In history and today there are men and women that prevailed no matter how difficult and almost impossible life was they made a difference in the commen men's lives we are always in debt to them
1. de Moray was the leader of the Scots army at Stirling Bridge. He was the senior Man, the experienced soldier. Wallace was nothing more than a 'scrapper'. 2. This is not Wallace's sword. It's far too large and unwieldy. This sword is a 15th century piece created by King James IV. It is made up of 3 different swords. It is rumoured that Wallace's actual sword was smelted with another 2 swords in order to create this piece. This is a ceremonial sword, or at very best, a sword used for duelling. 3. Wallace most certainly was not 6'6" or taller. The average height at the time was 5'5". What was considered tall then, would then not be considered tall today. Wallace may have been tall by comparison to others. Historians believe Wallace was perhaps 5'8" - 5'10", certainly not the giant he's described as in chronicles written 150-200 years after his death. 4. Wallace showed his lack of military understanding at Falkirk. Once word had reached Longshanks(who was in Linlithgow), that Wallace was only 7 miles away (at modern day Shield Hill), Wallace would also have been aware that Longshanks was once more on the march. Wallace had Callander Wood to his rear, he should've used that to his advantage and retreated towards Stirling. At very worst, Longshanks would've caught up prior to him reaching Stirling, but he could then have utilised the guerilla tactics, ambushing Longshanks army, rendering his cavalry and archers useless. Had he managed to reach Stirling, then he meets Longshanks on perhaps the same ground de Moray defeated the English a year earlier. As it was, Wallace showed a complete lack of understanding, and was humiliated as a result. He then ran away to France. Wallace wasn't a freedom fighter. He was no different to any other Noble. He would've gained had Scotland been 'freed' in his lifetime, make no mistake about it. He was in it for himself. He was being heavily taxed, which he obviously didn't enjoy, so he wanted 'home rule' so his taxes would be reduced. The image we have today of Wallace is an overly romanticised picture painted by the Georgians, and the Victorians. Wallace was an itch on Longshanks rear end which Longshanks eventually decided to get rid of. Many people were executed the same way Wallace had been. It was as common in Medieval times as Crucifixion had been centuries earlier. As Scots, we have to start learning real history, not this romanticised nonsense we've been getting taught for the last 150-200 years.
Scott's.3258. You sound like a bloody Englishman! Were you there so you could vocalize your thoughts? Shut your mouth and leave the Scots history to them.

There is something in our DNA that transcends time or geography because I too, am a proud Scott Warrior and the sounds of Bag Pipes brings a tear to my eye, goosebumps on my skin, and a tremendous sense of Honor, Dignity, and self sacrifice. Our family moved to America, served in the American Civil War, then later served in World War 1 and World War 2. Now we face new oppressors in modern terrorists. You never truly feel the gravity of this music until you are laying to rest a Scottish warrior. They played this song at my grand fathers funeral, (He was a world war 2 veteran) I was overwhelmed with emotion as they played this song, and shot rifles into the sky. RIP Grandpa, I wouldn't be half the man I am today without you. th-cam.com/video/bq54jb_5WCI/w-d-xo.html
Don't confuse the film Braveheart with the true story of William Wallace. Most of the film was glamorised by Hollywood and didn't actually happen. I'll probably be the most hated Scotsman in Scotland for saying that, but it's true.
I found that non-Scottish friends hadn’t thought about Scotland having a separate history or Scots having a different ethnicity until the movie “Braveheart” was released. It got people talking about Scotland, William Wallace, and Robert the Bruce. It got we Scots correcting the misinformation! 🏴💜
@darrensmith7195 Ask the Romans what? Ask the Romans how crazy the Germanic tribes in Pictland were? Ask how crazy the Irish were who moved into what is now known as Scotland?
Scots wha hae wi Wallace bled, Scots wham Bruce has aften led welcome tae yer gory bed or tae victory. See the front o battle lour, see approach proud Edward's power, chains and slavery. . . So long as one hundred of us remain alive we will never submit to the domination of the English for it is not for riches or glory that we fight, but for freedom and freedom alone - that which no good man gives up save with his life. . .
I lost interest when you wrongly stated that he was from Ayrshire. He Was actually from Elderslie, Renfrewshire, and educated at the monastery of the nearby Paisley Abbey.
It was indeed a wonderful presentation. You can't know the future without understanding the past. Too bad Mel Gibson wasn't another 8 inches taller. The movie would have taken on a truly different air.
I remembet seeing "Braveheart" and walking from the Theater extremely disappointed on how badly Randall Wallace (the author of the book the movie was drawn from) had destroyed the story of Wallace. Wallace was never "Braveheart." That nickname/title belongs to Robert the Bruce. Isabella of France, the future Princess of Wales, was 11 years old when Wallace was executed. She was still living in France and not married to Edward II yet. Robert the Bruce did not betray Wallace to Edward the first. Wallace didn't support the Bruce family's claim to the throne. Wallace supported John Baliol, the puppet king installed by Edward I. There's actually no evidence that Wallace and Bruce ever met in the historical record. Wallace was betrayed by John de Menteith, a minor Scottish knight loyal to Edward I. Edward I died in 1307, two years after Wallace' execution. No, "Braveheart," though stirring, was so full of Historical Inaccuracies it bears little resemblance to the real William Wallace.
Please do some great English Knights = Marmaduke Thweng - Ralph Stafford (hundred yrs war) - Bartholomew Burghersh the Younger and his father the elder - Robert Umfraville of redesdale - Francis Vere (Spanish/Dutch wars).

I thought the English archers done most of damage to the Scots at Falkirk before the Calvary charge them. The archers where Welsh mercenaries. correct me if im wrong
The way Wallace was executed was *(imo)* what really caused the English to lose that war: they made him a martyr, and nothing is more powerful an inspiration to fight than that; the gruesome post-execution treatment of Wallace’s remains only worsened that mistake, leading to England’s defeat and Scotland’s indipendence.

Yes we all know it was Bruce and he is the real hero to free Scotland. But Hollywood romantacized Wallace to be more infamous.
They were taking it to Jerusalem, the Douglas was killed en route and his heart was returned.
Long live the Bruce.
@@ianseymour5511 it's buried at Melrose Abbey isn't it? Yeah and the Douglas was a badass.
I can trace my family tree back to the brother of the Douglas. He fell in Spain fighting the moors.

I’ve always wondered if he was actually 6’6”, because fun fact: the ‘foot’ as we know it today was only standardised in 1959 and there were regional variants. So, my strange brain always wondered who measured him to come up with 6’6”.
His sword was 5 foot in length,so you would need to be a big man to wield it .

FREEDOM
He deserved a better onscreen tribute than 'Braveheart'
I learned something today.
Us Scots need a modern Wallace to rally behind.
Personally think Wallace would be turning in his grave at the sight of what Scotland has become.
1. de Moray was the leader of the Scots army at Stirling Bridge.
This is just cringe nonsense. Go away.
The video also omits that Wallace engaged in petty crime in his youth.
Scott's.3258. You sound like a bloody Englishman! Were you there so you could vocalize your thoughts? Shut your mouth and leave the Scots history to them.

I am a DNA linked decent of William Wallace.. thank you gor this family insight
No you aren't
Born in America, but my family is from Scottland and my family Ancestry fought bravely in this war.

Thanks for a very interesting article. Pronunciation of place-names needs work 😮
Don't confuse the film Braveheart with the true story of William Wallace. Most of the film was glamorised by Hollywood and didn't actually happen. I'll probably be the most hated Scotsman in Scotland for saying that, but it's true.
Not to mention that the Scots weren't wearing kilts in that era; makes for a more interesting movie though, I suppose.
Absolutely. Hollywood fairytales
But we are warriors always have been ask the Romans ❤
I found that non-Scottish friends hadn’t thought about Scotland having a separate history or Scots having a different ethnicity until the movie “Braveheart” was released. It got people talking about Scotland, William Wallace, and Robert the Bruce. It got we Scots correcting the misinformation! 🏴💜
@darrensmith7195 Ask the Romans what? Ask the Romans how crazy the Germanic tribes in Pictland were? Ask how crazy the Irish were who moved into what is now known as Scotland?

There are 2 kinds of people, the English, and everyone else lol
I lost interest when you wrongly stated that he was from Ayrshire. He Was actually from Elderslie, Renfrewshire, and educated at the monastery of the nearby Paisley Abbey.
Not me
That man makes us what we are watch out
Wallace was born in Elderslie Renfrewshire . Not Ayrshire
The father of the Confederacy may it rise again!
It was indeed a wonderful presentation. You can't know the future without understanding the past. Too bad Mel Gibson wasn't another 8 inches taller. The movie would have taken on a truly different air.
Freeeeeeèedommmmm
Lightning bolts from his ars
Please do some great English Knights = Marmaduke Thweng - Ralph Stafford (hundred yrs war) - Bartholomew Burghersh the Younger and his father the elder - Robert Umfraville of redesdale - Francis Vere (Spanish/Dutch wars).

Certainly a melodramatic narration, but enjoyable.
“Though he fought valiantly…starvation…brink of death…unwavering care…resolve….”
Easy does it. Not sure if this is historically accurate. Oh wait…I am sure. Historians are historical or they aren’t.

Why ellerslie in Ayrshire and not Elderslie of Paisley in your opinion?
BRAVEHEART the film was historical inaccurate in a lot of leavels,a small Australian actor to portray one of our greatest warrior's.
Funny thing. I watched a series on the "complete history" of England and this dude was barely a footnote. It reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide...mostly harmless 😂😂😂

So I researched. Sure enough we were thrown out in 1690. Mormont rebellion. Nicholas, my great by alot Grandfather was expelled for trying to overthrow a Catholic King, Charles. About 3o years later he saved a community in Newfoundland from French raiders. The English King tried to repatriate him, he declined
