Mother Dexter stole the show! So sad she died before this episode aired. and the groom died a month after it aired.Mother Dexter brought so much laughter right up until the end. Now thats how we should all go out.Thank You God for letting Judith and Burt Complete the story line in the nick of time.
Mother Dexter was the Sophia Petrillo of her day---she always got the best lines. Audrey used to get the best lines, but she was eclipsed when Mother Dexter arrived on the scene.
EVERYONE was eclipsed when Mother Dexter spoke. I recently found a few MD clips and have enjoyed them. I had forgotten how hilarious she was. At her age, she was fantastic with her lines, and especially her timing. She was the "saccharine granny" a few years earlier on TV commercials.
God Bless Judith Lowry and ol Burt Mustin, now and forever. They were the BEST at what they did. It's 40 years they are both gone now, and this episode is as funny NOW, as then. Sadly Lowry died a month before it aired, and Mustin a month after it aired. BUT all these decades later, never forgotten, always remembered! --And now PHYLLIS' Cloris Leachman in 2018 has passed them BOTH in age at 92+!
RIP now to actress Cloris Leachman, actress extraordinaire who made all these senior actors blend into this mosaic of comedy. Give Mother Dexter a big hug up there in the clouds from us all! ~Sleep, well all.
Jane Rose was also wonderful as dotty Audrey Dexter. I never really minded the fact the show had so many fools, it just made it that much funnier to me.
Mother Dexter was the show - thank God she was on half of the episodes. Without her, they would've mostly been quite boring. OMG, that "Memory lane" sequence was hilarious!
This episode first aired when I was 14. I tape-recorded it on an audio cassette player. Mother Dexter's bridal shower had the best lines in the entire series. She was born the same year as my grandmother and shared the same sharp wit.
Cloris as Phyllis, just a brilliant continuation of the Mary Tyler Moore Dynasty of Spin offs. Sadly, Judith Lowry Passed away after this was filmed, Phyllis was canceled after only three seasons, it was a surprise, but, i guess it just had a bad start with the death of Barbara Colby after episode 3 was filmed, didn't give the Show a good start.
Get over yourself... good grief... this was a great episode and show. Period. Deaths of two actors, one after the 3rd episode, early on had nothing to do with the show's cancellation 3 years later.

Phyllis debuted on Monday nights sandwiched between the two highest rated sitcoms of 1975: All in the Family and Rhoda. CBS owned Mondays. No competition from NBC or ABC. In the 1976-77 season, NBC moved Little House on the Prairie to Mondays opposite Rhoda and Phyllis. At the same time Rhoda’s producers made the stupid decision to break up Rhoda and Joe’s marriage. Viewers turned to Little House instead. Rhoda and Phyllis’ ratings plummeted. CBS moved them both to Sunday nights. Rhoda managed to rebound slightly but Phyllis didn’t.
Well now, that was cute. But you know, I can’t be all the mad at Phyllis because she worked hard to bring together a beautiful wedding for the happy couple. Surely she could have delegated the job of picking up Mother Dexter to someone else not quite so busy with wedding preparations, like say, maybe her son? Just saying…

So, Sophia could have been Mother Dexter's daughter.

Mark Conti Actually, the show only lasted two seasons. Had Barbara Colby and Lowry lived, the show would have lasted much longer.
