It’s good to see the process of building up layers. I have been drawing for over fifteen years, and I will say the hardest part of drawing is knowing what you see opposed to what you think you see.

Ya,so another cool tutorial really enjoyed that one. & it just goes to show ya no matter how good you become it pays to constantly study your example as your working on your piece. It’s to easy to forget something along the way. Reminds me of a world class tattooist that did a tattoo of map of Canada but the west coast was on the east side and east on west.... on a customers arm. Funny thing is it took the guy a few days to realize it was wrong. I’ll bet someone pointed it out to him. Great one though really enjoy your stuff. Thanks so much for all the time, energy & effort you put into your tutorials.

Sorry for probably taking the absolutely wrong thing from this vid, but here goes; For the longest time I've been annoyed that I cant seem to get smooth blends on my minis. They look fine on an arms lenght, but when I take pics with my phone and zoom in, it looks terribly sloppy. About an hour ago I had a look at Mengels version of Rippa Snarlfang (he's one of my favorite painters) and now I see the same thing on that dreadnought - the transitions that look so smooth from 1' away are not that even when zoomed in close. I know this was not what you were going for, but it just gave me great hope for the future of my painting. Maybe my "messy" paintjobs aren't that messy after all? Thx to both of you!

One of the most important things artists do when we have reference....we look at it. A lot. We analyze and stare and draw while we’re looking at the reference. A solid 70-90% of the process is observing the object...at least if you’re serious about drawing the object. Drawing from life is the best way. Set up a prop and a light and some cloth to create some contrast and ground, and draw/paint what you see. Practice. Do multiple angles. Draw big, draw weird, draw in one line, draw in thousands of line. Build up gestalt, and THEN do your final pass. THAT is how you get a good drawing from reference.
Source: artist and art studentttttt. Who needs a nap.

On the topic of reference - Yes, yes, yes! All artists through history painted and sculpted using a refference. Sometimes their own studies, mostly real life references though. And they spent >more< time looking at references than actually painting or sculpting. But clinging on photos as references is a dangerous path. Learning to paint from photos will make you a decent photocopier, not a good painter. I´d say the best way to lose fear of freehand painting is getting a stash of regular A4´s and the cheapest watercolors and painting random stuff at home, in nature, in the street and anywhere. You learn the most by trying to capture stuff that "fades" - things you can´t pause to linger on meaningless details and truly capture the essence. Like a pidgeon that landed on your window. Might be a good trait to learn for both speedpainting and more artistic kind on miniature painting.
