      I had several uti because i did not have enough time to go the restroom or drink water. My colleagues gave meds in 30 min. I used 2-3 hours to do it, nebulize, change foleys as ordered (i used to find foleys without date, so they are placed ? months for nurses fixed to that side of floor not need to change). I was floating. When i shifted to their side (they saod 30 min for med), it was the same 2-3 hours average. So i conclude that they skip giving meds or procedures to certain patients.

      oh so many, i was a psych nurse for 30 years and it is funny when psych nurses get together we love to tell each other our horror stories, but we think they are funny and we laugh while others around us who don not work in the field just look at us as if we are crazy. I want to be a nurse but I'm shy and have some social anxiety. Can a shy person be a good nurse?

    • @keamber.vaughn
      @keamber.vaughn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      +Autumn Norberg absolutely you can! I'm not a "shy" person per se but I'm a complete introvert and I'm still able to be a really great nurse despite that. When you're passionate about something, you'll naturally come out of your shell!

    • @nataliesawyer1029
      @nataliesawyer1029 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      A lot of nursing is “listening” to patients, so you may even have an advantage. Also, shyness & social anxiety can be overcome with experience. The best learning happens when you push yourself out of your comfort zone. I’m currently in nursing school and it seems that everything I do or have to do is out of my comfort zone (especially during a pandemic), but that’s part of learning and growing. The more you do things the more comfortable you get. Don’t let your fears stop you from reaching your dreams. For example, a part of me is terrified to be a nurse, but I’m more terrified of not becoming a nurse and all my hard work be for nothing. To reiterate, your shyness is nothing to be afraid of. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and many times our perceived weaknesses are actually strengths, or can be used to our advantage. 😉😘

    I’m a psych nurse and I love your video. My job is slightly different. It’s a small 18 bed unit in a small hosp. We have psych techs to do vitals and there are two nurse so we split the patient equally. I agree what you said about keeping hydrated! I’m just recovering from UTI and kidney stones....I need to do better. I love my job and I can’t stand when people say “I don’t know how you do it”. Like, hello, it’s all nursing! Them dementia patients on med surg ain’t no different! When I was in med surg I noticed that most patients had psych issues, they were just on med surg because they are sick.....I’m over med surg and now I say “I don’t know how you do it” to the med surg nurses....lol!

      +NurseJackie Oh no!! I used to get UTIs REALLY bad in neuro. The pushing/pulling of patients made my back fall further out of alignment and it was compressing the nerves to my bladder smh. After a few years of adjustments at a chiro I don't have the issue anymore THANK GOODNESS. And yeah I TOTALLY feel you. People who work in even higher acuity are silly to ask how we do it like chile most of the time it's not NEARLY as bad as what yall have to deal with lol. IV's beeping all night. Bed alarms going off all night. Pain meds around the clock etc. Yeah...naw I'm good. Been there DONE THAT and won't no mo lol

      I’m glad you posted this because I was wondering if psych was a little better than Med surg. I did a med surg floor briefly but didn’t really care for it. It was a lot going on and you’re right you get psych patients there as well. And I was like I didn’t know I signed up for this cause we had a lot of people with mental health issues. Plus you have to deal with that on top of everything else they got going on was a lot. I’ve been considering trying psych out.

    You are right about the 15 minutes when nurses are peeking in the rooms, I was in a psych ward for 5 and 1/2 weeks. I’m a lite sleeper and I have insomnia so it really doesn’t help. I’m a veteran so I was in the psych ward at the VA. Some of the nurses there were horrible, they would be in the halls loud and laughing while we were trying to sleep. It was a lot of hoopla going on.

    • @keamber.vaughn
      @keamber.vaughn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +MY BLESSING It's annoying when staff are loud in the hallways especially at night! Thankfully at my job in my home town the rounds are every 30 mins and staff stay at the nurses station and off the pods where clients are sleeping.

    Not a nurse, but a mental health specialist at a psychiatric hospital. And yes I too have stories for days. Literally every single shift, I could write a novel on all of the wild times we be having on the unit. At this point though, after 6 months working there, a lot of the crazy stuff that happens seems so normal to me.
    I barely bat an eye anymore when someone starts telling me that they see things or hear voices.

    My experience with psych nurses has been pretty negative. Psych wards have always been so cold, and the atmosphere has made me quite sad. A lot of it is lack of specialized training, throwing traditionally trained nurses in to psych wards, and giving them minimal training, just because the special training isn’t as available. This also leads to understaffing so nurses really don’t have the energy to be compassionate and friendly. Keep in mind this is just my experience from visiting friends and family, and things I’ve heard from psych nurse friends.

    • @keamber.vaughn
      @keamber.vaughn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I can agree with that. You really have to have a special passion for psych to be a great psych nurse. I find that some of the best psych nurses have had their own bouts with non-psychosis psych diagnoses like depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, etc.

    Current nursing student here! First thing I wanna say, I LOVE how organized you are. Your organization just motivated me.
    I'm currently in a psych rotation at a long term facility & I love it. I'm so intrigued by the patients I encounter , especially the ones with a criminal background. I think the only thing preventing me from being a psych nurse is the VERY UNPREDICTABLE violence in a facility like the one I do my clinicals in 😩
    Thanks for the video!

      @keamber.vaughn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Rebecca H thank you so much!! Congrats on your success in nursing school thus far and good luck as you finish it on out!! Honestly I would say remember that you run the risk of violence in ANY area of nursing...it's just in this area you are AWARE of the risk. While some (mainly long term) or extremely acute clients can be a risk to your safety for the most part, you have nothing to worry about. I've yet to be put in harms way after almost 3 years (knocks on wood)

But I mainly like it because I'm not the biggest fan of Western Medicine and too often in MedSurg I felt like a pill pusher. Now don't get me wrong psych patients can have A LOT of meds (mainly mental health patients NOT behavioral health, there's a difference)...but psych I feel like it's a better opportunity to provide therapeutic care, which for most psych patients that's all they desire. Only way I would get back into med/surg is in childrens .

      Rileigh Madison hey girl! I’m a psych nurse. I would definitely say learn how to prioritize & how to study! Nursing school is hard & very intense. I would also suggest looking into programs in your area. You can go the associates or the bachelors degree route, both have their benefits. I graduated with my associates & worked for my bachelors while working as a nurse. You can also get a job as a mental health technician if you like. Where I work, we don’t require much experience because we train on site. Mental health techs usually spend a lot of time with patients & work closely with the nurses so it will give you a real feel for what it’s like the be a psych RN. A lot of people talk down on psych nurses but it can be extremely rewarding. However is can also be mentally taxing & is definitely not for everyone. Good luck to you!

    I just wanted to say that this video did help me quite a bit. I have been interested in working psych since before I started nursing school. Currently I am about to graduate and that brings me to a question.. how do you leave your work related stress there and not bring too much home? I ask because I work as a tech on a BHU and still haven't quite figured that out yet lol.

    • @keamber.vaughn
      @keamber.vaughn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Richard Hutchins early congrats to you on your upcoming graduation!! It's really hard to answer that question as, tbh, any work related stress typically comes from my coworkers not the patients/clients LOL. But also I think the fact that I've gone through depression/anxiety/panic attacks since I was 10 it helps me have a certain level of sympathy and empathy for the acute psych patients who are there for those things (and suicidal ideation or attempts). Drug/alcohol detox are KINDA hard for me to empathize with sometimes cause it's like dude YOU decided to drink or do drugs lol. But I would say being thankful that you are not them...that you don't have schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or whatever other kind of patients you deal with should be enough to help you "leave it there". Like hey you get to go home "whole" and at peace ya kno?

So, I'll be unemployed sometime in the first quarter of 2020. I have the opportunity to enroll in college and all of my education expenses will be paid by the government. I do 12 1/2 hour night shifts at a crisis center. We do substance abuse, mental health, and dual diagnosis clients. Crisis stay is 3-5 days, and recovery is a 28 day program. The dual diagnosis clients usually start on crisis and transfer to the 28 day recovery program. I LOVE my job. Especially being dual diagnosed myself I get to really help those who are where I used to be. Maybe not as bad, and maybe worse, but we’re all in it together and work towards the same goal. It’s not always the easiest of jobs, and is def NOT for everyone, but for those of us that feel like it was made for us to do, it’s almost not fair we’re getting paid to do it.

    Those nurse preceptors for students during their psychiatric clinical, the below information has been sent out to most student nurse sites I could find. I wanted you to have the information as well so it does not come as a surprise if this issue is raised, as I hope it will be by some of them.
    Nursing students, hello. I loved my career in trauma nursing for 25 years. I hope you too, will get much satisfaction in caring for your patients, for advocating for them, even if it is unpopular. It will take courage to stand up for your vulnerable patients when going against an entrenched system at times, where profits outweigh harm to a patient.
    I lost my career after consenting to the mental health procedure ECT/ Electroshock. I sustained repeated acquired traumatic brain injuries that result from this practice. I was too drugged, to the point I settled a psychiatric medical malpractice suit, when I was consented. I could not draw on my expertise given this.
    You will be doing a psychiatric clinical. You may witness the procedure called ECT. There has never been any testing by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. Based on my experience around ECT as a patient and a former trauma nurse I created a website called ectjustice.net that I hope you will check out. My initial site ectjustice.com is still active but is now owned by the firms involved in a suit around ECT. There is another site called Mad in America and if you plug in electroshock in the search bar it will pull up many great articles.
    When you see the truth of this practice my hope is you will have discussions, write papers, question this practice perhaps as a clinical group, because who wants to be singled out when a student? Your care plans may include alternatives to ECT or referrals into traumatic brain injury programs as part of your discharge planning.
    Your professors, have been indoctrinated to accept this practice for the most part, and may question your plan of care. You can let your professor have your known resources and point out that the CA courts have at a minimum, proved brain injury outcomes at a minimum in a suit that is ongoing.
    Much success to you all. ADVOCATE. My gratitude.

You can always take advanced psych classes "just because" if you want to, but taking all the classes for an associates is pointless I promise.
      It only took me 4.5 years. It would've just taken the typical 8 semesters, but my first college was an accelerated college so we didn't have labs for Anatomy & Physiology which the lab was required so I had to retake A&P I & II to meet the lab requirements.

      +flower Girl I don't mind the codes because the code teams can be anywhere and need to be sure it is heard by them. Although float nurses tell us time and time again that our intercom in our unit is louder than anywhere else...which is dumb because psych and ICU should have it the lowest. Can't tell you how many PRN Klonopins and Ativans I have to give because the psychotic patients and the patients with bad anxiety wake up with panic attacks because of how loud the intercom is smh. The lullabye mess is just plain dumb. I'm sorry. The hospital is a place where people are trying to heal and part of healing is rest which is impossible when lullabyes are going off all night. That's the most popular unit in this hospital which makes it worse.

Once you are of age to work, try getting a job on a psych unit as a psych tech or cna (they are called different things depending on the type of facility) and you will know pretty quickly if that's the area you like or not :)

      Oh wow it's so different here in Ireland - the nursing college courses are specialised straight away: mental health, intellectual disability, general or children's + general integrated. And you spend your 4 years of college (4.5 for children's + general integrated) studying the one you've chosen. In psych you do have to do one general placement and vice versa.

    Yesss soo inspiring.. I just passed my NCLEX-RN last week and I’ve been working in psych as a tech for 5 yrs. I am currently looking for a psych nurse job... watching your video is sooooo motivating.

      +Pana_Montana RN omg congrats!! :) There are usually a high number of psych nurse openings because that's one of the least popular fields. It's just a matter of what type of facility you want to work in, what area of psych, and what pay you're looking for. Just remember psych can also be one of the lowest paying. Which sucks lol

    So what exactly is required to be a psych nurse? Like in detail💛

      Just get a nursing degree and get a job in psych lol. Some psych facilities (mainly acute) require the national CPI training, but mine didn't/doesn't. Other than that, that's it.
