I think the new series weapons are beam weapons but are inconsistently rendered/portrayed. During closeup scenes, they are instant and continuous beams. In further away shots, they have more travel time and resemble bursts of energy (eg. pew pew cannons). The problem is they should've had the energy blasts resemble near-instant continuous beams for medium-distance scenes too and only use travel-time bursts for very far away scenes. For example, at 0:49, you can see the closest blue energy beams pass by the window instanteously in a continuous beam, while the further away beams pass by more slowly with travel time and resemble bursts.
Having seen the older show, this is a pretty good adaption. My only complaint is the derpy exosuits instead of the skull-faced power armor with battle axes.
