My $5 a month US Mobile plan (reviewed in this video) still works... but I cant seem to find it for a new connection. However, the website has a $6 per month plan including tax which has is unlimited calls + texts +1 GB of data (twice of what was in $5 plan). this is still a pretty good option. If someone does not need data at all - I don't see just the call and text option of $2 at this time. See if the $6 plan is workable for you,
Ultra mobile offers international roaming but for addnl fee of $15 per month. (www.ultramobile.com/plans/) T-Mobile used to have free international roaming on all its prepaid plans but sigh.. that time has passed. If you are going to travel international for a few weeks, may be look into Global phone number or Internet phone number like Skype. It works anywhere there is WiFi, costs $50 per year, and you can forward US phone number to Skype number and then viola! you can get all calls forwarded to Skype. Also if you add the US phone number's caller ID over skype number (not port, just add ID) you can use Skype to call people and they will see your US phone number in their caller ID. works awesome for 2 Factor authentication.
Wanted to add, TextNow phone number works international perfectly fine for calls and text messages!! I have the free version which is app based, and used it a month ago on recent trip and could not believe that it was working without issues. Probably the best 2nd phone number!! (or primary number if one prefers)
The drop in service may be due to location. Around where I live the service is pretty good, and it also works international so it has worked okay for me. what service works best in your area?
No more customization for US Mobile - but still good plan options.
US mobile no longer have $2 or $5 plan. is there a way to still getting the such plan?

I have an ATT locked phone. How do I unlock it, or is it necessary?
If locked phone was used with ATT for at least six months, call ATT customer service and request them to unlock it.
don't buy Ultra Mobile, it sucks - keeps dropping all cellular service
