Thank you for this video, ive purchased several kickstarters but refused to pay so much more just for sundrop, its ridiculous. Ive always wondered if there was a way to duplicate that look but hadnt found a tutorial video until you posted this. Appreciate it.
Amazing result! Looks awesome! I’ve always been reluctant on painting my minis myself, as I’m kind of a perfectionist and worry about not getting it right, so I considered it better to pay for sundrop. However, after watching this and being amazed at the results and realizing how easy it is, I’m seriously considering painting all the minis I have. Thank you so much for the video!
Great job Rob! Saving some folks some money and getting them acclimated to painting is a one-two punch combo. You're looking and sounding better, brother. Keep healing!
Never painted a mini in my life, i'm a big time beginner and i just finished my Zombicide 2nd Edition set with this (nuln oil + Agrax), i added some ''Berserker bloodshade'' from citadel for blood effect and some places and i love it!
Nice video. I've had good success using Citadel Wraithbone primer. Gives you a off white / tan base to start with. Then I use Army Painter strong tone or dark tone depending on what color I want. One coat is typically enough
Honestly you cheer me up to try it on some of my minis ! But they are expensive ! I dont want to mess them up but your video will surely help me a lot ! So thank you very much, and +1 subscriber !
I need to take time to go back to past painting tutorials series Rob has done as id wanted to learn the best ways to do minis painting even though i dont really collect too many games with figures, but i do want to buy individual bare figures for homebrew character figures for adapting to games i have or games i am building from files on bgg and working on some of my own original games. Thanks Rob. Those look really cool, like real stone carved statues.
I ordered Tainted Grail totday and I am happy I found this video to do the painting myself. I will need some protective stuff first to do paintings in my house and to not damage my furniture, but then I am going to start the whole thing. Thank you for encouraging me and explaining how easy it goes. I am not afraid to do it anymore :-)
I found Army Painter Skeleton Bone primer followed by Games Workshop Nuln Oil to be VERY close to the stock Tainted Grail Sundrop. I need to try the Army Painter shades or a more khaki primer to see if I can get it more exact. Thanks for the video.
Rather than plain ol' gray or sundrop style shade, I've been thinking about just a two-tone paint job for my miniatures to speed through them. Pick a darker color for my opaque base coat and then dry brush downward to approximate zenithal highlights with an opaque lighter color.
I've never painted and one of my fears is finding out I don't like the choices while painting them... How do you try different shades? Is there a way to "undo" the job safely?
You can also use citadel contrast paints. They have more pigment than the shades wash. But love the job you did using the nuln oil and earthshade wash. They are both very easy to do and way cheaper than buying a sundrop. Awesome video.
Only other piece of advice would be to spray them with a varnish when done. Washes are super thin and can be damaged pretty easy. If you choose to paint them later you can paint on top of the varnish just fine
Excellent tutorial Rob. I am always encouraging people to have a go at painting and this is a great introduction. I usually paint in more detail but have recently used a sundrop type effect with Ruination, saving the detail for the mercenaries. Easy to do and fairly foolproof, so great for beginners. Especially as the results will be such an improvement over plain grey?
I'm currently using gray primer, skeletal bone dry brushing over the mini and then strong tone over that, but the way you did it is even simpler. Gotta try this out once I get my hands on a white primer. Cheers. :)
A few of questions (and sorry if this has already been asked). What is you preferred primer? Do you varnish them after you paint them? Have you tried this with contrast/SpeedPaint or do they cover to much to look sundropped?
Hello, is it possible to give a bluish, greenish, reddish tint with this technique, if so, how to proceed? I would like to try with my miniatures of massive darkness 2 Thanks in advance for your reply
