      There are no statutes of limitation on murder, the most serious crime. Calling murder accidental suicide is a great injustice. They need to reopen the investigation. The book is full of religious people who are living in a fantasy form of religion. The positive whitewashes of life are a denial of reality.

    From Ireland, Just happened to stumble upon this podcast Nov 2022. Only 10 mins into talk. Remember reading years ago Thomas Merton's own account of his life.
    After his Father's death. His grandparents took him from London over to the States to live with them. The grandfather owned a popular Newspaper. So perhaps the young Thomas learned a lot about how media and politics operate behind the scenes. Just a thought.☘️

      Yes, it’s hard to accept the simple truth rather than look for demons, because we don’t want to believe that a good person can just die due to a sudden body failure (which happened a lot more often back then), or due to an accident. In this case, the simplest explanation is the most likely: that Fr. Merton died as the result of cardiac failure. There was no “crime scene,” therefore no investigation. Let the man rest.

    • @persephoneeleuthereus2325
      @persephoneeleuthereus2325 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Historian212 well you are right to a certain point, but I do know that Fr. John Hardon was an extremely knowledgeable man, with 37 years of formal education, with many degrees in theology, psychology, spirituality, demonology, sociology and so on. He was a very spiritual and rational person at same time. He was also a very holy and honest teacher, was trusted by everyone. He did not tolerate fools, had access to all of what was going on behind the scenes, in the political world as within the structures of the Catholic Church, he knew Merton personally, and that is why I truly believe in him, not irrationally, but because I know he knew. As a discreet person he never went into any details. But yes, may Fr Merton rest in peace.

    This is a very important topic to cover. The nature of Merton's death is of course very important in how we assess his life, and what we make of his writings and message. I first came across Merton and read through his autobiography very eagerly in the early 2000's, probably right around 9/11, maybe even before. Learning of how he supposedly died in a meaningless accident, however, really gave me pause about him and I never read much more of any of his books. I know he had a sort of personal crisis towards the end of his days and even had an affair and strayed from his vocation a bit, I believe? Then there was the matter of his antiwar activism -- I was much more 'conservative' in political ideology back then and viewed the Vietnam War in a less unfavorable light than I do now, less as an act of imperialist aggression and somewhat more as a noble, yet failed, cause in the Cold War. So I viewed that aspect of his work somewhat skeptically. I have to say, I found his pacifism and unwillingness to fight in the second world war -- our 'good war' and such a hallowed part of our national mythology -- hard to wrap my mind around and agree with. Again, that he ultimately died in a seemingly random accident on the other side of the world while at a Buddhist interfaith conference... all these things added up to form a somewhat murky picture in my judgment of Merton's actions towards the end of his life.
    Two decades later, however, as our interminable wars on 'terror' and national decline reveal the true imperialist aims of our government and its national security state, as the parallels between the Vietnam War and the post-9/11 wars, and the assassinations of the 60's become more and more obvious as to what they reveal, Merton's writings on war and violence now appear more obviously prophetic. If his activism provoked some sort of attention from an intelligence agency, his work and life are all the more vindicated.

She is the last and only reporter to interview Ruby after his trial and was found dead shortly thereafter.

    Edited - Great interview! Merton was clearly taken out for his anti-war position. Thailand uses only 220 volt electricity. They do not have 110 volt and 220 volt appliances like the US. It would be much easier to electrocute someone in Thailand than in the US. Thank you for this content! I'm going to get the both books on Merton and Forrestal.

      Most countries use 220 volts because it is a more efficient household current. 220 is not considered high-voltage but it can give you a good shock. Vacuum cleaners, toasters, fans, lamps, and other appliances are not lethal in other countries with 220 current. The 110 volts used in the USA is less efficient, but Americans have a long history of wasting energy with gas-guzzling cars.

      @@hughturley1062 - Great interview. It was deeply moving to learn about Merton's story. I've been to Thailand 3 times in the past three years and am fascinated by its people. There was a similar coverup in David Carradine's death in Bangkok where he was allegedly asphyxiated by hanging - which was the cover-up because the autopsy photos clearly reveal massive head trauma and bleeding. It was not a suicide and it was no accident. It affected me because I went to acting class with his daughter Kansas. So sad. We need more people like you and the host of the show to reveal the truth because our government clearly kills its people for profit. Remember Building Seven... Take care sir.

    Here's one that needs more investigation. Katie Lentz was trapped under her car in Missouri 2013. A man came out of nowhere, blessed her and the many rescue workers, saying everything was going to be alright, and then disappeared. It was national news TV and Print) and a police artist (composite) sketch of the "Miracle Angel" was in every story - there were multiple witnesses etc..
    Anyway, a few days or week later a Priest (in a follow-up) came out and said it was him. The artist sketch looked nothing like him, in fact it bore a striking resemblance to Thomas Merton! The story has been edited down - since the follow-up story revealing the Priest. The sketch is hard to find now ( ABC news I think shows a brief picture still). But still a lot of unanswered questions - like all the witnesses saying he appeared quickly from nowhere and vanished as quickly. Plus the Priest in the follow-up said he was on his way to Mass and stopped - but the original story said the hi way was blocked 1/4 mile in both directions and they had been cutting for a long time. Working so long that their cutters were getting dull. The "Angel" also said their cutters would start working and soon after a new crew showed up with sharp cutters.

    As a Buddhist and deep admirer of Thomas Merton I weep that such a wonderful man could have died in this way but you know they will always kill a manifestation of The Christ. Merton however is just fine (spiritually), but those who plotted to harm him are in deep shit. The law of Karma is irrefutable and the consequences of volitional action will manifest when all conditions ripen, in this this life, the one after that and the one after that. I wouldn't want to be them.

    • @veronica_._._._
      @veronica_._._._ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He wasnt "a manifestation of The Christ" it is a shame that you admire Merton and yet don't know that that kind of cultural appropriation of the central figure from creed you neither endorse or understand is Blasphemous!
      From the Catholic POV Karma and Reincarnation are heretical and part of the gnostic inversion.
      "No man can have 2 masters" is not a verse we can ever just step over.
      He had zero interest in the trappings of Buddhism but was somewhat naively exploring "techniques," that were "no longer used in the West", allegedly.
      Multiculturalism was the buzzword, Cultural Appropriation the antithesis, was in the future back then.
      Quote:
      He dialogued with a Zen Master after the completion of his The Wisdom of the Desert. Merton sent a copy to Suzuki with the hope that he would comment on Merton's view that the Desert Fathers and the early Zen masters had similar experiences. Nearly ten years later, when Zen and the Birds of Appetite was published, Merton wrote in his postface that "any attempt to handle Zen in theological language is bound to miss the point" calling his final statements "an example of how not to approach Zen." Merton struggled to reconcile the Western and Christian impulse to catalog and put into words every experience with the ideas of "Christian" apophatic theology and the inexplicable nature of the Zen experience.
      N.B. In keeping with his idea that non-Christian faiths had much to offer Christianity in experience and perspective and little or nothing in terms of doctrine,
      Merton distinguished between Zen Buddhism, an expression of history and culture, and "his Zen" What "Merton meant by Zen Buddhism" was taken from the the Chan version only that began in China and spread to Japan and became Zen, as well as the rituals and institutions that accompanied it" unquote.
      Endless Research as a form of procrastination may have made him vulnerable to forgetting his vows?
      Practice is Our Amor of God. Practice.
      His constant restlessness and dissatisfaction led to his dying "a long way from home" on many levels, and that is very poignant.
      A lifetime of searching, and yet, God was solidly behind him all the time.

    "The reaction of the monastery is not good." While staying at Gethsemani as a visiting Gyrovague/Postulant I listened to innumerable criticisms from other visiting Catholic lay and clergy how the monks should respond on various subjects and world events, and how they should change to accommodate modern culture. Out of reverence and respect for the Trappist monastic tradition I cannot comment on conversations I've had with some of the monks. However, I can remind Hugh Turley and the like that how monks, under Holy Orders, manage their community is as much their own private concern as how a couple, united in Christ through the Sacrament of Matrimony, handle their own private lives.

    So, your take is that it was the CIA that murdered Fr. Louis because of his anti-war writings? That makes sense. For a while, I was suspecting that it could have been the Vatican. Merton was among the first Catholic authors to recognize and celebrate the spiritual wisdom of some of the Asian religions, an idea that was not acceptable, at least not when I was a child, when it was taught that Catholicism was the only true religion and following other religions could end you up in hell! I think pioneers like Merton and other features of aggiornamento have produced a kind of civil war in the church, but are necessary if Catholicism is to survive in a world that is making the old worldview look more and more untenable. But then again, the stance of Gethsemani Abbey makes me wonder if my initial suspicion might not be so far off.

    Look at the correspondence between Thomas Merton and Ernesto Cardenal. Cardenal had been a monk at Getsemani and had left the abbey to join the struggle against the dictatorship of Somoza in Nicaragua. Merton and Cardenal had talked about the foundation of a new community in the island of Solantiname in Nicaragua. The CIA and the abbey probably had another motive to kill Merton because of his association with Cardenal and their struggle for justice and peace around the world.

    2 reasons why he may have been "offed", (murdered) 1. was that he was about to publish against the Vietnam War, and THAT would have been far too much for the Johnson Administration, as Merton was a FAR too important Catholic writer. It would have had a HUGE impact on US Catholics, in a negative way. 2. Another thing I recently discovered is that Merton had written a piece against the French obtaining the nuclear bomb at the time. Gethsemane submitted it to the Abbott General (in France), (was it Gabriel Sortais OCSO) for permission to publish, who absolutely forbad they publish it. The Abbott General WAS in favor of the additional French power, being from an upper-class French family, and knew Merton might try to evade his authority, as his recent (at the time) affair with the famous "M" (the nurse from Louisville), and may even at the time been thinking of leaving his order. Merton had decided before Bangkok to not leave the monastery, and break off his affair. (Best article about it is in the Irish Times, and in the book "Beneath the Mask of Holiness". I used to think it was certainly the US secret services that did it, based on orders from the Johnson Admin .... now I think was the French intelligence service. It would explain how the Fr. de Guerre got involved, who was a "plant" in his monastery.

I always thought that, beside the physical cause, God took him, like, that's enough, you've done your job here on earth. • @davidmartin7889
      @davidmartin7889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I take a stab at an answer in the article, "Seth Rich Equals Vince Foster?" at dcdave.com/article5/170525.htm. Here's a quote from the article: "In Rich’s case, by contrast [with Foster], you can start with the motive, which almost screams out at you. He is strongly suspected of being the source of the leaks of the DNC emails to Wikileaks that supposedly did so much damage to the Hillary Clinton campaign. Wikileaks has even published an email from campaign manager John Podesta that says, 'I’m definitely for making an example of a suspected leaker whether or not we have any real basis for it.' That might explain why nothing was taken from Rich in the 'botched robbery.' If you make the murder look too much like it was simply the byproduct of a garden-variety street crime, the intended message would not be sent. That might explain as well why no money was taken from the Starbucks cash registers in the Caity Mahoney killing."

    This is my first time seeing this channel. It is fascinating to watch the body language of the man being interviewed, and who has written a book.... it seems astonishing to me to be led to thinking that this author is quite disapproving that the interviewer actually got to get a copy of his book, AND that this guy, Turley, is openly disgusted that Fr Charles McCarthy would have anything to do with getting this book known to the interviewer. So, at this viewing, I have not listened to the rest of this interview, but, already, I am extremely prejudiced against Turley...... far from either gracious or trustworthy, in my opinion... just my opinion at this early point. Nothing to see here. Very likely Merton took a shower, it's extremely hot and sweaty in Bangkok. Cold showers are an absolute necessity. Also the electrics in Asia are notoriously bad and the fan would have had a metal frame. With or without a shower he would have been wet, if not with water then with perspiration. A fall would very likely result in a head injury. With only sheet dividers an intruder would have easily been heard or seen. The showers in those days would not have been noisy power showers but just a fine quiet spray iif not a trickle. This is just a very bad conspiracy theory. Thailand and the Thai people are wonderful. If Fr. Louis retained his Faith to the end, and was assassinated, then he is a martyr of the Church. His later writings, however, significantly veered from the Faith. Therefore, if he was a heretic at his death, it was merely murder, not martyrdom. As Henry VI I I early on was considered a Defender of the Faith, yet died outside the Church, the possibility remains with Merton. He was educated enough to know better, yet seemed caught up in the many revolutions of his time. Since he began as a secular protestant (at best), it seems he reverted back to liberalism at the end, falling outside the Church and therefore outside any cause for sainthood. The death (and place of burial) of Archbishop Thuc of Vietnam is also shrouded in mystery. Catholics absolutely need to know what makes Sacraments licit and valid, so all these things are intertwined and very necessary for Salvation. Thank you for bringing this to the attention of Catholics, but as traditionalists know, much more knowledge is still needed to be in Truth, as God wills for us.

    • @catholicsagainstmilitarism
      @catholicsagainstmilitarism  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      What is your support for this idea that he "veered from the faith"? Do you have any of his writings, specifically, to support that (primary sources)? If so, I would be interested in hearing about it / reading it.

    • @michellefarris3961
      @michellefarris3961 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are free to do their research. His early writings are very orthodox, but his later ones are full of modernism. Very disappointing. Many start well but end badly. It appears it happened to Fr. Louis (Merton)

    • @catholicsagainstmilitarism
      @catholicsagainstmilitarism  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't think it's right to say that someone veered from the faith unless you have something to back it up.

    • @michellefarris3961
      @michellefarris3961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His writings back it up. He basically went from Catholic to modernist. Once someone becomes heretical, they are no longer members of the Church. It's very sad, but obvious in his writings. You will have to do your own research. I tried to collect all his works, but lost everything a few years ago. Therefore, I cannot easily pull things off a shelf to quote for you. The Church has doctrinal standards, and once someone leaves the safe ground of Faith, their writings may have only a whiff of heresy, or a stench, as it is commonly described. I will not give an opinion on where Fr. Merton's later ones fell on the spectrum. I will just say that I was disappointed by it, as are many other Catholics.

    • @catholicsagainstmilitarism
      @catholicsagainstmilitarism  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10
