I’ve just now found your channel. Your teaching skill is excellent. I will recommend your channel to other learners. I am an ABC (American-born Chinese). I moved to China for a number of years. Almost every time I said nihao to someone, they would ask, 你是哪儿的人?(Where are you from?) I didn’t know why they would ask that. Was it my tones? Hard to get the tones wrong for nǐhǎo. After about three years or so, I realized that it might be because Chinese natives don’t say nihao. They just say, ng! Do you think that’s true?
Thank you for your good feedback and you can find the anwer about the Chinese greetings in this video: th-cam.com/video/aWhDYAFQhAI/w-d-xo.html And I mentioned "ng" in the video :)
@@AskAndy I had already watched that video, which by the way is excellent. You said it’s OK to greet people by saying, nǐhǎo. So it seems the reason Chinese natives respond with, “你是哪儿的人?” might be because they already observed that I am not a native Chinese; so since I initiated a greeting, they took the opportunity to confirm that or to find out more. Anyway, I didn’t mind that the native Chinese knew right away I am a foreigner, because that made it easier to start conversations.

Part of sounding more like a native speaker is embracing the culture. I’m black and learning Chinese. I watch a lot of Chinese programming so I can understand the culture and hear the language. I love history and watch a lot of documentaries on Chinese history. I speak to my Chinese coworker so she can correct me. She was born and raised in China and I appreciate her help. I’m not sure outside of his wife and making money that Zuckerberg cares about Chinese culture.
@Sero Suit the people you speak of didn’t actually embrace the culture. If the language of the culture is tonal and you don’t learn tones then how can you communicate?

Wow this was incredibly helpful!!! I've been trying to learn for awhile. I've thought about how we learn languages....and I think something that would be helpful for many learners is to read out loud with a native speaker correcting the tones as they speak. And I always ask for people to correct me in speaking...but many times the person will be shy about that and let the mistake go.

As a language teacher the American, you are correct. The westerner worries too much about tone but it is not that important. They must speak with confidence, good rhythm, be clear, and not be afraid of mistakes. Practice is the best way, speak with the native. But first, consider being in China at the best areas for Mandarin standard. Where is it in China?
Thank you for your good feedback. Northern and central China is better than the southern part of it :) By the way, you can also SHARE my video or channel with your friends who are learning Chinese. @@AskAndy Thanks for the feedback, Andy: this lesson on pronunciation tips especially on stress was very helpful. Paradoxically, it also explains why many Chinese don't sound like English speakers, stressing the last part of words. 'First' becomes 'firSTE.' for example... Yes, regarding your approach, you provide intuitive logic that works, which I enjoy rather than passive rote learning that is so boring in comparison. (I can point out some other features in your English that you might like to improve if you wish - basically just fine-tuning. That said, you already have a very agreeable and captivating speaking style. ) Best wishes to you and your wife.

Interesting about stressing the second syllable. No teacher every taught me that. Maybe they feel it is too advanced a concept for beginners, but it seems pretty important.
That may be the difference between language teachers and linguists. Language teachers teach you the content (pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar which are WHAT) and then you need to "practice makes perfect" while linguists study languages and let you know WHY and HOW so that you can learn better and faster.
No problem. th-cam.com/users/AskAndy There are lots of videos not only about WHAT but also about WHY & HOW on my channel👆. You can check them all out but you can't find them anywhere else.
Great analysis in the first half of the video! But In the 2nd half, I don’t understand what u meant by “the tone of 南京话 is wrong”. (Btw, I’m a native Chinese speaker)🤗
Excuse me once again, so I can use shízhe (try to do sth) in a tense like in this sentence: I'm trying to learn Chinese, so how it would be? Wo zhèng zài shìzhe xuéxí zhöng wén? Sorry some stress are not on my keyboard, am I wrong about the use? Isn't a verb?
Good analysis! I started studying Chinese around a year and a half ago (and although I'm far from being fluent, I feel I have a good grasp of the tones). I watched that interview around a month after I started learning the language, and I remember I had no trouble whatsoever to understand what Zuckerberg was saying, and I even thought his pronunciation is quite good, haha. Now though...It is a different story. His sentence structure and tones were so off that I didn't get a lick of what he was talking about (past the 我的中文很糟糕 part), and I had to wait for you to repeat his words. Maybe elementary students have an easier time understanding each other because they make similar mistakes. But I guess, the more your tones and overall pronunciation improve, the harder it is to understand "bad" Chinese.

I think it’s a shame you view the other “dialects” as less than Mandarin, and not as true languages. I don’t know enough about Nanjing dialect to comment on it specifically but in general Iw ould assume the speakers of a dialect have found their own unique and complete forms of expression. In the US we have dialects (and in this case they really are dialects, not languages, because they’re mutually intelligible which many Chinese dialects are not) which have less prestige than others, but the ones with less prestige are understood by linguists to be complete and fully logical in their own way just like the prestige dialects. E.g., African American English is quite different from white English, but actually follows its own internal grammar and phonology. I enjoy your videos a great deal.
I think that a lot of people fail because they don't notice the different pronunciation of the sounds or even how to make them. They don't move the tongue the the proper place to make the proper chinese pronunciation. The pronounce the letters like they would pronounce them in english.
we name first the other person "my dad and I" also in writing. We do this out of respect. Chldren learn it at school. You don't have this concept in chinese?
For sure he could. But this is the latest conclusion of my research. Maybe no other Chinese teacher have the idea of stress in Chinese because no textbooks mention that so far.

How the fuck is he a good programmer / coder when he can’t even get basic grammar down pat. Makes me scratch my head. Btw Andy your English pronunciation is excellent. If I did not see you were Chinese I would assume you are American or Canadian and at the very least think you are an international citizen. In fact your English is very international. Meaning your accent is very neutral .
I find Mandarin Chinese impossible to learn, and my pronunciation and tone are terrible at best, and yet even I don't sound as bad as Zuckerberg. Listening to his speech was pretty cringy, to be honest.

I’m not sure outside of his wife and making money that Zuckerberg cares about Chinese culture.
Good point! Thank you for sharing your story!👍
@Sero Suit the people you speak of didn’t actually embrace the culture. If the language of the culture is tonal and you don’t learn tones then how can you communicate?
I am also black and learning Chinese ! Let’s go fam

No problem.

Its hard for me to find a native who doesnt laugh at me and degrade me for not knowing
Northern and central China is better than the southern part of it :)

Some really good advice.
I want to learn the proper way to speak Chinese. Thanks😊

@@AskAndy For me, that's the most enjoyment I get out of learning Chinese, the why and how! Thanks for what you do.

I was confident, but after watching this video I took a step back to start over 😫
Today's important point
我的中文很糟糕,但是我试着说中文
Great analysis in the first half of the video! But In the 2nd half, I don’t understand what u meant by “the tone of 南京话 is wrong”. (Btw, I’m a native Chinese speaker)🤗
我是从老外的视角出发的。只是想告诉他们即使普通话的声调错了,只要重音和节奏是对的,大多数的中国人还是可以听懂的。所以第二部分是南京人说普通话的发音问题,尤其是相对于普通话而言的声调错误问题
You are right👍
Good analysis!
😁Thank you for sharing your story! That's interesting!

"Thank you for coming" , it can be said "谢谢大家 的到来"?? Or how it would be?
It's better to say "感谢大家的到来". 感谢 is more formal than 谢谢 and usually we only say "thank you for coming" on formal occasions

Andy, your English is almost perfect. There's one pronunciation you should watch out for, though. 'Video' is pronounced as if 'viddeo' (lax 'i'). It failed to get Anglicanized to fit the few rules.
Thank you for your comment and time, my dear friend! I've always been trying to improve my English and I know there's a long way to go.
@@AskAndy Not a long way at all.
@@AskAndy To improve you english greatly, don't add an extra sound after words ending in d ot t. This is a common mistake.
Is "试着" also used as imperativ (beside durativ form)?
No. 试着 is for TRY TO DO STH
@@AskAndy it is not imperativ?
Thanks a lot

我很高兴来到北京。
Priscilla parents heritage is Vietnamese- Chinese descent
I think that a lot of people fail because they don't notice the different pronunciation of the sounds or even how to make them. They don't move the tongue the the proper place to make the proper chinese pronunciation. The pronounce the letters like they would pronounce them in english.

Hello Andy,
Even though Mark Zuckerberg's wife is Chinese-American, he needs more time to improve his Chinese....
You are right. That's why I made this video for English speakers like Mark to know how to improve...
patreon is pronounced PAY-TREE-ON, pay as in "pay the bill". not PAH-TRON. it's a play on the word patron.
Thank you for correcting me.
we name first the other person "my dad and I" also in writing. We do this out of respect. Chldren learn it at school. You don't have this concept in chinese?

Btw Andy your English pronunciation is excellent. If I did not see you were Chinese I would assume you are American or Canadian and at the very least think you are an international citizen. In fact your English is very international. Meaning your accent is very neutral .
I find Mandarin Chinese impossible to learn, and my pronunciation and tone are terrible at best, and yet even I don't sound as bad as Zuckerberg. Listening to his speech was pretty cringy, to be honest.
