I just watched Last Action Hero for the first time to validate this, and you are in fact objectively correct.

Predator: Two great tastes that taste great together.
Having recently revisited The Raid, I think horror is often a useful ingredient to give an action movie some extra edge and suspense. A friend legitimately freaked out at the cupboard scene when I first watched it.

This essentially perfectly describes why I love this movie. Patrick also nails exactly why the last two Predator movies fell flat. This series has a basic formula: Take a genre and add a Predator. Predators was just a loose remake of the first movie and The Predator is too much ABOUT the Predator and tried to build up a larger universe. It is the easiest and most interesting formula but for some reason 20th Century Fox couldn't see it had absolutely no idea what to do with the property.
Where's my western meets Predator movie? Where my pirate movie meets Predator? Seriously this franchise can capitalize on any type of genre thats popular at any point in ime and they just waste it.
I want a romcom with a Predator.

I like the idea that the predator targets only people who commit violence: Those who take pleasure in violent delights, become delights of violence.

Yeah because the concept of The Predator has always been going after the challenging prey, to prove themselves, all the guys they kill before is to see who will be the final girl and strongest adversary.

"Predator" is even bigger & better than Patrick's praise - it's THREE types of films into one perfect distillation of action in movie form:
1) The Kickass "Team On a Mission" Movie: An uber-competent team of great characters each with unique skills on a mission against a whole force of people. The threat is a large group - how will they pull their skills together into a plan to *methodically kill the group*?
2) The Kickass Slasher Movie: Just like how Patrick elaborated, now the movie pivots, but notably not only is it the team now getting methodically killed, but it's the team against *a single threat* (it's a tribute to the movie's filmmaking that it never occurs to the audience there's a chance there would be a *second* Predator). And where before the team was moving down groups of soldiers at once, now their members are going down one by one (they even do their version of the "cat scare" as Governor Ventura is surprised by a warthog.
3) The Kickass Mano-a-Monstro Movie: There's a wonderful transition point starting where Arnold emerges from the mud (he has to literally evolve and adapt) to realize what was first Many Against Many, then Many against One, now can only be One Against One. From that point, he uses all of his skills to set up the most elemental traps and weapons not to survive/escape, but to *face* his enemy, ending with the amazing shot of him holding the torch aloft and yelling out his challenge for his opponent. Far from some "final girl" button, this is a yet another brilliant mini-movie full of twists of fate as two powerful and intelligent forces face off.
Great job, Patrick, and good luck fitting in prop comics and cute animal acts into your take on the talk show!

You nailed it, that's exactly what I was thinking about, the third act is a primal/versus/mute/pure-cinema moment. What a f..king masterpiece !

Good point! (Doesn't Arnold and the Predator literally say that to each other before the Predator starts the countdown?) There's so many cool reversals going on in this movie.
This was splendid. Well done! I knew there was a reason I loved this movie so much! Also, as an aside, I also really loved that the movie also took special care to show the audience that the "Slasher" (the alien Predator) was also vulnerable. He bleeds, screams in pain while removing a bullet, and he even literally shrieks and squeals when he's surprised by their net trap. Off the top off my head, I don't recall seeing a Slasher movie where the Slasher is humanized so much. It really elevates the film for me.
Wow end of the video got me so excited! I agree, John McTiernan is an amazing underappreciated director. I am really excited to see the next episode!

Die Hard with a Vengeance is one of the best action movies of the 90's. His direction is so well done, the escalating tension and maneuvering the multiple plot lines takes a real master director or at least a team that understands story and clear action scenes.
Surely we need a reaction episode where Hank watches predator now?!?

I was a producer on the Predator Special Edition you reference in the video and I have to say your take is fantastic. The Thomas brothers originally pitched the script as Rambo meet Alien, so you are DEAD ON.

I am loving the format, loving the beard, but keep it out of the mouth for the best results. I like the band, Matt's Rugrat rant, the unsettling way Charl is filmed above a forest on a fire escape. Very inventive and entertaining.

I loved Predator as kid. But when I rewatched as an adult I saw the POV camera style of the film. When we actually see the Predator in it's full form for the first time, the camera aproaching and then... BLAM there it is. It blew my mind
AUDITION by Takeshi Miike is also another gearshift movie. Starts as a family friendly movie, turns into a comedy, then a romance, then a thriller, horror and finally gore.

Great video, Also Predator 2 is highly underrated and since you mentioned it in your essay , Last action hero is well over due the love it deserves for being both a great satire of the Hollywood action movie while simultaneously being a great Hollywood action movie , No easy feat.

For some reason my dad and I were so into Predator that we used our cassette recorder to make tapes of it when we rented it…and for a long time listening to Predator was a common activity on any and all car rides, etc…. Quoting Predator is an integral part of our personalities… I cant say “Thanks” without hearing a whispered. “Any time”… etc… once while teenaged me snuck past my sleeping father he briefly awoke and said “same kinda moon, same kinda jungle”…. If I call his attention to something that takes any effort to see at first… he does the entire Dillon style “yeah I see it” … “what the hell’s got Billy so spooked” means “person/animal X is behaving such that it is Billy-like…. Like if our dog suddenly fixated on a window or whatnot… I could continue and go far deeper,… Its so comprehensively integrated that for my father and I nearly everything spoken in Predator has become a part of our core language in every way… it makes most everything continuously hilarious, yet serious…I… truly cannot articulate just…how deep it goes. …. And this year it grows hot

Kind of a Rev. Lovejoy "Do What You Feel LIke" bit at the end with the Entertainer slip-ups. Very nice.
The Guest. Fantastic modern slasher film that blends genres and certainly subverts expectations, all with a fantastic synthwave soundtrack.
Superhero meets slasher has been done a few times, as mentioned by others in the comments but there is a fun B-movie literally called "All Supererhoes Must Die" and when double checking the name I found out it even has a sequel.
Patrick looks like the grumpy old guy from Home Alone with his beard that length.
I came for Charl, I stayed for the absolute flex of displaying Asterix au jeux olympique just chilling in the backdrop.

Alien = SciFi + Slasher
It's funny that McTiernan considers the scene a subversion because whatever he intended it is constantly held up as one of the most awesome scenes of the movie. It is pure gun porn with all the sound and fury, and while they don't hit the alien after the first couple rounds, the destruction inflicted on the jungle is immense and shows they are not fucking around. It also makes it clear to them they have a real problem here, because they just took their best shot and whiffed.
I've always thought both Predator and The Thing 82 would work better without the opening shot of the spacecraft. It takes away the mystery a little.
Have you seen Krampus, Patrick? It holds a dear place in my heart for keeping me wondering until the end whether it is a comedy or horror movie first.
Great video. I agree the slasher movie is in there but the third act is also another genre twist possibly. While the final girl often prepares or the lays traps this isn't the entire third act and it's done more survival and escape. I think Dutch's confrontation with the predator moves from slasher final struggle to battle (although arguably this starts at the if it bleeds line) He calls predator out and the predator ultimately faces him on equal terms by choice. Perhaps this is when it becomes a more man v monster movie like Aliens or Tremors or maybe a revenge movie. But the extra genre gears are just more of this a classic. PS: Anna was not innocent, only unarmed, she was part of a violent guerilla group that excited prisoners, she tried to take out Dutch, and forcefully escaped. Your point stands that her less dangerous status protected her from the director's spin on the slasher rule, but it's even more well done because it's not so on the nose and makes sense within the story's world.
The Amazon series 'The Boys' is about a group of people killing off the Justice League, so you kind of already got beat to the punch on that one.

One of my favorite lessons in college was when we spent the first half reading the Polyphemus episode of the Odyssey (Book 9) and then the second half watching scenes from Predator. Practically identical.

Predator, Die Hard, The Hunt For Red October, Last Action Hero. One of my favourite runs of movies from any director ever. Two of those have remained in my top 10 for 30 years.
Today I weirdly watch the Die Hard episode of Movies that Made Us, and took a deep dive into the Director and Writers, then this showed up. It's nice when things like that happen.

We've only seen glimmers of it in movies, but Batman fits this where he is the "Predator/Slasher". He picks off his victims one by one. His victims are the ones that commit a crime (substitute for sex). And he is this unstoppable force. The only difference would be that the "monster" wins and comes out on top.
That closing lick of the theme song at 0:40 is perfection. I crack up every single time I hear it.

2. At about 4:30 when you listed all those movies I was sure you were reading a list, and I wondered where you had it, so I re-watched and you never broke eye contact with the camera, so it was clear you actually memorized that list (or just knew it) and I was super impressed
I went on one, very weird date with a voice actor from Rugrats, who was somehow intensely weirded out by the fact I had seen Rugrats.
Technically, something killing off superheroes is arguably how Watchmen starts.

I think Rambo 2 was called “Rambo First Blood Part 2” because the first movie was originally just called “First Blood” but Rambo is more catchy as a franchise title.
