Episode 99: Speakers at the 50th Anniversary Gathering of the Notre Dame 10
On November 18, 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War, a group of Notre Dame students protested the presence of Central Intelligence Agency and DAO (Defense Attache Office, Saigon) on campus. At the time, Fr. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy was a professor in the literature department; he had also founded and was the Director of The Program for the Study and Practice of Nonviolent Conflict Resolution. Ten of the students got expelled. Fr. McCarthy ended up resigning, to show solidarity with the students.
On the 50th anniversary in 2019, Fr. McCarthy and four of the former students reunited to tell the story of what happened that day, why it happened, and how it has affected their lives, as well as the ripple effects it has sent through the institution of the University of Notre Dame. Episode 98 features their discussion, and Episode 99 features the speeches that were given that day.
The gatherings that have been happening at Notre Dame every 10 years on the anniversary of the protests resulted in the first ever memorial to Conscientious Objectors on a Catholic campus in the United States being erected on the Notre Dame campus, across from the famous grotto.

The great Kent Hovind on literal 6-Day Creation that the Church dogmatically teaches will not consider geocentrism despite modern university textbooks admitting both are equally unfalsifiable. I asked him in person and he said, "The science is settled on heliocentrism." HE was baffled.

So, according to Mr. Jones' logic, because the CIA was giving money to Father Peyton's rosary crusade the rosary is fake just like Medjugorje. The fruits of Medjugorje have been enormous in terms of conversions, healings and religious vocations. You judge a tree by its fruit. Read Medjugorje seer Mirjana Soldo's 2017 book 'My Heart Will Triumph' against the backdrop of Mr. Jones' book about Medjugorje and judge for yourself.

POP QUIZ! Is "to preserve their way of life" a jus ad bellum according to the Catholic Just Defense doctrine?

    • @a.m.8410
      @a.m.8410 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

While it's a very broad question for the sake of satisfying a question being answered with a "yes or no" - yes. 1) Just cause: If a people is in a position to preserve their way of life, it's reasonable to assume that innocent life is in danger or going to be if nothing is done. 2) Legitimate authority: So long as the elected government deliberates and begins the war then (assuming it truly represents the interest of the people) 3) Right intention: Preventing a civilization, or a culture, or an entire people from being wiped out certainly is a "right intention" 4) Probability of success, last resort, and proportionality: As long as these criteria are properly adhered to then again, I believe it would still be inline with Just Defense Doctrine.

9:25 Something that came to mind recently is that, based on what we know about reproduction and cell-division, the miracle in question essentially comes down to one missing cell. People think of it as a gigantically implausible event, but looking at it from a secular standpoint, the thing missing in the Conception story is something microscopic-a single male gamete. Not that this diminishes the miracle, but it’s really trippy to think about. Not to mention, the improbable genius required to coin such a ‘myth’ before knowing any of the science (or theology) here.

@@catholicsagainstmilitarism Thanks for your reply. It was a nice stream to watch and Ellen is a wonderful host who gets the best out of her guests. I watched the full version but I cannot find EMJs comment about the 11th September event. Was it cut? I do not like the conspiracy theories but people refer to the "Inside Job" claim, as if that is an acceptable position but it is not. Extraordinary claims, require extraordinary evidence. It was Bin Laden who had the means, the opportunity and the motive for that world changing event. I like EMJ a lot, I wonder how much real research he has done on the crime? 1000s of books have been written about the JFK assassination, many of them are conspiracy theories. I encourage people to read Gerald Posner's 'Case Closed', where he debunks all of the conspiracies and provides clear evidence that as with Bin Laden, it was Oswald who had the means, motive an opportunity to commit the crime. Nobody else was involved.

Jason is calm and cool and seems nice and intelligent. Take the following comments with a grain of salt as I'm sure I'm biased. I got an apologist vibe from Jason which to me is more about "selling" a perspective as opposed to digging alongside someone for truth. But maybe that was the point of this discussion. Any cause can employ a well-spoken convincing apologist who can logically "win" debates and such but does that make the cause itself "good"? Who's to say? That's where we are to go to the Gospels, I suppose. I'm not saying this is how I see Jason and I don't mean any disrespect to him but this conversation made me think of an analogy. Imagine you're invited to an elegant dinner at a nice estate. You show up and are greeted by a well dressed and well educated host who sits you down at the table. The lid is lifted off your entree and you find a small bloody pile of human remains in front of you. The host continues chatting pleasantly while having little bites of his portion of the dinner. Finally, perhaps an accurate illustration for our relationship to war and violence is a person calling a shark in the ocean his pet simply because he was able to attach a collar to it.

Good civil discussion, though troubling.. What sprang to my mind was Jesus' teaching of turning the other cheek. Once war gets started , it is impossible to keep things Christlike. If we treated each other with respect to start with, not fester hate with unjust laws and persecution , it would go far to promote peace. Unspoken was the financial gain of the military industrial complex (MIC) and all its players, that want war at any cost . Average people are goaded , riled up to hate and fight. When Jason expressed the view that to minimize casualties and a long war, it's probably best to go in big early, assert dominance and superiority ,it could be interpreted as "nuke 'm." Thankfully the MIC wouldn't want that , as it is not profitable.

Thank you for you comment. Good points. I wish I had brought up another point during the interview. I think Jason said something like, "Israel has a right to defend itself and if you want them to stop what they are doing, are you prepared to go use violence against them to stop them?" I should have pointed out that a first step does not have to be violence in this case but could be simply the decision to stop supporting them, financially and militarily. But then that raises the issue of money in politics and who our politicians are owned by, special interests, etc.

The description of this video captures your rebellious spirit well. It is charitable and thoughtful to point out that your perspective is “outside the Catholic teaching on war” (C.C.C. 2309) and that “the opining of the Catholic Just Warists” happens to be the normative teaching of the Catholic Church. This opining is treated with a maturity that the revolutionary nonviolence fundamentalists are deceived into believing they don’t lack. Looking forward to this interview. “Worldly wisdom” is a contradiction in terms but I have appreciated every Veteran interview you’ve had thus far. I will continue to thoughtfully engage with your thought provoking content.👍🙏👍

      1) I do not know if I agree with your description of my spirit. Depends on what you think I'm rebelling against. It is unclear. 2) I did not say that my perspective comes from outside Catholic teaching. I said Jason's does. He is not Catholic. 3) I received your email and I am not offended by any of your comments on this channel. I appreciate the engagement and that you have found something of value here, even if you don't agree with me (or Fr. McCarthy) completely. I agree that "iron sharpens iron"! However, part of the reason I cannot respond to many of your comments, besides the length of them, the number of things you bring up, and my own lack of time, is that you tend to characterize the statements of Fr. McCarthy instead of arguing with them. Or you call me names ("nonviolent fundamentalist") instead of addressing something I've said. If you believe that something he or I have said contradicts Church teaching, it is up to you to make that argument. I cannot respond to an argument that has not been made, and many of your arguments are a stream of labels and characterizations. I cannot respond to that because it would take us too far off track. I would recommend listening to Episode 96 starting at the 47:30 minute mark. Specifically at the 1:03:00 mark I address David's point about critiques of Fr. McCarthy that have been made (by you and others) and claims that he is somehow outside the bounds of Catholic teaching. He isn't and his claims and teachings are not. Gospel Nonviolence is found all throughout the Gospels. Just War Theory is a philosophy based on human reasoning. It cannot be attributed to anything Jesus ever said or did. God bless you and I hope we can dialogue further on this.

    • @abidethefire

@@catholicsagainstmilitarism 1) “the opining of the Catholic Just Warists” is rebellious towards the normative teaching of the Catholic Church. 2) I do say that your perspective comes from outside Catholic teaching (C.C.C. #2309) 3) Perhaps your characterization of my comments is not honest? My characterization of nonviolence fundamentalist statements are not for rhetorical effect. The characterizations of the arguments that I do argue with should not be out of bounds. Father McCarthy and you yourself do that as well, so it is curious that you raise an objection to that. So be it… You are either being dishonest with yourself or with me about there being no argument or citation made. So be it… The length of my comment is reflective of the care I have for this topic. I do not casually address this subject and the terms I use are deliberate. My words are intended for their actual meaning. The labels are used for precision until they may be replaced with more precise labels. Nonviolence fundamentalist is an accurate term but if you disagree with the argument I’ve made for the use of that term then I would be interested to hear your argument against it. How exactly are you not a fundamentalist concerning nonviolence? What is the circumstance that you would acknowledge the possibility for violence to be acceptable? Do you accept the circumstances that Church teaches may be acceptable for acts of violence or do you rebel against such teachings and call those who opine about them “Just Warists”? You imply that you’re against labels but you yourself have no problem referring to people as “Catholic Just Warists.” So be it... Many of the comments I made have been scrubbed so they cannot be accessed for others to review to judge for themselves if your portrayal of my arguments is correct. I think you have presented a poor characterization of my arguments but if you choose to dismiss them then so be it. I have written an essay, “Let All That Hate Thee, Flee From Before Thy Face” with many of those same arguments and citations that were posted on your channel and eventually deleted. The essay is long, and labels are used appropriate to the arguments that are made. I shared the link to that essay, but that comment was deleted. So be it. I did view your interview with David Gray and offered my response to that in the comment section of the Saint Dominic’s Media channel, but that comment was deleted. In short, I encourage anyone to watch 3 random Father McCarthy videos along with CAM episode 5 What About Joan of Arc? and cite his strongest expressions of love and fidelity for Holy Mother Church. Regarding episode 5 What About Joan of Arc... you and Father McCarthy suggest that Saint Joan of Arc may have been guided by the demonic. Father McCarthy thinks that there is no reliable historical evidence concerning Saint Joan of Arc but he is confident that she was a murdering, ignorant, delusional enemy of Christ, with a malformed conscience that barely manages to slip into the Church Triumphant. Father McCarthy acknowledges Saint Joan’s canonization but claims that Saint Katherine of Alexandria never existed based on a conspiracy theory of his that ignores many relevant facts that support the veneration of Saint Katherine. Father McCarthy is dissatisfied with the Council of Nicaea because it belongs to the “Constantine altered” Christian Church. Father McCarthy declares that the luminous mysteries of the holy rosary are “unacceptable” and that, as “a traditionalist”, the holy rosary should only be prayed with the mysteries that were given to Saint Dominic… This is a rebellious spirit that is antiCatholic. I will make a point to record and post that essay I wrote within this month. Until then it can be accessed on the blog page of my website. I will be happy to continue the dialogue. Hopefully you will as well. *Please note that I will email this comment to you so that I can maintain a record of these thoughts if they happen to be deleted from your comment section.

I would recommend listening to timestamp 47:30 in Episode 96 (the one before this one). There are different levels of acceptance and certainty when it comes to Church teachings. Also, Fr. McCarthy has been a priest in good standing with the Catholic Church for over 40 years. That would certainly not be the case if what he was saying (and has been saying for 60 years) was antiCatholic. Finally, I have never deleted any of your comments. If you are posting links, TH-cam might be doing that automatically but I am not doing that. God bless.

@@catholicsagainstmilitarism I recognize that you are not deleting comments but comments have been deleted by YT and I must take that into account if I want to maintain a record of thought. I occasionally use the excel use of comments as part of my writing process for larger projects… Being a priest in good standing does not make Father McCarthy a trustworthy teacher. I have cited examples of his antiCatholic teachings in my comments and in my essay. I have presented my argument which I have not bothered to address but instead have characterized it as without substance. I must assume that you do not think it is antiCatholic to refer to the Church that has continued to exist after Constantine as “Constantine-altered” or “Constantinian Christianity.” I must conclude that you do not recognize all the objections I’ve raised to your What about Joan of Arc? episode are not objections to antiCatholic sentiments. I could continue but want to work on shortening my comments so that the length of them does not deter you from addressing them. No need to refer me to the same episode that relies on an argument from silence. Whether the Church has reprimanded Father McCarthy for his antiCatholic teachings or not does not change the fact that he repeatedly makes antiCatholic statements identical to those of antiCatholic Protestants. I have cited those statements and you continue to avoid replying to those citations. So be it. If you don’t want to address those citations then please present a quote to me of Father McCarthy that expresses love and fidelity for Holy Mother Church. I will be pleasantly surprised if such a quote can be found.

@@catholicsagainstmilitarism Regarding the time stamp, I don’t think you realize that we have more common ground on Christian nonviolence. I agree with much of your position regarding peace and non-violence. I don’t agree with the disposition of rebellion against the Church and the inaccurate portrayal of Church history. So be it. I will continue to offer my perspective which is also in good standing with the Church. If ever you are willing to discuss this with a respectful conversation then I am willing to have that conversation publicly or privately. Otherwise, the YT exchange will suffice.

I think if you titled your channel "Turning to Satan" you would get preferential treatment from the algorithm. Every time I look at Catholic videos I am inundated with recommendations for atheist channels. I have rarely if ever been recommended one of yours unless I persistently watch. Google has been a partner of the CIA since 2004 when the company bought Keyhole which later became Google Earth. In 2010 Google also made a joint investment with In-Q-Tel (the CIA's investment arm) in a company called Recorded Future - which was developing tech involving the analysis of social media to predict - Minority Report style - future criminals.

Ellen after following you on CAM podcasts a couple years, being convicted to believe Gospel Non-violence by the presentations of Fr. MCarthy, and by a letter you read of an American Catholic soldier to his father, this interview was great because I got to know you more. I had not picked you up on Rumble so did not know about your satirical side - until I caught the Acts of the Apostles short on YT just earlier today. Your conviction for actually following Our Lord as He revealed Himself and His Teaching/Commandments in the Gospels is where I want to be. Thank you for following His Call on your life in evangelizing The Church - and for caring so much for children's education and their families. Pax Christi

Hi Ellen, great interview, really encapsulates your unique work. If I were rich I would fund this work bigtime! Your work really makes me think. And your humour is brilliant, you are a natural and very mischievous comedy actress. All good wishes.

If there is one thing that all members of the socio-politico elite share in common, it is their belief there are too many people in this world and that something must be done about it!
