Polysorbate doesn't only prevent the gunk from sticking to your skin, but it prevents "ring around the tub", or an oily residue in the tub itself... which can cause slip and fall hazards when moving in the tub, including standing up and stepping out of the tub! I refuse to buy a bath bomb without an emulsifier or polysorbate. Period. It SHOULD be industry standard to include it. It isn't expensive! There's no excuse!

As an ex candle store owner who made their candles, usually paraffin wax does crater as it cools. The product condenses as it cool at different temps, so the sides usually are fine but if the cool down isn’t controlled you get the dip. 🖤

Honestly, I think both would be fun - though with bath bombs, I feel like if you're willing to buy the citric acid on your own, they're pretty easy to put together easy without a kit. But if it's all about the fun and for a gift? Go for it!

This brand has age appropriate kits but I’ve never seen reviews for them. I’d love to see you review more of their kits, even if they aren’t a bath and body product! Also maybe a rating of ‘can a pre-teen handle this’ would be wonderful!

I don't know about value. When the pandemic hit my daughter got in her head that she wanted to make bath bombs and I figured, sure, it's SCIENCE! I got some nice shaped plastic molds for $3, but the suggestion I found online was use plastic Easter eggs. I used candy flavorings and food grade orange and vanilla extracts (because they were what I had on hand and you DON'T want rando essential oils unless you know they won't irritate your skin) but a bottle of imitation vanilla is $2 Corn starch I had on hand, but you can get 1 lb for $2 I had a 5 lb bag of baking soda on hand for laundry, but my grocery store has 1 lb boxes for $1 and that's enough for a dozen bombs 2 lb Bag of citric acid was $12, again you don't need as much as I got, if you're looking for small scale making you can get a jar of fruit-fresh for about 5 bombs for less than $5. or just crush up vitamin C tablets. At about 3-5 tablets per bomb (depending on size) you're looking at $3 or less for a dozen bombs. Food coloring (what I had on hand, a few drops is all you need) but you can get 4 colors for $2. 3 lb bag Epsom salts for $3 (that is enough for 100+ bath bombs) and olive oil, coconut oil, or shea butter are nice-- but not needed. You can get everything but the mold from most grocery stores, no ordering needed, and if you already have an Easter egg, save some time and $$. So you can "make your own" dozen-- with enjoyable scents you can smell and avoid the skeezy layer on top of the water-- for $15 IF you have nothing and have to go buy everything from scratch (with a bunch of stuff left over.)

I made a bath bomb kit almost identical to this that was marketed to adults. The plastic wrap just makes it easier to get them out of the mold, not because they stick, but because the mixture gets so crumbly without the polysorbate that even with all the pressing etc, they just fall apart instantly.
I do see a point to the scent choices for the candles. I would've use a kit like that to make a gift for mom or grandma and as a kid it always made me sad if a craft kit had scents like marshmallow that I knew they wouldn't like. Floral or citrus seems like perfect choices for gifting. If you're making it for yourself however I definitely agree a more fun kiddy option would be smart to include!
I did the same bath bomb kit about a year ago with my 10yo neice and 5yo nephew. 😊 While being a little too delicate for the 5yo, the directions were easy to follow and both kids had so much fun. Honestly, I thought it was a great price for the about 2 hours of fun that we had with it. Also, they had so much fun watching the extra mix fizz in the sink that they just played 'potions' in the sink for the rest of the visit. Clean up was easy and we beat the heat without any arguing or boredom 🎉 Next time I would consider buying a more professional kit so we could make more since the kiddos are getting older and enjoyed it so much the first time. 10/10 thought it was a great kit for the price paid.

The sinkhole is the wax adhering to the wick. It’s a normal thing. Candle makers just top it up. Tunneling normally happens after burning the candle happens because of candle memory. If you don’t burn the candle to the edges, then the candle remembers it and won’t melt beyond that. That wick was quite thin.
As a maker, I'm not a really a fan of either kit. Both of these products need sooo much testing to get them right. But your video is so fun! bath bombs are really difficult to master- it took me awhile! This kit needs better instructions and more ingredients. Polysorbate 80 is a must when making bath bombs or the ingredients will sit on the top of the water and then stain your tub. Adding water (or witch hazel) is a must to get your bath bombs to be solid. For round bombs, there are trays you can use (I use foam egg crates with plastic wrap over) to keep their round shape. Yours look great, did they stain your tub?
I love when people who knows what they're doing do kits like these cos you can give your knowledge. Like it's not you this is a bad kit or it's good but we can make it better 😹

The bath bombs definitely won. You can make 5, it had lots of colors, and the mold actually worked lol. Too bad the scents were not stronger. For the candles the kit should have had a third container so you could make 3 without waiting for one to burn out and reuse the container plus buy an extra wick. Or have made two larger containers for bigger candles.
I disagree, you're better off having more wax than you need (in case some gets spilled!) It's not like the kit was sold per weight, it calls out it makes two candles. As for value, the wax and the reusable tins cost way more than the raw ingredients for the bath bombs, I just priced out making a dozen from scratch from my grocery store right this moment and it's less than $15 for a dozen bombs (with as much vanilla as you need!), if you have nothing like food coloring on hand already. It's even cheaper if you have pantry staples on hand/ account for having left overs you can use for other stuff.

When I used to make bath bombs, I always loosely filled each half of the mold and made sure to really mound it over and then smash the halves together, always came out perfect!
Now this might be a completely wacky idea, but given your experience what if you created what you consider the perfect kit. Whether that's candles, bath bombs or whatever else. It would be interesting to see🙂❤

i used to run a toys r us in macys (last holiday season) and we sold STMT stuff. it was so overpriced for what it was. basically a $10 walmart kit put in a $20-something package i mean that was true of like all the stuff we sold but craft kits in particular always stood out to me bc i wanted them to be worth the price so badly but alas nope

What if... a kit had basically the simplest version of a cleansing balm as the "coconut oil" component. Polysorbate 80 and solid coconut oil blended and then poured. It would be such a simple fix to be honest.
Ive made the candle kit before and the kit quality seems to differ per kit. With my candles the pink colorent worked really well but the blue took almost the bottle to make a candle that was so light blue it was almost white. I used the lavender fragrance, and the candles had no scent. Burn quality was the same. As for the labels, I got only half were actually sticky the others were the type you had to tape down.
With two candle tins, three fragrance oils, and no instructions, I would have dumped AT LEAST a whole bottle of fragrance into those candles. Probably a whole bottle of color, too. I'd say that kit is doomed to make people unhappy.
I wouldn't want the rose as I hate that smell so much. But I love lavender and the orange one would be nice too. If they'd replaced the rose with a cinnamon then that would've gone great with the orange. Not keen on the colours though. I don't like pink or blue and mixing them giving purple wouldn't be better as I also don't like purple. But I guess at least purple would fit for lavender.

If it was oil fragrance and colour, you have to be very careful not to add too much as it can prevent the wax from setting properly.

If you need to wear gloves to mix the bath bombs then is it safe to use as a bath bomb??
My guess is there's a reaction with the other ingredients that makes it less irratating.
