      @@loeysgalaxy6283 i kinda feel like it was racist to put her character on this list, cuz essentially the argument is even though her character canonically doesn't look at all like her heritage and is being portrayed to reflect that its still wrong because she doesn't look Hawaiin or chinese enough. and to me that's wrong, that's not any better. its like saying you can only boast about your ethnicity as long as you look stereotypically ethnic enough.

    • @VirtualVixen.
      @VirtualVixen. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@littlekaren1551 But it's not like that, the video even said so herself. It wouldn't matter if she didn't look 'hawaian' or 'chinese', the fact of the matter is, she isn't of any of those backgrounds. So it would have been better to cast a partly hawaian or asian person to play this role, even if they didn't look like it at all. So If they would have taken a hawaian/chinese girl with maybe red hair and blue eyes, their would be no problem. Stone is fully white/american. So it just doesn't feel right to let her play the role of someone with a different heritage. It has nothing to do with her looks.

    • @littlekaren1551
      @littlekaren1551 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@VirtualVixen. I'm all for casting an actor that is accurate to the character ethnically and looks wise. but you also have to cast in a way that keeps true to who the character is as a person. Allison Ng was proud of her heritage, but looked nothing liked it, therefore constantly bragged about it so poeple would know she was Hawaiian, and chinese. as Danielle Louise pointed out a chinese kid coming out with red hair and blue eyes is rare, it would've been rarer to find a chinese with that description with the right age. what would they have done if they couldn't find someone like that? because casting an asian or Hawaiian because they are that heritage despite looking nothing like her would have made half of her personality/behavior pointless, weird, and bizarre. she wouldn't act that way at all, because there would be no point. and her character is a lesson how can't you judge a book by its cover. you don't always look like your heritage, despite what your genetics actually are. case in point poeple have confused my stepdad as my bio-dad, cuz we look a bit alike. we have no commonality in our ethnicity/genetics.

    • @littlekaren1551
      @littlekaren1551 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      plus, which made it more cringey? the fact that's she's not ethnically the same as the character or that emma stone's white? would there have been a fuss if her character was dark skinned and being portrayed by a dark skinned actor who was not the same ethnicity? probably not when you consider how often darker skinned minorities portray native americans on TV despite not being native american and no one ever talks about that.

The movie "wouldn't work today" if he were the protagonist we are supposed to be rooting for, but that's not what this character is. @@mogshade66 Very original, attacking age. What will be next, grammar? I am married, so probably old enough to watch adult movies. If you think age is only merit for having an opinion.
      Maybe if you think before attacking someone, you will notice that it is irony. Because those characters are supposed to be bad and they shown them as "not fit for modern times movies"? It is crazy.
      Yes, Woke is disgusting term for extremists who take it too much to left. I am liberal, but normal, not extremist and normal people can´t agree with those extremists who want to cancel everything they don´t like, who criticize 50 years old movies (like if they don´t know how time works and that perception of things is changed in time), who want quotas and no creative freedom.
      Because if writers/ directors can´t use any characters they want, but have to have characters that are in line with some agenda, then it is not creativity, but propaganda - which is thing for dictatorship countries.
      In separate post I wrote this. Maybe it will help you understand what I was meaning.
      8. Why? Because Hawaians are racist and would not allow white people to live among them, to marry, take husband name and be raised as hawaians?
      It is bad to be proud hawaian and not looking like one? So if you move to other country and lives there for long time, or you are raised in that country, you can´t take it as your home? You can´t be proud on that country? You know that there are some black people who are proud Russians? Do you considter this also racist? Or cultural insensitive?
      7. So if she is gay it is OK. But if she found out she is bisexual, it is bad? You know that in movies improbable thing happens all the time?
      6. So you saing that bad people can´t be in movies? So no killers, invasive aliens, nothing? Only positive characters? Because he wasn´t show as good guy in Scream. Or even antagonist needs to be woke?
      5. So you sayng that asians are only one type of people, smart and resourceful. All other depcitions are wrong? There are no variations?
      3. Stiffler - OK? And what? He isn´t main character, he isn´t role model. Same as your point in Scream. If you want only positive characters in movie, than we will have very weak movies when there is no stakes at anything because there aren´t any bad, stupid, or creepy characters.

    I'm a bit forgiving when comes to Mammy. Honestly, speaking as Black Caribbean man, a lot of our grandmothers, great-aunts and so on were in that role of working for others and doing what they can to survive. interesting that at the beginning they say things have gotten better yet, we are in the middle of a post apocalyptic movie. We have a pandemic that is requiring us to wear masks and distance ourselves, we are dealing with a political system that is divided, disconnected from the general public, ineffective and unliked. Small businesses are shutting down. People are forced to take gig jobs shuttling customers who don't have cars but have more than enough to pay those with cars to chauffer them around. So we live in a culture where you can't make a joke without offending anyone. Even if you resemble the actual person who is a quarter Hawaiin you can't do so if you are not a Hawaiin with the proper stereotypical appearance? Our music is all computer generated, devoid of musicians, instruments and soul. Our television shows are lame, low budget, season long reunion specials of what our parents watched. Our movies are reboots retelling the same origin stories to characters who have been well established for decades.

Even if gone with the wind was never made, which might have been for the better frankly, white people of the 30s, 40s 50s and 60s would still have been too racist to put african Americans in any roles other than those of servants.

      The producer of the film, David O. Selznick, knew how racist the original book was and wanted to avoid the extreme stereotypes as much as possible compared to films that were made before "Gone with the Wind". He was the pioneer, and he started in the 50s. And he did NOT play servants. So, you're completely and 100% wrong. Do some research before posting nonsense like this.
      It also might amaze you that Gone With the Wind isn't about racism, the Civil War, or the South. That's not what the story is about. Have you actually seen it? It's about Scarlett, and her selfish inability to relate well to people, even ones who care about her. It's about her and Rhett Butler. It's art. It's an epic, and it revolutionized the film industry in ways that still affect us today. And, it's also a product of its time.

      It's still cringe all across the board. People are overlooking it now because they are trying to get even with Hollywood casting white people for all of these decades. But in the end, the authenticity of the movie-going experience is gone because no one wants to be accurate and tell genuine stories. I think Jodie playing Anne Boleyn (which just went too far imo) was because of the popularity of Hamilton. But what works on Broadway doesn't work in film. Honestly, it shouldn't work anywhere because I was uncomfortable with Black people portraying slave masters in Hamilton, too. Hopefully, we start to move over the "Race-bending" and "Cultural-bending" and let movies feel more authentic and high quality.

    Though I can't claim to have had my heritage or social status make me the target of offensive or stereotypical portrayals, it occurs to me that many of these roles of the past do anything but glorify such behaviour. For instance, Stifler's actions were certainly offensive, however, he's portrayed as a buffoon and the object of ridicule for doing , very obviously, inane, exaggerated, over-the-top asshattery. My point is that the character is portrayed in such a way, his behaviour is seen as asinine and certainly nothing to be emulated. As the series progresses, the character grows emotionally and becomes something of a flawed but decent human being. I agree that this type of behavior and attitudes need to be addressed, but imo trying to act as if things weren't once that way, is part of the problem. Perhaps, it would be more productive to address the very serious issues of our society's ,apparently, poor self image and lack of any effective coping strategies. We should applaud the progress that we have made,in contrast with how we were.

    It's getting harder to make films that accurately reflect how reality is in place of what the would "should be." Assholes are real, but now it has to be only specific types. As unfortunate as it is, people are still mysoginistic, racist, sexist, manipulative, etc. It's not about saying these are okay, but to restrict films from having them, at least from villains to intentionally unlikable characters, limits not just the types of movies and characters, but even moral lessons.
    Now, when talking about casting, yeah, that's something that has to change when you don't want somebody to pretend to be something they aren't. People would have to portray a stereotype of somebody to do it.

    • @michelleannor6944
      @michelleannor6944 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      People can't handle realism.
      There are misogynistic/ racist people but certain groups equate this with promoting misogyny or racism unless the character is truly awful. If a good looking likeable character who just happens to be racist is seen as racist because the character is portrayed as handsome/ likeable.
      In reality people know racists who aren't stereotypical "villains" or ugly etc.

    If Emma Stone can't play Ng because she isn't Asian, and if the Avatar cast is problematic for the same reason, then I fail to understand how Hamilton isn't just as problematic. Either race matters or it doesn't. I'm all for being accurate in how characters are portrayed on screen and stage. But that has to go both ways. Whitewashing is terrible (looking at you, Mickey Rooney), but you don't get equality by permitting the same behavior in the other direction. Either we abandon any casting standards, or they apply for everyone.
    The accent thing is logically possible in Johnny 5. If the parents spoke their native language in the home, children often grow up with accents. That said, a white guy putting on a Hindi affectation is dumb as hell.
