Ive been using the new bg's on the charter boat i run for over a year now in the gulf and have not had one issue yet! Everything from grouper to kingfish, aj's, snapper, sharks, ect... i even bought one for myself because i was soo impressed!
I have a BG 4500 for last 4 years. Love it. I recently landed a 6’ blacktip with it. Wasn’t worried about the drag at all. More worried about the leader! Lately I wanted a bigger reel and got the BG 5000 and now I have a couple great beach surf reels and I am very happy. My wife is happy because the 4500 is now her go to and we scrapped her old cheap Walmart reel and she loves the SMOOTH action on the 4500.
For the pasted 10 years I've owned and have been surf fishing using Penn reels and had nothing but problems with them and they're not smooth NIB or otherwise. I recently purchased a new BG 4000 and I'm blown away by what a pleasure it is to fish with this reel !! I can't believe how smooth and effortless the retrieve is on this reel and the gears are as smooth as glass. Yes ! The Daiwa BG IS DURABLE AND SIMPLISTIC & MAINTAINABLE !!!!!!!! I viewed the mechanical breakdown of this BG reel on Tackle Advisors the pinon gear is seated and reinforced with a ball bearing inside the housing of the reel & the crosswind gear is seated and reinforced on a ball bearing and the gears are reinforced two with stabilizer bars, no other reel company puts a reel out there like this for such a low price as the BG. Don't be fooled by the price tag because as inexpensive as this reel is Daiwa didn't cut any corners building these BG reels and they're not a cheaply designed product, this reel could have easily been three times the price that Daiwa is asking for, and no reel company on the market can sell a reel like this with such a low price tag attached to it ! This new Daiwa BG spinning reel a quality mechanically crafted marvel. My next two reels will be the BG 5000 & 4500 reels when I fish the ocean on the surf this fall.
I got the Black Gold 4500 because of the twin anti reverse. It's smooth. You get plastic body if you buy Shimano of the same price and single anti reverse bearing can get destroy by big fish. The old BG is a cult favourite. But wobble. The famous copy is Banax SX( Korean made ) series. Very good detail. Better than Shimano. Cannot better than Daiwa, coz it's a Dauwa BG copy. A cult favourite too. So robust that almost every fishermen in Malaysia have them !!!
I totally agree: It`s an absolutely awesome reel. Considering the pricepoint on one hand and the value in quality and durability you get on the other hand it`s just incredible.
Nothing against the reel, I love mine with a passion, but I wouldn’t recommend people treating it like a Van Staal. It doesn’t have corrosion resistant bearings in it and it doesn’t have Daiwa’s seals like a Saltist so if you do dunk it and reel it underwater like that I highly highly recommend taking it apart, spraying some solvent in there to clean it out, and adding new grease and oil. It’s just not designed to be dunked like that so I hope people don’t think it’ll last very long if treated like a fully sealed reel!
Daiwa is best. I have had my 7000C since the 80's. Works perfect. I have all different brands but the Daiwa's last the longest and the drag is always smooth year after year.
I'm very happy with mine, I ordered a 6500 and sent it back as it was more like an 8000 size compared to other manufacturers. I got a 4500 and it is much better for the rod I got it for. I can also recommend the Fin Nor Lethal spinning series.
dirtychampagnepapi I do saltwater land based, I got a Penn prevail 10 foot 15-30lb, I'll be using 30lb sunline clear mono, braid isn't friendly around rocks
I can't decide if I want at 4500 or 5000. I plan on doing pier, surf, jetties, and also boat/charters once in a while. Do u think a 4500 can handle a medium size tuna?
The Japanese Shimano models (Stradic SW - 2018) are by far the best reels in my opinion but bang for the buck, the BG is where its at. Personally, I kayak fish and all of my reels are always getting blasted by surf. Both these reels have stood up well with a simple freshwater wash from the get go.
I have been using my trusty BG 60 since the mid 80's and it has never let me down. I now have two spare spools with different line classes depending on what I am fishing for. For me the only issue was a line holder so, on one spool I have drilled a small hole in the lip and on the others I have a 1/2" piece of elastic cloth that I have sown. Very interested is seeing these new reels in the flesh.
On a tackle Tuesday maybe you could show the after fishing process of cleaning and storing rods and reels and talk about and show maintenance like oiling and things for those of us that are not quite so experienced.
BG was around before 80...I had a BG mini might....4 lb test....landed a 7 lb Steelhead when I was a kid...I loved that set up.... anybody remember those.... Diawa and Penn fill my tackle box! Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School
Excellent review, I have friends that I surf fish with and have no complaint about this new BG reel and for the price you can't go wrong. I've read comments in response to your review relating to the Penn Battle series reels that have grinding gears and failed after catching one fish. I caught over 50 Bluefish in one outing alone in less than 2 hrs and probably caught over 1000 Bluefish this past spring run and all these fish ran BTWN 12 and 20 LBS each using plugs and tins off the surf using my Conflict 5000 that has the same gears as the Battle II and I've hard fished the Battle series reels for the past 5 years and the only problem with the Penn Battle and V reels are that the gears are made of die cast aluminum and they lose there smoothness in a shot period of time of use but they never failed me yet. My friend that I fished with all spring long was using his Penn Sargus 6000 on different outings the same reel that I saw him land a 50 pound bass snagging bunker off the beach in Jun of 2011, he also uses an old model BG that's indestructible from time to time using mono on it and he has the new 5000 BG model loaded with 17 LB Nanofil and from my observation the BG reels are great. I'm tempted to purchases a new BG but I have enough fishing gear and I can't fish them all at once. {Great Product Review ! }
dirtychampagnepapi. I paired it with a 7ft Bass Pro Shop inshore Gold Cup rod. Lined it with 30lbs Spiderwire. I do a lot of pier fishing for Spanish, Kings, Bonita, and whatever else bites.
Alan hawk reviewed the bg and said it was fantastic.he stripped it down, like all the reels he review said it has quality parts and is comparable to much more expensive reels.much better than penns in the same price range.it was the best reel in its class, easily.
Great video. I'm not looking for a new reel but very good insight and you made a great point about charter captains cause they are working on not very high salaries so they need the best quality gear for affordable prices in glad you mentioned that. Keep up the great work.
DYING to try the Daiwa BG. I have 2 Penn Battles, a Fin Nor 9500 offshore, 2 Penn Fierce, a Penn 550ss a Penn Sargus for my spinners but the BG is next
@@Nofishnoclue thats just not true, the gears in the spinfisher are made from better materials and cnc'd one at a time. in addition to being sealed, its an all around better reel. BG is still amazing at the price point
@@ianundercover6295 although the gear material is of a higher quality in the spinfisher the daiwa bgs gear is much larger for similar sized reels resulting in a much smoother experience with more cranking power at the anglers disposal, I own a spin Fisher vi among many other Penn reels and the spinfisher is one of the better ones, but honestly I think the bg is better for general use, the Penn has its place, but like I said the penns are overrated, Americans treat slammers and spinfishers like gold when really the are just quality reels, with issues of there own

Really a fantastic review and you make some important points about how much performance you can get at a reasonable price. Cheers!
I like these reels. They are truly one of the best. I also like the Penn Battle equally, as well. Have both in 6000 series. I really also like the Penn Spinfishers, and the Pflueger Presidents, but there have gone up dramatically in price in recent years.
I do a lot of surf fishing here on the treasure coast of Florida using Shimano reels even though I rinse after every trip and clean good the bearings freeze up I just send the reels back to Shimano and pay $25 service fee and they send me a new reel normally an upgrade seldom do they repair it they have a great service department but it takes about 4 weeks to get a reel back. Twice I tried to take a part spinning reels but I couldn't put them back due to my hands not being able to handle the tiny screws I sent them back in a baggee they sent me new reels. That's service.
You are not a normal fisherman. You are a very serious fisherman. Look at your house, just like a fishing tackle shop! Very well laid. Are you a professional fisherman as a living? Your videos are great. Hope to fish with you one day in Singapore.
I just got the BG 4500 . My question is , do you need to unscrew the screw to switch the handles on the opposite side once the handle is off ? Thanks in advance. I turn my handle with my right hand
Great review! I love my BG. I was just comparing it to my Penn Battle II reel. Both of them perform well, and are in the same price range. I was hung up on which reel to buy next, but I think I'm going to order another BG from Amazon.
The new BG reels are great. They are smoother than the old ones, and have instant anti-reverse unlike the old ones. However, I would have to recommend the BG Classics(they still sell them, between $99 and $150) if you do much inshore/beach/deep water fishing. I love instant anti-reverse. It makes hook sets better, is smoother and has less chance of a line snapping because of handle slap. That has actually never happened to me but I have heard people say it happened to them. That said, instant anti-reverse really hates saltwater, sand and grit. The roller bearing that makes anti-reverse work is extremely delicate and has no tolerance to any debris being introduced to it. Also, once it does get grit/sand/salt in it, it will never be as tight again. It will work, and it will still feel good, but it will not be as good as it was. The old BG Classic can be used under water, not be cleaned and work for the next 20 years. The only failure that one of my BG Classics had was an anti-reverse spring rust. That reel was 20 years old. A new spring, and its back to new. I personally would spend the extra few bucks on the BG Classic if long term reliability in saltwater is what you are after. One reel that has surprised and blown me away is my little Pfleuger President ultralight. I have now had it for a decade, used it everywhere from Pensacola(it was able to handle a 6lb sheephead from a pier) to Savannah(hundreds of trout) to the Tennessee River(last week, a dozen or so 4-6lb catfish in the current) and have never even opened it up. It has gone through 3 rods, because I way over stress them with the size fish I use it for, and ran nothing but braid since it was new. It was dunked under saltwater in Pensacola when I fell off of the walkway of the bridge and was dropped in a harbor in Savannah when I let a little boy reel in a croaker with it. I actually have a few videos on here of me using it about a decade ago catching 20+lb catfish from our pond. That is a reel that I will never let go.
Get the BG4500 . It got two antireverse ! That's why I bought it. Go for BANAX SX series. Made in Korea. It's an old Daiwa BG copy. Super high quality. Very Cheap. V robust. I got mine and it's 40 years old now. Still working. Build like a tank ! A cult favourite in Malaysia and the world. Everyone have one ! It's a beast !!! Ryobi Applause/ Vertigo /Excusima same spool size different quantity bearings. Very good. Most copied reels because it's simple ,strong and rugged but not as smooth as Shimano. I got 4 of them
I fish for minnows with a shimano stella 10000 paired with a Phenix Black diamond rod and 100 pound braid. For my shark setup i use a zebco dock demon with 8 pound mono.
these are awesome reels I have three of them. super good price for a super good real. amazing drag. purchased all three off of Amazon about 6 months ago. I was waiting on this review glad you posted
Nice vid, I just bought a Stradic ci4+ for a trip down to S.C(from Boston) for redfish, I already own a penn battle 2(4000) for light schoolie striper fishing in Maine. In your opinion should I take the Stradic back and pick up a BG and have money left over for another reel of my choice, or stick with the Stradic because it’s worth it?
I still fish with my 1976 Daiwa Silver Series 7000C and love it. The BG came after the silver series and the only substantive difference to me between the silver and the early BG is the color. I have been interested in the new Tsunami reels with all the seals but between your review and Tackle Adviser’s I’m leaning toward the BG. By the way I also use a RG 5000 Daiwa that still fishes very well. My best Daiwa is an Emblem X 5500T long-cast reel since I am a surf fisherman. Most of the reels I fish with are vintage being 45 yrs. old or older. Anyway, thanks for this. Fist tackle video I’ve seen of yours. Love your enthusiasm!
Thinking of either getting the diawa bg 8000/ fin nor 9500a/ or penn slammer 3 8500hs. The penn is kinda of pricey but the other too are just over 100 bucks. Mainly using for a big live bait setup so mainly focusing on line capacity and drag as this will mainly be used for free lineing out baits not casting. Was going to use 65 lbs braid. Please any comments or suggestions will help thanks!
Looking to purchase a new rod and reel combo I'm just starting to saltwater fish. Would you suggest the Saratoga 10k or the Diawa BG 8k because I haven't seen a 10k? And can you suggest a nice rod as well
www.alanhawk.com/reviews/bg16.html Alan Hawk gave the Daiwa BG his best review, which is rare for him to give a price point reel such a good review. Daiwa has yet again out done themselves.
cheers mate just brought a 8000 dam looking forward to using it soon for GT Kings and after the review it should hold up well compared to my PENN SLAMMER 3 10500
Nasci is smooth but weak pulling power. Go for the new Black Gold. It will be the new legend. That's why it was voted one of the best reel in the world. But not Nasci
Thanks for the review man! I'm new to this saltwater fishing. Been looking for a new reel. Was between this and a spinfisher. Only fished from piers. Ready to go down to the surf for bigger sharks and whatever else I can hook into. Can you do a video on what is the best type of braid and rod for this reel?
I would like to know what is the difference between the BG and the Saltist? They both have the same performance. The only difference that I can see on paper is ball bearings, but the Saltist is quite a bit more expensive. Based on the 4500 size, the BG goes for $120 while the Saltist goes for $230.
I use the BG6500 for monster catfish on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and they haven't let me down yet.
I've been researching so many reels. And you have just completely convinced me on this reel. Thanks for the video!
First time on this channel. This guy is great. He is knowledgeable, concise, and enthusiastic. One of the best fishing channels I've come across!

For a Vs yes but youCan buy 8 or 9 of these for the price of one van staal. Have fun and use the darn reel and fish baby. No need to baby it
I was catching red grouper and red snapper with my 5000 yesterday. Love these reels.
I was looking at a bg5000 today. I think I'll buy it.
I got this one.
But the best is the BG MAGSEALED !
Sold out in my country !
Got my BG 4500 with my two piece Tica Surf Rod............my absolute favorite combo! Next up Penn Rampage Rod/BG 5000. Fuego for under 200. 🔥🔥
I just picked this reel up. Can't wait to try it out!
Daiwa is best. I have had my 7000C since the 80's. Works perfect. I have all different brands but the Daiwa's last the longest and the drag is always smooth year after year.
Thank you for helping make my decision. Ordered a BG 5000 today
Is it a good reel? Thinking about getting the 6500
I'm very happy with mine, I ordered a 6500 and sent it back as it was more like an 8000 size compared to other manufacturers. I got a 4500 and it is much better for the rod I got it for. I can also recommend the Fin Nor Lethal spinning series.
What kind of rod set up did you get for this BG 4500? and also what type of fishing do you do?
dirtychampagnepapi I do saltwater land based, I got a Penn prevail 10 foot 15-30lb, I'll be using 30lb sunline clear mono, braid isn't friendly around rocks

dirtychampagnepapi I would go for the 5000, it won't be much bigger but have more line capacity, it would handle them no problems
Im using the same reel with a Daiwa Coastal salt pro surf rod 10'6
It works great for me the last 2years catching them by the hundreds Was really impress

After watching most of ur videos and how much you use this reel, it convinced me to get one. Thanks for the recommendation on a awesome reel.
Really appreciate your thoughtful, objective, data-based review!
You should do a rod and reel arsenal
Jonathan Nguyen I agree
he already has
I have the 3000 and it's a BEAST!!!!
What is biggest u catch with that 3000 size i have it to !
Caught Monster sting rays ..handle really good with the drag system

The daiwa samurai is one of the best affordable combos for 30 bucks, i got the freshwater versions, best cheap ones I've found.
Was looking into this reel and this review really helped. Thanks Victor!
Awesome to hear!
Very nice reel. Equally nice review Vic! Great job!
I still own a BG 20, a BG 30 and BG 90 Awesome reels, they just dont quit if you clean them from time to time.
Got mine off walmart online, DAIWA BG 4000 @ $90, cheaper than amazon
Good review. First use of BG8000 this morning. First manual bail I've ever had, you get used to it. Robust. Great to use.

dude, like legit i just got the older bg90 sunday and it is so freaking smooth and its a very strong reel
Great review can't go wrong with the BG
Nice fishing room.
My experience is it's an excellent reel and excellent value

Its a kind of reel i've been after.
3 of the best reels for the price to me is #1 Diawa BG. #2 Pfluger President. #3 The most over looked the Mitchell 300.
I am not a saltwater guy, but I ordered the BG3500 because I liked everything about it...
Automatic toornament drag is one of the best gift from daiwaBG.
I have the magsealed version and it's amazing how such a budget reel pack a punch.

The threads on this reel are very very delicate. Do not over tighten any of the screws.
I have a thirty-year-old bg60 that is almost like new I used it for ocean fishing
Enjoyed it...Mahalo and Aloha from the Big Isle"🤙"
Nice vid bro i might actually grab one of those reels
I got 4 of them
I have the 2000 bg it's a beast I have caught so many big fish on it
I fish for minnows with a shimano stella 10000 paired with a Phenix Black diamond rod and 100 pound braid. For my shark setup i use a zebco dock demon with 8 pound mono.
can you recommend the right size reel for king fishing from a pier, and possibly an affordable rod/rod size/action?
these are awesome reels I have three of them. super good price for a super good real. amazing drag. purchased all three off of Amazon about 6 months ago.
6atlantis what did you do? Keep the Stradic or return for a BG?
love tackle Tuesday
Do you think a BG 8000 would be enough for 7 to 8ft sharks in the surf.
brandon meadows of course
I just ordered the Daiwa BG4500 BG Saltwater Spinning Reel, can you tell me roughly how much (20 lb braided line) it will hold on the spool?
I have that one but the penn battle 2 is a beast !
BG better. I own 3 of each!
What would you recommend for Tarpon and big snooks, the 4000 or 5000? Thinking about pairing with a shimano teramar 8ft H or XH
And can you suggest a nice rod as well
Just got one for my Birthday .. question is the automatic to flip back or Manuel
What rod would you recommend for the 8000bg reel
Hi my name Gabriel I have a Diwa BG 8000 whit 80lb braid what fishing rods I can used offshore fishing
www.alanhawk.com/reviews/bg16.html Alan Hawk gave the Daiwa BG his best review, which is rare for him to give a price point reel such a good review. Daiwa has yet again out done themselves.
Used the daiwa bg 5000 my opinion is that its buttery and I love it so much but I just don't like the knob any ideas on how to change it tho
@@jackchn23 ayee thanks man appreciate it cheers to you
cheers mate just brought a 8000 dam looking forward to using it soon for GT Kings and after the review it should hold up well compared to my PENN SLAMMER 3 10500
how does it compare to your penn slammer?
Victor what you think between the 3000bg vs the shimano nasci
The-squad the BG2500 is more comparable in size to the nasci3000; go with the BG
ichor20 yes i finally go with the bg
Nasci is smooth but weak pulling power. Go for the new Black Gold. It will be the new legend. That's why it was voted one of the best reel in the world. But not Nasci
What rod would u recommend with that reel for bluefish or striped bass?
I’m using 10’6 daiwa coastal salt pro medium 1-4 oz casting weight
Thanks for the review man! I'm new to this saltwater fishing. Been looking for a new reel. Was between this and a spinfisher. Only fished from piers. Ready to go down to the surf for bigger sharks and whatever else I can hook into. Can you do a video on what is the best type of braid and rod for this reel?
Would a 4000 work for king fish? Maybe with braid backing
Steve yes
I would like to know what is the difference between the BG and the Saltist? They both have the same performance. The only difference that I can see on paper is ball bearings, but the Saltist is quite a bit more expensive. Based on the 4500 size, the BG goes for $120 while the Saltist goes for $230.
good video keep up the good work
