ULTIMATE car camper conversion

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 12 มิ.ย. 2020
  • This is the conversion of my Vauxhall/Opel Corsa 2008. I only had to buy the MDF, which was £5 secondhand (already painted), with the rest lying around the workshop. The mattress was from a cheap folding bed (bought years ago for £10 secondhand). It took an afternoon and is very effective and comfortable for one person. Plenty of storage and does not effect driving
    Soon to follow: Window insulation/covers
    If you’re interested in purchasing a kit like this already made, please contact me on alexpitts25@gmail.com.

    Really awesome work! I am taking some inspiration here. I’d probably seperate the wood or make it foldable so that the wood isn’t in the back of neck when driving. But it’s a great idea. Simple and effective

    It's ingenious, and I would rather drive about in a car than one of those £40k camper vans. I recently toured Scotland, camping in an Insignia estate - ideal for the job as it has a 6ft long and perfectly flat loadspace, so no modification needed apart from blackouts and careful packing of other gear. Oh - and a small pop-up tent so that campsites thought I was sleeping in that!

      Haha fantastic! I’m planning a trip round Scotland next year, however this isn’t quite large enough for two people! Pleased you had a good time - definitely a larger car would be better for this

      @@APITTSfurniture I must admit that I was alone on this occasion, though I'm toying with the idea of using a roof box to carry all the other gear and then the car can just be a mobile double bed.

    This MDF base of the bed and the loose parts (covers), are a potential mortal danger in the event of an accident.
    You should review your design, perhaps cut the MDF into 2 or 3 parts and secure it with screws to the interior chassis of the vehicle.

    A lot of condensation will be created underneath the mattress in particular due to that shiny surface not to mention the sliding around you need breathing holes in any solid surface when sleeping due to body heat moisture.

    • @jsvensson8234
      @jsvensson8234 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not always true. If you do some more research you will find this is very dep. on temp. differentiation & humidity. Different climates will give you different outcomes. Also, very dependant on what type of bed setup you have (is it fixed, will it be moved daily thus allowing it to air out aso). The holes aren't always a good idea... If it's just ventilation you're after, a vent-mat of some sort might be the best choice. Or just flipping your mattress sideways when not in use...

    • @Rasher1974
      @Rasher1974 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jsvensson8234 Hi J, having camped in everything from a Ridge tent , trailer tents, VS campers to more recently caravans, I can assure you body heat transfer to a solid surface which has no way of dissipating will create condensation that's my experience over 40 years of camping and caravanning this young man's bed base will create moisture unless he has an air gap or some form of ventilation such as holes or slits in the bed base board. My experience for what it's worth.

    If you cut your board in half and put a piano hinge on it so you could fold it back and set your mattress on it to have a couch towards the back you would have a place to set if it's a rainy stormy day you wouldn't just have to lay down you'd be able to lay or sit and be comfortable in the back and you could cook if you needed to enjoy yourself and be safe

    You could do something like Foresty Forest did to his minivan. Except that you could have the kitchen behind the drivers seat and you could sleep behind the passenger seat. You just modify the seat a little bit by putting a hole in it so you can put your foot through it and woala.. of course not to forget about the wall and the cover so its an enclosed space.

      Hiya, I simply took basic measurements and drew a rough sketch. I used a circular saw and a straight edge for the main profile, and then a jigsaw to cut out the cubby holes and add round overs to the corners of the platform. I don’t really have any plans so to say, unfortunately. I’d be happy to answer any more questions :)

Thanks for the video, I have a compact hatchback myself and am considering converting it to a camper, but what I see on youtube is mostly huge SUVs :) Love your simple and effective build, but I wouldn't risk driving with that piece of wood above my head... I'm short at only 5'6", and it is comfortable, however comfort in terms of feeling sercure and safe, is difficult to answer. It really depends where you are and if you're doing it with other people.

      I have found several videos of car campers on Bob Wells channel Cheap RV living. You can simply type in his name and then go to his videos tab, I know there are a handful of Prius videos there, also a couple of channels dedicated to small cars to. There is one and right now his name escapes me, Jake is his first name, he moved to Las Angeles and LIVES in his sedan. I think he recently went to San Diego. When I think of his name I will come back and comment on this comment. He has a great build!

I hope that’s understandable but I’m just unsure about the legality of this isit ok to do ? I’ve got a vw polo too haha nice and compact 😉

    • @Anonymouse13
      @Anonymouse13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm on same page and want to do something too but much less permanent. If you make it a permanent fixture make sure to include a crumple zone that will take the brunt of a rear shunt in even of an accident. Ie not one whole piece of wood, that would slide on top of another section if shunted.. Otherwise you're building a battering ram to get pushed forward and crush into the back of driver seat and right into you.
      Also, not sure but remember u can't block a frontside window or the door. Safety first then Mot requirements.

    Hi, congrats! Your project is really good. I'd like to undestand how it works under the shelf you created. I mean... the too parts of wood seam easily foldable, but under them you also accomodate a piece of wood used as support. I would like to use the same stuff, but I couldn't see it very well.
    Is there a picture of this part?

    • @APITTSfurniture
      @APITTSfurniture  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is simply a piece of wood screwed with washers to one side of the ‘tables’ underside. As it protrudes, I routed out a space on the underside of the other flap so that it would fold together completely when the table was only half open. Hope this helps. Alex

    If you get rear ended at high speed, any other safety feature your vehicle has will not protect the back of your head bro ( National Highway Transportation Safety Administration or NHSTA statistics 40% off all car crashes are rear end collisions ) don't trust me look it up people. Also would recommend you consider anchoring heavy things you add in your vehicle so they don't become a projectile inside of your vehicle incase of a accident. Everyone has seen at least one commercial of the lengths car companies go to make cars where we survive a accident. Good luck with the project.
