  • Check it out! The 2023 MTH Premier 3 truck 3 cylinder shay steam locomotive from the Train Loft has arrived! We take a look at an engine you may not find elsewhere on TH-cam with Eric's Trains, RBP Trains, or Country Bunkers Trains. Although some other custom runs from Mr. Muffins and Brady's Trains are nice, they aren't as colorful and cool as this! With a colorful yet realistic color scheme from The Train Loft, we take a look at what the shay is and what this engine offers, then run this masterpiece around the layout. So join us!

    Love the locomotive! Could definitely see it trundling along through the Appalachians or Alleghenys in the company of Heisler's, Climaxes, Logging Mallet's, Mikado's, and so many more!

    I have the older, PS2 version and it's builder plates are the actual tiny brass plates and the front coupler is an operating electro-coupler. These new models have the rule-17 lighting, a better sounding whistle and of course whistle steam. I love that green, as you said, it highlights details which are sometimes lost on a black locomotive.

    Nice looking. Runs beautifully as expected of MTH. The one thing that I don't like is the crew talk. Sounds like they subcontracted it out to Lionel. Too clean sounding, no typical 2-way radio static or interference.

    Super. That is an impressive locomotive, and I love the whistle. I've always wanted to kitbash a fantasy four trucked Shay, but make it with "D" trucks, versus "B" trucks. Can you magine a 32 wheel Shay, Climax, Willamette, or Heisler? I bet that it would pull the wallpaper off of the wall. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

    Great looking engine! My O scale layout is modeled after the Cass Scenic Railroad. I have a pretty big fleet of geared engines including Shay's, 2 Climax engines, and a Heisler. You mentioned about the engine being a little jerky and breaking it in. One thing I do on a regular routine basis with my Shay's is to make sure you use a hobby specific grease ( I use Lionel ) and grease the splines of the drive side wheel, try to get half the circumference. To do this, I use a tooth pic to work the grease in. If you get half of each circumference of the wheel, the pinion gear on the shaft will pick up the grease. The grease will help give the gears a nice mesh and smoother operation. I would also purchase a small plastic needle tip hobby bottle for oiling the piston area and crank shaft, I have used singer sewing machine oil. Again congrats on your great looking engine! I have ordered the 2023 MTH Western Maryland Shay 6 and should have it soon!

    Beautiful engine and a great review. I still think the quality of MTH Trains is better than Lionel 85% of my collection is MTH

    It definitely is a beautiful engine, but it annoys me that I haven't seen a video where someone has changed the chuff rate. Needs to be like 8 chuffs or more per revolution. It can be changed in the remote.

    • @gizmotrains
      @gizmotrains  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for clarifying this!!! In the video I gave it set to 6. Seemed to make sense to me, 3 cylinders and seemed two strokes a wheel revolution. Do you say it should be more like 8?

    • @MMID303
      @MMID303 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't know the exact rate. But from what I've read, a 3 cylinder Shay typically has 12 chuffs per revolution. Ultimately, it is a model so I wouldn't worry too much. They say it should sound like its doing 60mph at 6 mph. You would need to be running it very slow. If you like running it faster, you can always reduce the chuff rate to make it look/sound better to match the speed. You can be the judge of that. I do love the green paint job on this!

    Nice Model of the Western Maryland SHAY #6 .The paint scheme is Eeeeeh , and the SOUND system in this model does NOT even closely Resemble the Exhaust sounds of a REAL Shay . Perhaps the Exhaust sound can be corrected to simulate the Very RAPID exhaust rate of a Geared three cylinder Shay Locomotive . The REAL Shay operates at the CASS Scenic Railroad in Cass West Virginia . Shay #6 was the LARGEST Shay Every built .
    and used to haul Coal on the Chaffee Branch of the Western Maryland RR .
    Cheers ! Enjoy : )

    • @gizmotrains
      @gizmotrains  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can set the chuff rate higher in settings for the sound, so anyone looking at getting one no fear. You can make it sound realistic
      I thought I had it set high enough, but speaking with others in the comments I should have it much higher, so I’ll tweak around it.
      A few Shays remain in operation, but in the past they were used all over the country. As well several different classes and configurations.
      Thanks for watching!

    are you able to adjust the chuff rate? as delivered its way off. its a 2 piston chuff on a 3 piston engine and way to slow for the speed

    • @gizmotrains
      @gizmotrains  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea you can adjust it. I turned it up, but apparently not enough.
