I'm a 59 year old guy and I have never hunted in my life. I'm barely going through the Hunter-Ed course and naively, I thought that every hunter would practice strict ethical hunting the way the course teaches it. On the one hand, It is somewhat discouraging hearing that so many people do not practice ethical hunting but on the other hand, it is very encouraging hearing and seeing people like yourself and others that have made comments on this page that do hunt the way it is intended to be and adhere to the ethics of hunting and carry the true spirit of hunting. Cheers from Colorado.
And here I am trying to get close enough to use my 44 caliber black powder revolver lol Lotta people sure have a lot of different ideas how to go about hunting, but long range was never for me
I agree with you 100%. Now ask these same hunters if they are using lead free bullets like the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. is requesting. They care nothing if these same deer they lost poison eagles, crows, hawks, etc. I went lead free 15 years ago, much better bullets. I avoid hunters as much as possible & I hunt the Coues every year. As for archery hunters it is now a game of $2000+ Hoyt/Mathew’s bows, I’m so repulsed by this sport (people) that I’m ashamed to call myself a hunter. Now don’t even get me started on trail cameras.
Oh that new Mathews Lift bow is nice. Shot one the other day at local archery shop...sweet. But my 4yo Vertix was enough of an investment for this old guy's budget. Even modern archery equipment takes a lot more commitment & dedication in order to execute & perform than squeezing the trigger on a rested rifle. And therein lies the problem with lost deer/elk in the archery pursuit. Most hunters I observe at archery ranges and in the field are simply not efficient nor proficient with their archery equipment. They attempt shots on deer/elk that are beyond their ability or worse...
I hunted the Coues with recurve & longbow for several decades. What I noticed is that when you close the distance to 20-25 yards they are so fast in their reflexes (jump the string) it is impossible to judge the outcome. With a compound I found it much easier. Anyway enough of my opinions, I wish you a healthy, happy New Year. Good luck down on the Gila. @@MavHntr
I hunt with a long bow and never kill anything that must make me the best hunter on the planet according to you. But then again I can never be as elevated in my prowess as a ethical hunter as a man who uses copper bullets. What an amazing person! You're so awesome. I hope everyone gives you high fives for saving the planet and being ethical all the time. Can I ask? Are you the massia have you come down to bring your kingdom to us all. Goodness! What an amazing time to be alive.
I always take range estimates with a grain of salt. I used to compete in high power rifle matches, shot at 200, 300, and 600 yards. At 600 yards it doesn't take much to cause a bad shot.
Competing in rifle match, that's knowing your equipment and other influences such as wind variables! Whether 600 yards rifle shot or 60-yard bow shot, the deer/elk only needs to move at the wrong time. A hunter must be as much in-tune to the animal as his weapon & surrounding conditions'. Live game so different than a stationary range target anchored in place.
What we need to accept is that the public (voters) will ultimately decide about our future of hunting. It's a very hard sell to convince people that long range shooting is remotely ethical, fair chase, etc. We are our own worst enemy. With You Tube there are no secrets.
Few secrets left. However the misinterpretations of YT viewers, hunters, non-hunters, granola peeps and PETA animal activists can be unscientifically dangerous for this recreation of hunting as we knew of it.

Better a late start at 59 than never. Hope you have some great outdoor experiences as you venture into your future hunts.

Right on, getting in close, the ultimate challenge!

Long Bow, talk about a challenge! In my early years, used a recurve and that was tough enough at 30 yards.
