Obviously, the ex understands that he needs to get his own place, but he is probably scared and on uneven ground unable to get himself a good and secure home.
Tony being a good man allows him to stay until the ex gets his feet under him again. The wife feels similar in the way that she wants him out of the house, but under comfortable conditions. Otherwise she wouldn't have invited him back.
The key word here is the husband is ALLOWING the ex to stay.
Not being stepped all over and being forced to tolerate his wife's ex at their house.
He is a man that is very secure in himself and his relationship who also has a kind heart and understanding views.
Obviously, it has led to an unusual situation, but what more can you really want in a partner?

maybe you'll be in an adult relationship one day; don't worry, most people don't have them. If you cannot break up respectfully and maintain friendship afterwards; either one or both of you are crazy or immature. It is normal for people to try and be together in life and realize you don't mesh well and separate on good terms. Being in bad relationships with poor communication skills and lack of understanding of each other lead to toxic break ups. As long as both people maintained mindfulness throughout the relationship, breaking up is just something that happens and you should still be able to respect each other and yourselves.

My mom was in the same situation. Her ex husband stayed in the house with her current one for years. I still called him my step dad because that was my brothers dad and when he got sick I moved him into my place until he passed away on Valentine’s Day. Both men were on the same track so it can happen but only if they are mature about the situation.

I have a similar situation my husband and I are friends with my ex of 15 years and his wife. We are all friends, hang out on regular bases. I am godmother to their son. Relationships are unique.
This is interesting, I think the two guys have formed a friendship legit. Even if hes his wifes ex he knows its over between them and he feels for the guy. They shouldnt just kick him out, let him know he needs to go. Give him a few months to get a place set up then he can leave. Well...my x stayed with our eldest son for a while,some 6hrs drive from where i lived on beach frontline.She was creating problems for our son and his wife,..so i said...get her down here before your marriage is on the rocks. Better the devil you know ,than the devil you dont know. So,..for the 1st month she was in my apartment,..we shared the same double bed....but no hanky panky at all.When her stuff arrived,...she moved into the spare room..for about 2yrs...untill she started going thru my phone...that was it.
