If the ink has had the same problem in more than one pen, it is not the pen. It is the ink. You need to be very careful using brass sheets on a pen when you haven’t used them before. I practiced using brass shims on cheap pens before I ever used them on a pen I love. The first step to get a somewhat dry writer working better is to first try pressing a little harder and then seeing if that helped open the times. Then I would try brass shims. Also, using brass shims may make your warranty no longer valid. I have been able to get very dry writers to be nice and wet. It depends how wet you want your pen because you can make your pen to wet and then it will burp ink.

Ooh please tell me what do I need to watch out for when doing them? What should I be careful with? Genuine question because I have no idea lol. I don’t have warranties I’m worried about but I would like to make them wetter

@@Wholelatteplans The first thing to do is to try to change the ink. Some inks are known to be wetter than others. If you have any pilot Iroshizuku inks, put one in your pen and let me know how the pen writes with one of those inks. It Pilot Iroshizuku inks flow well, it could be that the pen is dry. Each time you floss the tines with the brass sheets, you want to check the flow to make sure you didn’t separate the tines too much. Keep repeating this process until the pen writes the way you want. If you get the pen to be a gusher more than you want on accident, it can be fixed, it is just not as easy to fix.

I have a 580 (fine and stub) as well. I have had Herbin shimmer ink in it for too long. Forgot about it and all I did is rise and wipe the nib and all good, I was lucky. I suggest you get a loupe and look at the nib tines as the 580 fine sounds like the tines may be slightly misaligned. Be careful not to twist the tines when you floss. It’s unlikely that so many pens needed that (I have quite a variety if pens and I have only flossed a couple). Last suggestion, try a simple ink like Waterman’s as it flows easily. Thanks for the video, you are clear spoken and it is an important issue that many pen crazies like us need to deal with.

I dooo need to get a loupe!! And then learn how to fix them lol do you just simply move them back into place?? Would a tine misalignment cause the ink to stop flowing entirely?!

@@Wholelatteplans I am not an expert and go carefully. I recommend joining Foundation Pen Network forum where there is good advice. However, it is a possibility that one tine is a little high or low. Knowing when to push one down or lift is important. A loupe is a first step so 1. You can check the nib on the pens that are functioning correctly 2. Diagnose a potential problem. It can help you know what to ask in a forum. Also, I have had to remove a nib from the feed and clean it as an issue may not be the tines if it is only flow (could be gummed up). Additionally, some inks will behave differently.

I'm a newbie but I think your feeds are gunked up with shimmer preventing the flow.

I think it’s just the tines area thankfully because clearing them seemed to help!!

Yeah I am not a huge shimmer user but I I do I try and use medium. I use brass sheens for cleaning a bit. It’s great for pens that you can completely dissolve because you can run the shins along the feed. If you want to increase the flow, you can always use a razor or an xacto knife to increase the depth of the feed. It’s a delicate procedure. I guess fun. Good to get some cheaper pens on which you can practise pen surgery.

TWSBI is probably too expensive for me to be tinkering around with too much.
