are thinking of is JuBeat, by the way. As for Nesica cards working, probably not, but I know that with like Initial D cards and probably others as well, the data is saved on the card itself so you can use it on machines at cons.
