  • The dramatic conclusion: Mike Schmidt brings the Phillies a run closer with a homer in the eighth, but with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth, he strikes out swinging against Mitch Williams. The Cubs closer, who allowed three singles to start the inning, then strikes out the side, and the crowd goes wild. The Cubs win 5-4.

Wish the Phillies would go back to these uniforms.

Was at this game. Upper box behind the plate, 9th row. Schmidt's final Wrigley stand, Wild Thing and then some!

The Bleachers were full, the lights were less than a year old & 23 year old Greg Maddox was going to rewrite the Cub record book. Seems like yesterday.

I remember this game like it was yesterday. I caught the end when I came home from school. I remember thinking "oh crap, Mitch Williams is walking everyone." Then he struck out the side, of course some of the Phillies helped him by chasing bad pitches.

Little did we know this would be Schmitty's final opening day. Coming off injury that ended his season in '88 he started off the season well 5 for 14 with 2 HR's in this Cubs series and it looked like the old Schmidt was back. But as the season wore on he started to slump. Didn't help that the team stunk.

Schmidt again. Why couldn't he have been drafted by the Cubs and became our third baseman after Ron Santo?

Opening Day in 1989 on WGN-TV Channel 9 & WGN Superstation. That right the Bulls came back to Channel 9 in '89-90 the following year the White Sox came back to WGN-TV 9 With Dean Richards announcing.

How many HR could Schmitty have hit if he played his entire career as a Cub?

I wanted to hear the sound system blaring "Wild Thing" as Williams walked toward the mound to pitch, not because of any connection to Charlie Sheen and Major League, but because Mitch Williams' nickname actually was Wild Thing.

Didn't Schmidt retire within a month of two of this game? That epic game in 78 or 79 when Kingman and Schmidt hit mammoth HR's in Chewing Gum Field. The final score was more like an Eagles vs Bears game- 23-22 or something like that.

By this point in the game, I suspect Harry could have been stopped by the police for a BWI (broadcasting while drunk).

I think I counted Mitch Williams threw about 68 pitches!
