"I do not fault the detractors and skeptics who proclaim that "Brotherhood" should be dismissed as merely representing this year’s archetypal festival drama-a pejorative term to some that indicates the kind of serious short film that confuses dourness with profundity, and is best understood as some young director’s try-hard bid to get their government film board to pony up for their feature debut. Let’s review the case: set in a locale exotic to the majority of elite fest-going cinephiles? Check. Tense and explosive family dynamics? Check. Gorgeous, yet restrained, cinematography? Check. Oh, and a sometimes languorous 25min runtime? Double-check! As a defense however to those critics and haters-watch the film. You’re wrong. Watch the film again.
While "Brotherhood" exhibits the trappings of a type of film that we often deride as “festivally”, it is really hard in my mind to contest its exquisiteness. It is highly specific in its character and world-building, buoyed by the authenticity of its writer/director, Meryam Joobeur, whom is of Tunisian descent, and by the capable performances of its first-time actors (their casting, central to conception of the film, is recounted here). As pure drama, the film delivers, inculcating mystery early on, then building to a devastatingly emotional climax. Finally, in theme, it pulls off the nice trick of being both topical and timeless: confronting complex contemporary issues, like religious extremism, with the tried and true spirit of a Greek tragedy.
Filmmakers have made hay for generations in porting the classics to film, from works as different as Laurence Olivier’s seminal Shakespeare adaptations to Clueless. Brotherhood is not an adaptation, but it is working with the same raw materials as Sophocles and Seneca-the defiance of one’s father, questions of honor, the inability to communicate with loved ones through the haze of anger, and, ultimately, betrayal...

One of the most realest shorts I've EVER SEEN. Created to make viewers feel discomfort and pain. It's almost claustrophobic and gosh, the close ups create so much tension. Loved it.
IT DOESN'T MATTER Hi mate! I'm also a filmmaker from the Philippines and I recently made a film about poverty, substance abuse, child abuse, and mental health in our country. I want to let my audience feel the anxieties, the fear, the pain, and all sorts of feelings poor Filipinos feel every single day. Moreover, it has deeper meanings hidden behind the visuals and the dialogue. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough budget to have it entered in a lot of festivals, so we only managed to join a few. Nevertheless, it also won awards, and I still aim to reach a greater audience to open eyes and minds with the state of 3rd world countries like ours. Hope you could give it a watch and a feedback and please continue supporting independent films. It would mean a lot. Thank you!

Oh my. I had no idea what to expect, I've seen some pretty decent shorts plenty of times and most of them have a weird feeling of, "Yeah, I know I'm watching a short without needing to be told" but this honestly felt like a full budget drama's first episode. The pacing was incredible, I THINK the acting was incredible (Not my language, so I don't understand if the inflections are well done) but it seemed fantastic, and facial acting is at least pretty much universal. I also love how the director didn't feel the need to waste time showing us the phone call, they went ahead and assumed we'd get it without it being fed to us (unlike most big budget films) and it also gave us an extra bit of suspense. When it ended I was honestly disappointed. NOT in the film but in the fact that there was no more when I truly wanted to keep watching out of pure interest and enjoyment. They took a subject matter to show a heartfelt story about a family in troubled times when many other people would have used to it fly some ultra political flag. There was no finger wagging, it was all just a story about a family. And it was great.

This movie is beautifully intricate. The shots are masterfully chosen to echo claustrophobia when needed, fleeting happiness when demanded and pure anguish when imposed. The acting is spot on. Every emotion is portrayed as it is, void of any excessive theatricaility. It makes you feel for the character and forget at some point the fictionality of the work. I am very proud of this Tunisian little masterpiece. This is to more of this loveliness.
Also, I must say, the landscape is absolutely beautiful. I could spend my life there.
And , if I had a child there, I would DEFINITELY name him/her "BOOMANAJA"......... even though, admittedly, after looking it up, I have no friggin clue what it means.

It never ceases to amaze me the petty jealousy and overbearing nature that some fathers can feel toward their sons and how much trouble they have to simply show love and affection to them. This father does a great job of driving his first son away and is well on his way with the middle boy too. The video does a great job of showing that as well as the wages for it.
I give this video a 8.5 of 10
I am astonished at how absolutely beautiful this film was. In it's execution, in it's concept, in it's scripts and in it's performances. I am absolutely blown away by every facet of this films components. What a beautiful, beautiful short film.

I really don't like reading subtitles. But, couldn't put it down. And, I'm sure this situation played out in someone's real life. Sad but beautiful.
I could see the regret in the child's eyes. But, also the fear of what the father thought he could have been capable of and what sheltering him could do to his family. Gets you right in the feels...

Powerful, impactful story. It has some effective some cinematographic close-ups. I wish it won the Academy Award for short film than Neighbour's window which is also good in its own right - maybe a step less from my subjective feeling.

If the son had been honest with the father in the beginning things would have been different. without the son talking to him his father did what he felt was right.
I came here looking for the 2nd episode... only to find it was a short film. Damn.... wanted to see more. O well... guess that’s the end.

beautiful movie, but just to make sure i got it, can someone explain to me the very end scene?
The father called the police and told them that his son was with isis and came back (it's a grave crime in Tunisia). In the beginning of the film, the son says he didn't kill anyone but the father didn't believe him. But after going back home from the store, the girl tells the parents that she wasn't carrying Malek's baby, she had slept with many other men and not their son, and that she had met him while they were both running away from isis. The father regrets what he did, asks his wife to hide the girl at her sister's house and runs to the beach where his sons were to warn Malek. But they came home after he had left, and the boy got caught.

@@krativatsalya7543 hmmm... i think it's to show us how this family lives. They are shepherds, living in the middle of nowhere (i am guessing the deep country side of the north or northwest of Tunisia). They butcher their own cattle to feed. And they are clearly poor. People like that are the target of terrorists. The kids are easily recruited into these organisations and if they do not cooperate, they kill them ( i remember a couple of shepherds were beheaded in the forests and mountains).
Also, since it's the first time for the boy to slaughter a sheep, i guess that means he is "of age". Whichalso tells the age of the older son when he left, early teen. I am not sure if they really wanted to send this message, but, there is an old saying here "he who doesn't know how to butcher (a sheep or any of the animals muslims consume), marrying someone is going to be scandalous" meaning, a man must know how to do that or else he's not "man" enough. Personally, i don't know anyone who still does that, but again, it shows how this family lives in the 21st century. (That's what i understood as a tunisian 😅)
So, i guess, that scene shows how that family lives which is why the boy joined ISIS.
And I am sorry if you that scene made you uncomfortable.
