I'm a retired operating engineer 65 yrs old and the 862's we had were the best self loading scraper around!, the cat 615's were dogs!. Its a shame they quit building them!.
I worked for a small excavation contractor in the 1970's. This was a very handy machine to own. One operator left alone, could accomplish a lot in a day.
God, I have own so many of those screaming 860, 860a Jimmy's... Detroit 6-71 straight-six, rebuild every 2-3 years. I sold one once to my buddy, he said it leaked so much oil everywhere it was even coming out the headlights.
@@Offroader451-rm5jz Good point, but I did many 12 hour shifts on 2 stroke machines, maybe coz I havent done it for years I recall never getting tired of it :):):),
The narrator must have been busy in his career because every single documentary from the mid century 1990s has the same exact sounding dude narrating their films
Yes. They all quit working for NASA to build earth moving equipment. It was a challenge, both in their wallet and mind but they produced a noisy, too little pos.
860 was pretty good, but the 762 and 862 were better because of a few key changes, like converter lockup, and shifting a bit more weight onto the powered axle.
Lewie McNeely I believe they eventually converted to Deere engines in the later model years. I have a brochure in a box that in the shop, I’ll have to look tomorrow. I don’t recall what 860 letter series is in that brochure.
I've run both, cat is gutless compared to Deere. I tried to kill one I've 5 year period and I couldn't do it. Cat on the other hand is better visibility and don't steer good at all.
I still have. My 1970 860 runs and works great

IF THERE AINT OIL UNDER IT THERE AINT OIL IN IT lol.
I never checked the oil in any Detroit I ran,, I just added a gallon everyday.
He wasn't a very good mechanic. Our detroits didn't leak oil. That was our bosses pet peeve.
Glad theres a windshield wiper on an open cab.
have a 860A since 1974 and it still works, have 3 862B and do a lot of work with them
The other driver comfort device was a pair of earmuffs 😂
This is why all of our dads or grandpas are deaf
I can remember seeing these when I was young I'm seeing born with two engines on it in a push-pull configuration
Deere never had a twin engine model!
The 6-71 Detroit used in this thing sounds like that used in the old Crown school buses I rode on field trips as a kid. Sick! 👍👍👍
Never seen one of those seats work before.. man I am lucky.
Is it me or the cab's design really looks modern?
Because it is....
Love the music to this; reminds me of the music Sam Spence composed for NFL films.
modern and beautiful
Love the 2 stroke sound :)
Unless it was right beside you for 8-10 hours

@@vicbittertoo Back then we thought nothing of it.
@@Offroader451-rm5jz spot on champ, "you want ear plugs ?, are you some sort of homo???", was the general attitude :):), cheers

That Detroit engine always sounds like it’s about to explode ☠️
2-stroke Detroit for you 😁
Sounded like a Screamin Detroit Diesel! Used to drive a EUC IN a steel mill that had one! Needed ear plugs lol
Did anyone else notice that the cab with the mannequin inside (the one that rolled) was enclosed, while all of the other cabs were open?
Actually all but the one which was rolled didn't have cabs lol
3:55 "the unqualified reputation of John Deere engineering"?
Its probably because of that wide open view of impending doom in the forms of flying rocks and shattering blades.
Yes. They all quit working for NASA to build earth moving equipment. It was a challenge, both in their wallet and mind but they produced a noisy, too little pos.
Sounds like a woodstock hippy a full heaped bowl every time
😄👏
6:56 for sale: prototype model, never used slightly beat on.
ooooo foam cushion seat boys hold on its gona be rough
I remember those hard working machines, no hearing protection required.
860 was pretty good, but the 762 and 862 were better because of a few key changes, like converter lockup, and shifting a bit more weight onto the powered axle.
If the elevator chain would turn that fast on a cat it would be bad ass
I think the soundtrack was written by NFL Films?
رائع جدا انا احب معدات جوندير كثيرا واعشقها انها
معدات رائعة👌👍👍👍
Good video but even though it was a Deere it was sure running a G.M. Detroit 2-cycle diesel! Probably a 4-71.
The 860A had a 6-71N.
@@timberanek45 Plenty of power then.

@@timberanek45 Seems like the one I saw had a Deere engine. It sure wasn't a 2-cycle. NOBODY forgets one of those!
@@lewiemcneely9143 milk....
'Plush' he says.
I didn't know this was powered by a 6-71 detroit motor..
We always cut them up and turned them into water wagons
nice . JD used a GMC two stroke?
For a very long time.
They didn't have an engine that big back then. They used Detroits in tractors as well.
I didnt know John Deere's ran Detroit diesels
Did the mannequin survive?
Looks like he ejected.....
I don't know, but it's funny they show the roll over test with a ROPS cab, then immediately cut to a scene of a live operator in an open cab, lol.
Yeah, I think the cab is only supposed to be rated for one revolution, not 3 or 4...a bit of overkill here
1:00 Thunderbirds ordered a fleet of these for international rescue
I think I'll have a CAT 🙀
He said 215 hp which sounds to me like a 6-71.
6-71N
Exactly. Deere had nothing close to that power at the time.
Then God made rocks...
Oh the noise...oy vey
Nice machine s
671N Gmc
No roll cage?
This was before OSHA.
Jump and roll days
That was in the days when men had balls big enough to hold them in the seat, even upside down.
3:53 Unqualified? Umm 🤔
I reckon the 760A is better, pretty much same scraper bowl without the screaming Detroit engine!
Smaller bowl, smaller engine
7:14 HEY,,, where´s the driver at ?!
John deere needs to stay with farming.
Detroit engine?
6-71N motor, yes
It looks ugly cat is better

CAT sucks overrated manufacturer
Take the cat
