    All the people that have been bothering me since the DDLC vid to cover One Shot got their wish. And the monkey's paw finger curls, and the price is a disaster of a production schedule.

      Definitely worth the wait. Great analysis, it reminded me why I loved this game so much when I sadly watched a let's play of it instead of playing it myself quite a few years ago. This game is criminally underrated, thanks for covering it !
      Also the guy that made your theme song has a style that's right up my alley, so thanks for that too

    One concept I’ve absolutely loved when it comes to fourth wall breaking is making a character goes insane once they know about it. It’s like being a human locked in a zoo and there’s nothing you can do to get out, you ARE the animal everyone is there to see.,

  • @temporalwolf7054
    @temporalwolf7054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    For me, the most poignant use of fourth wall breaks or magic circle expansions that I've experienced come from Nier. Not Automata but the original. To talk about this has a rare two layers of spoilers so I'll be sectioning them off accordingly.
    -Spoiler warning tier 1-
    So, the very world of Nier is presented in such a way that a player wouldn't really notice certain aspects. Stuff like it always being day when everyone is out doing things, lack of weather variety, etc. are all just normal things that players kind of expect. But the fact that Nier actually goes out of its way to explain those aspects - Earth's rotation has slowed to a point that it has become rotation locked to the sun - paints a very odd picture. One that is familiar, yet alien. None of the characters have ever seen night, have no idea what the stars look like, or anything of the sort and it creates this odd sort of feeling of separation between player and character. Yes you're controlling Nier, but you are never really allowed to be fully immersed in that character. Nier's experiences are so different and alien that there are just some things that cannot be reconciled and that calls attention to that separation. The Forest of Myth takes that a step further, expanding the magic circle to include the very conventions of genre, as the characters simultaneously seem to experience vivid dreamscapes while also being fully aware that it's all being communicated through white text in a black void. Characters even having remarks about how the narration describes tone of voice, etc. But that's just the prequel for the grand finale.
    -Spoiler warning tier 2-
    So, you've gotten all the weapons, completed the story a couple times for the first couple of endings, and have beaten the secret final boss of the game, your companion Kaine who's entire existence has been hardship. And you're given a choice. For the first time the player is invited fully into Nier's head, finally ignoring that separation that the game had spent the entire rest of the time building on. And you're given a choice: end Kaine's suffering, or sacrifice Nier to save her. The fourth wall break here is the very act of immersion. The game presents it as Nier's choice, but YOU the player face the consequences. In very real terms, Nier the character doesn't disappear from the timeline, or anything of the sort that the game says he does, instead it deletes your save file, and prevents you from using the same name for any subsequent files. YOUR Nier, YOUR time with the game, the characters, everything you worked for, all the memories good and bad, that's the price you pay. The game even warns you multiple times that this is a real data wipe, and you don't get anything out of it in the long run. And yet... for me at least, it was a simple choice. In that moment I thought that if being separated from those characters for the rest of their and my life meant they had some chance at happiness, even in a dying world... I'd take it. In a metaphorical sense, the Nier from the playthrough I did died and... kind of became ME in an afterlife sort of sense. That's something I've yet to see any other game really accomplish.

    Awesome vid! The one thong i will boldly disagree on is that your examination of fictional characters in relation to their reality to us was pretentious. I personally think that the internet has a painfully quick reaction to paint introspective or philosophical stuff as pretentious, despite it warranting further discussion. Eitger way, thanks for sharing, it gave me something to think on :)

    Not sure if you follow "Psych of Play" but he did a "Magic Circle" video as well: th-cam.com/video/fOcjDxW1g4k/w-d-xo.html. If you're interested.
    You did a very good using it to explain how OneShot "weaponized it" against the player. I think I heard it on a NPR program called "The Hidden Brain" where people were asked which cake would they prefer from their significant other: a small, crude, basic cupcake personalized for them; or a grand, beautiful wedding cake that's for them a a dozen people. Which option would they like more? You are balancing against two very different (not comparable or equal) qualities. If i remember correctly, most people still preferred the personalized cake. In OneShot, the game is doing it's darnest to put so much emotional baggage on one character to try to outweigh the many faceless characters you would sacrafice. That sounds wonderful! Love it.
    Last point, what's always important to remember is that "All Art is Manipulative". If that's difficult to understand, at least remember that "All Video Games are Manipulative". Everything in a game has been handcrafted by a human to give a certain "feel" to the player. Every choice of sprite, controls, dialog, pacing, sound effects, everything was carefully chosen to cause some kind of emotion in the player.

    Interesting idea here about saving the game/fourth wall breaks(no spoilers for Outer Wilds please). I play a lot of ps2 games, and most of the time, you can only save at certain crystals and spots. Making you wonder, if there's a puzzle that separates you from a save place, is that 4th wall breaking? It's immersion breaking. The magic circle is stretched to include it, but it's not really a worry of the story. The Wanderer sometimes prays and sleeps at a shrine, big deal.
    The fascination is the simulation and the specific interaction in the 4th wall. Oneshot calls out that they needed someone on a computer to run a simulation. Thus, we are pressing buttons to interact with the world. But what that interaction like? Superhot has the #1 advantage here (theoretically, cuz I got the feeling you didn't like that one) because every hand motion you make is the exact motion your puppeteer is making.
    Ultimately, it's all about how we discuss the existence of inputs. The Blair Witch Project is so simple but ultimately explains everything about the audience's fourth wall break in one fowl swoop. How To Talk Minnisotan is (a very niche but) a musical that takes place in front of an audience. The book series Sea of Ink and Gold is massively spoiled by telling you that it breaks the fourth wall. All of these inputs are examined, whether it be watching a project actively filmed, watching a play that the actors are aware is a performance, or reading a book that is aware of you. It's tread ground.
    So now, the biggest step is asking this question to video games. Is that 'save crystal' just something that helps you remember, or is sleeping next to a shrine actually putting you back in time? Are you constantly whispering into Neko's ear what direction they should move, or is that fps character following your mouse due to a hard pulling feeling? And how does explaining that improve a story by expanding on things you don't otherwise think of.
    All food for thought.
    (also, it's so good to see you again! Ringing the bell was completely worth it. Thoughts and prayers for whatever you were going through)

    • @Rycluse
      @Rycluse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting thoughts. I think that save crystal thing is similarly "leaning" on the fourth wall since it leverages your frustration with having to do a section over, but like I alluded, calling it that invites the thought that almost any game has a sort of hazy relationship with its fourth wall. Our fingers are always dipping into the magic circle, and that's kind of their appeal as an art form.
      I actually liked Superhot, I just thought its story campaign wasn't quite interesting enough to merit all the time it took from gameplay.
      And no worries, nothing bad happened to me! Just a combination of this being a big project and life routinely getting in the way.
