Patternmaking Fundamentals for the 3d Artist - Marvelous Designer/Clo3d/Everyone

  • This is one I've wanted to do for a while now. It's what I wish I had known when I started out, because the basic structural elements of patterns are never explained, it's just "this goes here and you do it". So I worked hard on this one, I really hope I explain things well enough.
I'll keep making videos, and sharing what I know, and they will always be free, but I have set up a donation link, and if you'd like to donate and you can afford it, that would be awesome too.

i just wanted to join the chorus of praise to say this is absolutely one of the best possible entries to the world of not only Clo3D, but the critical fundamentals of pattern drafting, as well. 2 hours is a long time to sit down and watch what is essentially a lecture on making clothes, but i find myself watching this repeatedly, and discovering new nuances as i grow my understanding during my own practice. more than once i've found myself curving a side seam while whispering, "it's just a dart... they're all just darts..." in wonderment.
all this to say, creators like you are what keep the University of TH-cam™alive and well.

I DID go to fashion college and spent 20 years in the industry, You definitely have a vast knowledge of sewing details. I am super new to MD (1 month in) and This is completely different from using illustrator/photoshop (what most of us use to design). Your videos have helped me IMMENSELY! thank yoy!

I also studied fashion and this is useful. although I wish I could just add darts anywhere I wanted and not have to worry about the seam. maybe one day we will have a 3d rotary loom that could weave bespoke shapes.

I'll keep making videos and sharing what I know, and they will always be free. When I first started learning 3d art, I was totally broke (like most artists) but I very specifically remember the people who would put out free tutorials, and I was always so thankful for them. Without those free tutorials back then I absolutely would not be where I am today, so I want to do the same. Every time I upload a video it's overwhelming to see how many people want to learn, and you're learning from me. It's... really cool. Thanks :)

Although the creator may no longer be active on TH-cam, I wanted to express how much I enjoyed this tutorial - it's truly the best! As someone who works with multiple 3D software programs, I found it incredibly valuable.

im not gonna lie this is hands down the best beginners tutorial I've seen 0 wasted time 100% pure knowledge no fumbling or distracting inner commentary that usually balloons out the run time of most tutorial videos thorough explanation of the process and how it makes sense to you. Thank you for sharing this

This should be standard MD/CLO3D training for everyone, thank you so much - it helps the fitting / refitting, creation of patterns towards a character and understanding of the why followed by the how to achieve the what. Only downside is that I immediately saw all the changes I need to make to all the garments I created to far to make them better (ok, that is an upside, too).

Hey Daniel. After learning environment design and basically the whole pipeline, I'm learning characters and sculpting for the second month now. Clothing for characters is one of the most important things in this process and learning from You is one of the best things that happened to me on my journey. Thanks a lot for your quality opinions and courses/tutorials, keep up the good work! Love to mention You when people asks me where I've learned some tips, tricks and overall workflow.

This video was extremely helpful, thanks for making it! I'm so thankful you explain the "why" of all these pattern elements. My mind was blown when you showed the purpose of the bodice front dart is to essentially make a cone around the apex. No other video I've seen explains that, not even non-digital patternmaking videos. Making clothes for 3d models is exciting on its own, but I think Clo3d is also a great tool to help me learn how to make clothes in real life. Thanks again!

Thank so much for this tutorial, there's fundamentals here I've never seen covered or explained so clearly anywhere else and provide an amazing conceptual framework for really understanding what's going on in patterns. I feel energized and excited by what I learned here and how some of my gaps in understanding that I didn't even realize I had now feel addressed. Will be recommending your videos to anyone I know who uses MD, and am eager to watch more and follow your work, thanks again!

Hi Daniel! This is the most valuable MD tutorial I ever saw! I learned to use the tools in MD earlier but I never understood the basics of darts, curvatures and angles. I struggled a lot with figuring out what to do and I was thinking to apply to real-life sewing courses to understand these. Now you showed almost everything! Thank you very much! :) Can't wait to make some new garments with this newly learned knowledge. Btw, I'm thinking to switch over to Clo3D. The fullness tool looks like something I always needed but never knew about :)

I really appreciate that you take the time to cover the fundamentals of making clothing and not just cover how the tools work, which I feel is the most important block of information when it comes to building a good understanding and approach towards clothing creation. Hope you have a great day, cheers!!

The changes you're talking about at the 42 minute mark WILL change things in the finished garment because fabrics have grainlines and often prints on them - how you lay out the pattern determines how a piece is cut with respect to the grainline, which changes the drape and behavior of the fabric.

Same here. This man is treasure. Every single thing he does in his videos is legitimately helpful. How many people actually explain how to make a skirt look evenly straight from front to back? Or even how and why the folds should look when a character moves in the outfit?
I'm sad that he can't make videos anymore because of his career, but he definitely deserves to be paid well for his knowledge. I'm so grateful that he even has videos up to show us his knowledge.
