    @jimjam69: Sean Connery had his rivals (Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnam, etc), but no one compares to Guy Williams. :)

    Yet another of one of the fastest sword duels *and one of the best* in the whole series even outside of Zorro. *Definitely the speediest and in some ways hilarious of them in this show :D *

    I love how he sat in that chair fighting with his 'cheeky' smile. Guy Williams was real Zorro.

    Disney hired an expert swordsman to practice with Williams, even he commented on how skillful Guy was.

      That would be Fred Cavens, one of the best fight arrangers of his time, he how fights were made from the 1930s onward, he got actors to have actual choreography like a dance, properly balanced like swordsmen should be and with proper attacks and parries, even a little rough and tumble as time went on. He's actually in a couple of episodes; if you've seen "Zorro Fights a Duel", you'll have seen him, he played Monsieur Gerard, the french swordsman who sparred with Ricardo. Fred was Belgium so the accent was real, which is why he's completely silent when fighting Senor Avilla in the episode "An Affair of Honour" he and his son Albert were Avilla's opponents during the Fencing gambling at the beginning. Albert was also the Ship's captain in the first episode and the Sailor fighting Zorro with a sword on the ship in the hour long special "The Postponed Wedding".

      I've been reading Guy Williams' biography. Apparently, Cavens worked with all the great Zorro actors of the time: Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, and Guy Williams. Of them, he apparently said Fairbanks was the most flamboyant, Power the most serious student, and Williams the most talented. Quite a compliment for Guy!

    • @ChaoticNarrative
      @ChaoticNarrative 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Fred Cavens was a strict instructor, so a compliment from him is no small thing.

    • @fionatsang9353
      @fionatsang9353 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From what I've read, Cavens was very proud of Guy and Britt Lomond. They were both keen fencers and would rehearse their duelling scenes constantly; Cavens often said that he wished all his other students could have the same level of dedication.

    You know what I got a laugh out of? Carlos Murieta's excuse for his injured hand ("cut himself shaving," my left foot!), and Bernardo's sign-language comments to Diego after everyone else left - "You weren't being Zorro last night - you were acting Cupid!" I laughed just as hard as Diego did!

    I was about five when this show came on TV, which was very new then. There was SOMETHING about this handsome man which set my young heart aflutter, and 50 years later he still does!I remember falling asleep with my Zorro comic book under my pillow, knowing he was the most handsome and exciting man alive. I think that my first crush on this sexy Spaniard is what led me to marry my sexy Mexican husband. Thanks for posting these clips which bring back great memories!

    LOL!! You had a crush on Zorro?! Thats awsome (in a humurous way)! But yeah, I think this series is the best. Maybe even better than the Zorro movies.

  • @Gipsymom
    @Gipsymom 15 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yes, his family was actually Italian, but he portrayed a Spaniard as Zorro. The early rancheros in California were pure Spanish before intermarrying with the local Indians. Mexicans are mixed blood of mostly Spanish and the indigenous peoples, who are also Indians. There is also some French blood, thanks to Napoleon's soldiers and his puppet emperor Maximilian. I have Mexican friends who have light hair and green eyes, probably from those French soldiers :)

    @AXEFLYERFV I agree with you - I've seen Banderas play Zorro, and I've seen part of the 1940 "Mark of Zorro" movie (oh, dear Lord in Heaven, what stiff, fakey-looking acting!! I had to switch to another TH-cam video when Diego went to greet his dad). While Banderas comes in a close second, I have to agree that Guy Williams is the gold standard for Zorros everywhere! (BTW, Nigel Bruce, who I believe played a high-ranking soldier in the 1940 "Zorro" film, played Sherlock Holmes on the radio!)

    It can't believe that a avid TV watcher as a kid I did not see this show. It must have aired in the time slot of a show my father and liked or my sisters liked. I wish knew what was the show that prevented me from seeing Zorro. I know that Ed Sullivan prevented me from seeing the Flintstones!!!! I hated that!!!! In those days few families in my poor neighborhood has two TV Sets!!!
