Was für wunderbaren Solisten...Scotto, Horne, Pavarotti und Ghiaurov! Der Chor und das Orchester waren auch ausgezeichnet. Der unvergleichliche Dirigent war am Leben und noch jung. Das römische Publikum war echt glücklich!

I first heard Pavarotti in Rigoletto at the Comunale Theatre , Firenze in 1966 , I said to my then girlfriend that man will go far , and so he did . Hearing many recordings of him over the years I never really liked his singing , it seemed lazy to me , sometimes better than others . In fact over the years his sing was inconsistent . I have another Verdi Requiem recording conducted by Karajan which shows Pavarotti's very finest singing as here , quite an equal of Gigli and Caruso . Since Pavarotti's death I have found other recordings of superb singing , " Pavarotti and the Italian Tenor " and in the Jean Pierre Ponelle film of Rigoletto . Marilyn Horne had a very powerful Mezzo Soprano voice . I think The Verdi Requiem was his greatest work , though not everyone will agree .

@ Vito lo re Maestro in questa esecuzione di Claudio Abbado del Requiem di Verdi con l'orchestra della RAI si sta veramente a "pelo dritto" e la Rai aveva nel 1970 ben 4 Orchestre pubbliche ovvero Napoli Firenze Torino e Milano. Adesso è rimasta solo quella di Torino, se non erro. La saluto e la ringrazio con immutato affetto e simpatia a mio avviso diciamo che la Musica non ha fatto grandi passi, purtroppo. v.v. -:)
Maybe BENCHMARK - REQUIEM ?? It's so wonderfull to listen and to remember also we/us were young and full of hope. Let us never give up hope

Pavarotti reach the pinnacle of his career with the Andrea Cenier at the Met in 96. The instrument and artistry were in sync for a brief moment. When he was young, it was just a beautiful lyric tenor. While he was doing those stadium concerts with the giant hankie, he was secretly studying for his great 3rd act. THE Cheniers and Idomeneo. He may have been lazy, but he was a serious artist underneath the hype.
Listen to the "solidness", i.e. the chest voice of the singers! Nowadays, most singers have only loudness, volume.

Yes, Pavarotti was a great promise when young.Placido 's dramatic voice persisted, making him one of the most outstanding of his time.

Pavarotti comes in early in the middle of the Ingemisco and goofs all over the quartet work, but who cares? So beautiful.
The big "P" is a lousy musician who can't read music; a great pity because he is have the makings of a great tenor and would have made even if he hadn't hired Brelin for PR. A real artist doesn't goof around while performing.
