Legend says that he was shy and spent a lot of time learning from the black guitarists in Georgia. His tuning is unique, makes the rock guitar so versatile, lead, rythm and bass, he was the only string in the band.... Hope Ricky's talent gets vindicated soon, because he deserves it. Rest well, friend :)
For many of his/their songs the tuning and style is very surfer rock to me. This kind of reinforces or compliments the late 50's esthetics their visuals often took on.
Not quite. Kate sometimes played guitar or bass guitar, and Cindy sometimes played guitar. But that's only for a few songs, so Ricky was still the primary player of stringed instruments.
Exactly, Gary!!!!... Ricky "made that sound". I lost a brother in 91 and even today it hurts... I cant imagine what it would feel to be on stage playing all the time the melodies composed by a dead brother. Sadness? happiness? I dont know. R.I.P. Ricky and my brother. Thanks for your comment.
He's why they were so great in the early years. His tuning was so weird. Weird tuning for a weird band. It was brilliant. Remember, new wave hit big in the early 80's, and the B-52's cut their first album in 1978.
Incredibly under-recognized guitarist. Totally unique. Fantastic tone, incredible rhythm chops and totally original tuning/voicings. Rock Lobster with a clean tone rocks harder than most hard rock songs with tons of distortion.
Why under recognized ! time did not give him that chance but his contribution to the B52 sound and creativity was huge, their popularity at some point was the recognition
Ricky Wilson and Marc Moreland of Wall of Voodoo are my two favorites. Both were criminally underrated and had such interesting style. Marc lived a little bit longer into his 40’s but losing both during their prime was tragic.
I remember exactly where I was at when KROQ announced Ricky’s passing. I want to say the DJ claimed Ricky passed from cancer. We all discovered the sad truth later. I felt like I lost my brother and I never had never met him.
It takes a lot of nerve to make music that is very different from the status quo then put it on stage while standing proud. I wonder if he knew that, sure hope he did.
He was serious, he broke a string at Hollywood Bowl in 1980 and show nearly stopped. But once started again, it was the unique style that possesses you. They opened for Talking Heads. Great show.
I heard that he only used the four lowest strings, but would sometimes keep the two treble strings both at E but would sometimes not even have the second string on the guitar. It seems to make sense because he never played high notes.
He wasn't. He is who put the band on the map and held the core talent and put the songs together. Keith picked up the torch later. The back of the band were it's essential sound.

He was a genius. Ricky forever!. =)
I love the B-52s before and after Ricky but Ricky's genius made the band even more unique and special. Love Ricky forever.

Ricky not dead. He lives every time his guitar plays here and anywhere.
Amazing stuff.
A brilliant talent who needs more recognition. All the B52s were great, but to me he made that sound.

I won't ever stop trying.
I bought a white Fender Telecaster because of Ricky. He definetively got the best from it!

Always loved Ricky Wilson's tone. The B-52's were the best. RIP Ricky.
Amen.
Give Me Back My Man is probably the best example of the level of his artistry. It’s like watching cinema. 💕
I would also add 52 Girls and the iconic Rock Lobster but yes, probably the best example.
Woah. This is so dope!!! Ricky really was the core of their sound!!!
So true

This is my Favorite B-52s song. Such heart and soul in Ricky's playing and writing. I really Love Cindy!
I never listened to this without vocals before. There some really cool stuff going on.
Unique brilliant and so so cool.. rest well Ricky
Awesome, Ricky was the best.

It wasn’t too long after Ricky that KROQ died too.
A true genius gone way before his time.
As a person that plays, this is remarkable. No notes missed.
Never forget him.
Rad tribute. His tone was insane. He certainly had a unique sound. Pulled off a thickness with single coils. Awesome
Sounds like an instrumental version of "give me back my man".
fiery1962 you are right. it's exactly that song... but in instrumental version. be fine.
ricky wilson's guitar style was the light and sound of heaven truly nothing had come along that even matched him... true innovator... sadly missed
I adore this version
He had a fantastic sound
Sweet tribute to Your brother!!, I love this!!🤗
❤...
The best!! Would love to still have him around
Thank you.
Very much all alone on top. When a life is so much more powerful than the myth.

Love you Ricky❤️. Such an incredible talent!!!!! Thank you for your music bro✌️🙂

THAT was a great show... particularly if it was TH as a four piece
Really good!! RIP, Ricky.
I've long thought you could release non-vocal mixes of the first few albums as minimal garage surf records.
God I had a crush on Ricky.

Good luck trying to figure out his tuning.
4 real lol. amazing.

Where did you get this awesome backing track?
32 años , tan joven? De que murió?
H.I.V. descanse en Paz.
Im saddened that he was a sacrifice for the band to succeed
He died of aids related complications.
