That option is on the table and is what any honest physicist claims- we don’t know. We try to come up with ideas which then are examined rigorously and tested to look for flaws in those ideas. But until any such idea is thoroughly tested over and over, we can only say we don’t know.

Every theory has limits and assumptions ,which might be wrong ,even the best theory relativity does not work in particle physics . So scientists says give me one miracle I do the rest,I believe we think in box , universe is much more complicated and there must be transcendence, even quantum fluctuation need space to start with
