Hi Guys,
I thought I would share this video with you that we made during a recent client shoot. The shoot was for a hair stylist award and although the project was a professional one, it's wonderfully simple in the lighting technique and approach.
It's what's known as a low key style, basically dark subject matter on a dark background, and is a straightforward 2 light set up. What's really interesting is that for my backlight I substituted my usual studio light with a couple of standard strobes.... I explain why in the video.
The main light is standard 1m square soft-box but carefully placed overhead, but it could just as easily been another strobe into a white brolly. The great thing that I think this shoot demonstrates is that great shots CAN be achieved even with minimal equipment (although I admit I'm using a Hasselblad and my studio!) the real key to the success of a shoot like this is the combination of all involved.... the hair stylists, make up artists and the great work of the models.
Enjoy!

I'm watching it in 2020 cuz iam a begginer photographer and you are a very good teacher.
Thank you
I would like to see a good photo of how you fastened two Canon speedlights together to flash simultaneously. Are they 270s? Also did you use PocketWizards to fire them since you have them directly behind the model? I've enjoyed your videos immensely. Thank you for wanting to teach us.
I'm so glad you made a video on this suject, I'm going to make a shoot like that for the first time and wanted to see an expert working, couldn't have found a better one :D
Did he just put his Hasselblad on the ground?! O_O
Yep: like a beer on a Steinway.
@TheSofielnegar he's using a hasselblad, im not sure on the model, but they take huge resolution images and come with an equally huge price tag
The assistant (at 3:23) should get in front of the camera real soon! (if she hasn't yet been asked to do so)
Very nice video :) I take it your from the west country or near there? Well done and cool studio!
I miss seeing his video's. I especially rejoiced watching him lose lens filters... he is the master of lost and broken filters.
The background music is a tad too loud, maybe something to consider
Great work. I love your videos. All photos that I have taken are by borrowed cameras. Saving up for my very own DSLR. Want to buy a good mid-level body. Would you recommend the 7D?
Also what are the best EF-S lenses I can get in the market for portraits, telephoto and macro works. I'd appreciate if you could guide me.
wow you can use canon lights with a hasselblad ? O.o?
@TheAffinityStudios you mean a hasselblad? haha
karl... what cam did u used in this pictorial
@maimeu kitchen accident it says at the start
IMHO Karl is a god in the photography world
@TheSofielnegar I think he used Hasselblad
ha I thought you always used Broncolor, this was a surprise.
I've shot with Elinchrom, Profoto, Bron, Bowens, Multiblitz and in cameras, Nikon, Toyo, Sinar, Mamiya, Canon, Sony and Hasselblad. They're just tools, in my studio I use what I consider the best tools for the job but they don't make me a better photographer, they just let me do my job more efficiently.
Good job Karl..................Congrats.
This may be a really dumb question... But how do you get the lights to flash when you push the trigger?
Love your vids, major help to a new guy to photography such as myself.
Also find your attitude when shooting models/subjects to be very warming, helping them open up and feel comfortable making it seem easier to work with.
Thanks for the vids, can't wait for more!
doesa softbox just diffuse the light makeing it less harsh ?? random question but ohh well :D
great video yeah and he didnt sit it on the floor it sounded like a low drop look like the model was gonna step on it also...
@maika0staretza Nikon? Haven't seen him with that yet... its either been his Canon's or the Hasselblad for studio work...
What's the difference on using 2 flash units instead of a light bulb for the back lighting?
Your stuff is top notch dude, so much better than all those mugshot ones so many others do :D there's proper creativity in your fashion and glamour shots.
Just spent the last hour watching all your videos, got your free course, then bought your DVD's...... cheers Karl
Follow all your youtube videos! Great photographer and teacher! Bring these video's out more often though ;)
What boom are you using? I'm trying to find the most stable boom and best quality I can afford (max $250) It looks a bit like a Manfrotto
it was an absolute great Video like all your vids...i enjoy every lesson of you! Take care and best wishes from Germay

great video. thanks.
@MrTravisJoe via use of a pocket wizard or other wireless triggering system:)
Wow that is amazing work Karl. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️😀
Nice work - prefer the shots without rim light for hair styling - no flyaways.
Excellent video....keep the great vids coming.
Nice one Karl!
Yes it does. It is more flattering look for a model
its called a studio tripod. same idea as a normal tripod, but way more sturdy.
Fantastic stuff. Excellent interaction with the models. Simple but effective lighting. Love it.
Very good
Power.
Correct
Awesome video! It's great to see how the experts in the field do it. Thank you so much for sharing!
keep these videos coming. they are really helping!
Karl, your a brilliant photographer and a great teacher, love your videos
Yeah, I really love the pictures from the last model in this shoot, quite especially because you captured that black-on-black so beautifully. Excellent job!
What I like about Karl is he can see the shot in his head and is a master of lighting.
Are you use ND filter in the studio work as well?
I have your DVDs and I have to say they are truly spectacular
Hi Karl I am big fan of you keep shooting
nice nice nice
what type of camera is that ?
What was the ratio between rim light and main light?
karl, is great photographer
I love the effect of the reflector.. Great page.
May I ask what mm lens you used? I am shopping for hasselblad or phase, but I am basing my decision on what lens works best for me. I shoot right now mostly with 645Z at 150-160mm, and beauty at 200mm
The Hasselblad H series is essentially also a 645 format camera so the lenses would be the same focal length. I use several different ones, my favourites being the 35-90 for full length to 3/4 length fashion. The 100mm and the 150mm for beauty/portaiture.
Thank you. I will try shooting within those ranges on my camera and see how it feels.
Hi Karl great job!! what kind of material is your background?
Omar Martinez Background material means absolutely nothing in these kinds of shots.
I'm jealous ! Great vid!
Medium format, Hasselblad.
Hasselblad medium format.
My favorite time was 3.26
Hasselblad
Brilliant!
8 people only shoot in natural light :)
28
Karl, that black paper on the ground with all the footprints, do you cut that off as and when, or do you clean it and use again?
cut it off
