Types of Pollination: Cross-Pollination and Self-Pollination
We look at the apple tree blossom as an example of Cross-Pollination. Apple trees are self-unfruitful, which means their flower blossoms need pollen from a different type of apple tree, and one that is nearby. Because of this, apple tree blossoms need an agent, such as a honeybee, or beetle, or even a bat, to carry pollen from one flower to the next.
    TIMESTAMPS
    00:00 Introduction
    00:10 Table of Contents
03:05 Two Types of Pollination: Cross-Pollination and Self-Pollination
    04:05 Example of Apple Blossom - Cross-Pollination
    04:34 The Stamen
05:10 The Pistil - Stigma, Style, Ovary, and Ovules
05:39 The Pollinator - animals or insects that feed on nectar, such as the honeybee
06:21 Apple Trees are Self-Unfruitful - Pollen needs to be taken from a different type of apple tree
07:49 Movement of Pollen Grain from the Stigma into the Ovary and Ovule
08:27 If you turn an apple upside, you can match up its parts with an apple flower blossom
10:05 Another type of flower requiring Cross-Pollination - Stamen on own flower and Pistil on own flower, and both on the same plant
10:15 This is called a Monoecious Plant
10:29 The Gourd Family are Monoecious Plants, which are Vine Vegetables, or Vine Fruit
10:45 The Gourd Family includes: Squash/Zucchini, Pumpkin, Cucumber, Watermelon, Cantaloupe and Gourds
10:55 Each of these Gourd Family vegetables, or fruits, grew out of a swollen ovary from a female flower on a vine
11:02 Therefore, you only need one plant to obtain fruit
11:10 How to identify the male flower on a Monoecious Plant - 2 Features
11:27 How to identify the female flower on a Monoecious Plant - 2 Features
11:45 A Pollinator, such as a bee, is needed as the agent to carry the pollen
12:09 After successful pollination, the the fruit of the vine swells up and grows into the large fruit, such as squash, pumpkin, cucumber, watermelon, cantaloupe and gourds
12:40 Dioecious Plants - “Di” means “Two” - so you need two separate plants for pollination
13:10 Dioecious Plants include Asparagus, Spinach, Yam, Kiwifruit, Papaya, Date Fruit, Willow Trees, Mistletoe, and Poplar Trees
    13:27 Self-Pollination
13:30 Tomato Plant as example of Self-Pollination
    13:50 Tomato Blossom
13:57 Staminal Cone - Stamens stuck together in cone shape
14:58 Cutaway of Staminal Cone reveals the Pistil
15:12 The Stigma, the Style, the Ovary, the Ovules
15:37 Movement of the Pollen Grains
16:12 Self-Pollinators might not be able to pollinate themselves, so they need movement
16:30 The Wind can help a Self-Pollinating flower to move
16:34 A Pollinator, such as a bee, can help it move, from the flapping of its wings
16:52 A Hand can shake the flower for movement of the Staminal Cone
16:58 A Soft Brush can be used to brush the pollen up onto the Stigma as well
17:18 Examples of Self-Pollinating Flowers - typically plants with smaller flowers
17:27 Peanuts, Apricots, Tomatoes, Wheat, Rice, Oats, Beans, Lettuce, Peas, Corn, Stella and Compact Stella Cherry Trees, Peach Trees
18:00 Annual Flowers are often Self-Pollinating because of their short lifespans
18:15 Zinnias, Cosmos, Larkspur, most Marigolds, most Sunflowers, Geraniums, Cornflowers, Begonias, Petunias, Nasturtiums, Snapdragons, and Alyssums
18:37 Examples of Cross-Pollinating Flowers - Carrots, Onion, Garlic, Cauliflower, most Cherry Trees, most Pear Trees
