Khanyisa is tired and needs a nap so Timisa and Lundi come to check her and realize she's just napping so they stand guard. It's comical how Khanyisa pulls grass and eats while napping. I just love watching these beautiful creatures and during the Covid lockdown they were a great source of comfort to me and my family. There's no better guardian and protector of Khanyisa than Kumbura. She seems to sense all and is constantly monitoring Khanyisa's every move as if she had some kind of ESP. And with Lundi, the calm adoptive mom who doesn't seem to get bent out of shape because she knows elephant behaviours and when not to panic, and gorgeous little Timisa who has grown so much closer to Khanyisa and Bubi and Klaserie and Limpopo, and even Setombe.... they all love little Khanyisa and Pisa and Timisa. I was wondering if maybe Mambo's behaviour as of late ...could be a little jealousy of mom Lundi's attention towards Khanyisa. But I'm just a novice learning about elephant behaviour and their psyche. I find them fascinating. Adine and all the carers are just the greatest. Blessings from Chicago to South Africa with love. Our little pink princess is wanting to take a nap but Timisa thinks Khaynisa should be up. For only being about 6 (and still a baby herself) Timisa is looking after Khaynisa. Little miss Sunshine is still a baby and sometime she needs to have a little nap but it makes her groupies anxious and they run right away to see if everything is fine Kumbura, Lundi and even our little Timisa were very concerned and it was really watching over Khanyisa So amazing that those gentle giants do not even step on our pink baby and so heartwarming to see the female's concern Bubi also not too far from our Khanisa Braveheart 👏🐘❤🥰
I love how Khanyisa thought, " Yup, this looks like a good spot for a nap." and plopped herself down for a snack and a snooze. Or is it a snooze and a snack? Hi first time watching HERD , This is amazing Elephants are so gentle and protective of each other love watching this. Just imagine how these Elephants lives have changed , they can feel free to take a nap , walk around with out fear and little Khanyisa has shown how free and safe they feel.

Aaaah-ha! So those of us who picked Lundi in the TH-cam post yesterday were right. But did anyone figure out that it was Timisa with Khanyisa & Lundi in that picture? I didn't. I was quite sure it was Bubi. Just goes to show you that we would all need to pick out each elephants little differences a lot more if we were to ever work with them or become carers. And I'm sure that would happen over time with time spent daily working with them.
Timisa’s overt attempts to get Khanyisa to go ahead and get up all the way. 17:50, she knocks K with her right elbow. K responds by knocking her back with her head. Timisa moves on to trunk-touch K’s side, trunk-touch her foot, nudge with right leg. Finally, K has had enough of the pressure and aptly expresses it, lol. And, don’t step on my ears! Our little girl isn’t a pushover, that’s for sure. *At 9:59, I saw a body language cue I hadn’t seen elephants do before and (another) one that humans also use. As Lundi moves in between Kumbura and Khanyisa, she does a “move away” to Kumbura with her head (accompanied by a huff). I’ll never get tired of watching and learning about these tremendously awesome, complex beings.
I absolutely know that what you are doing is so much more complicated than adding a baby elephant to some adult elephants and letting them get on with it. What you are doing is incredible. So compassionate, thoughtful, scientific, collective, resourceful and ultimately a huge gesture of love on our planet. Me too! I so wish somehow it could have turned out differently. I can’t imagine how people who care for these elephants daily can still go on after losing one of these incredible creatures.
It looked like little Timi wasn't comfortable with Khanyisa lying there so long but Lundi seemed ok with it. They weren't about to leave her there in that position, that is beautiful to see. It was sweet the way Khanyisa pushed on Timi and Lundi with her foot. Wonderful video.
I love how Khanyisa is more comfortable than everyone, sleeping laying down. But it's how she just plops down like, "That's it. Can't walk another step, I'm out, boom, lie down". Everyone else is cautious, on guard or just, "I'll stay upright, for now". Not Khanyisa. When she says sleep, it's sleep.

The HERD elephants all seem to share the things pointed out here: the knowledge of where they all are and what they are doing, even if, as you say, "they don't understand why Khanyisa is sleeping". And their precise, so-careful footwork is always atonishing for such big animals! Their first priority is to care for and protect the more vulnerable members. What a suberb, liberal welfare state!! Years ago I read that when the herd is out and about and a baby decides to take a nap, the whole herd stops and waits until baby is ready to go again. Now I have seen something similar. As soon as Khanyisa drops to the ground, Lundy and Timisa rush over to stand guard over her. They both were keeping an eye on her. So caring and protective of the young. Heart-warming.
I love how Khanyisa gave her big sister a whack with her trunk for every time she stepped on her ear and then they peacefully stood side by side and grazed. That’s a real family!😂
I was going to say the same. Little Meisiekind let Timi have it with her trunk when she got up. Typical sisters, a few whacks with her trunk shows just how Khanyisa has fit in perfectly with her family.
The second you coughed, Adine, Kumbura came to check up you! She amazes the most of all of these elephants! So young yet so observant and always responsible. A great allomother! I can easily see her as matriarch at some point in the future!
WOW! I am speechless but I had scare when I saw Timisa step on her ear. It takes many elephants to raise a baby ele. but caring carers to watch over, just in case.

Khanysia was definitely tired, and Kumbura was very concerned at first because how she laid down and continued to lay there. There seems to be portions of Kumbura tusks that have fallen off. Then Timi comes in, and the reaction is the same, concerned for Khanysia. They amaze me. Humans seeing someone on a sidewalk laying on a street , 90% of us keep walking and never pause to help the obvious human on a streetwalk. We humans look in awe at such empathy, because in general we lack it in our own species. Khanysia is very vulnerable laying out in the open like this, but both Kumbura & Timi are reacting like...we don't like this, is she OK, if so, let's get her up...

Oh boy, did anyone notice how Tamisa stepped on Khanyisa's ear?? Ouch! Then Tamisa must of realized and got off and pushed Khanyisa's ear up. Glad to see Tamisa has learned how to protect younger elephants. She's growing up for sure.
For goodness sake, I just want to take a nap & you won’t let me!! 😁 Timisa is the most worried about Khanyisa, I think. She relaxed when Lundi came around. Funny Khanyisa was eating grass while still lying down! Maybe It was to recuperate strength. 💖🐘
I can't tell if Timisa is protecting Khanyisa or making it into a game of how many times can I step over a lying body, maybe an elephant version of hot lava. 😃
What potential dangers are there in that area? Lions? Rhinos? Buffalo? Adine and the carers go out into the bush with the elephants. No one’s carrying a weapon if a lion or buffalo were to suddenly appear. How do the humans protect themselves! Would Kumbura or Tokwe come to the rescue?
Khanyisa has all the hall marks of a tired, grumpy, & hungry toddler that wants to eat and nap at the same time. It is too cute when she has her little head thrash when they made her stand up. Her little toddler "I am not happy about this! You stepped on my EAR!" moment. I bet if it was a hot day the ground must have felt cool where she was pulling up grass and the soil was exposed. Timisa is the tween trying to help who just walked off like "MOM Khanyisa is embarrassing me again!" And Lundi is the mom coming in like "Look! Nap time is over kid! GET UP NOW! FUSS ALL YOU WANT, BUT YOU WILL GET UP!"

I think Timisa is just ensuring that she is protected. By standing over her, she also acts as a sun shield. It is odd to see Khanyisa so tired as she is normally a bundle of energy. Possibly getting ready for her next growth spurt?
When you think that they don't have particularly good rearward vision and 90% of the body is behind them, their ability to reverse in a tight area and not tread on each other puts some (actually most) car drivers with all their gizmos like mirrors and parking sensors to shame. The spatial awareness is amazing. Well, apart from standing on the occasional ear, so I'll just lift it up and push it out of the way with my foot.
Hi from Pacific Palisades, California!! I watch baby Khanysia daily. My 14 year old kitty enjoys watching the herd as well. Today's nap concerned my kitty as well....She is half Siamese/ half Calico...but really all Siamese...very intelligent. You are part of our morning routine. Khanysia has come a long way, beautiful Mother and family to care for her. For how tragic her beginning she's in such a happy place, thriving!! I am amazed how this herd figured out how injured Khanysia was... Elephants have a big ❤️

Timisa’s overt attempts to get Khanyisa to go ahead and get up all the way. 17:50, she knocks K with her right elbow. K responds by knocking her back with her head. Timisa moves on to trunk-touch K’s side, trunk-touch her foot, nudge with right leg. Finally, K has had enough of the pressure and aptly expresses it, lol. And, don’t step on my ears! Our little girl isn’t a pushover, that’s for sure.
*At 9:59, I saw a body language cue I hadn’t seen elephants do before and (another) one that humans also use. As Lundi moves in between Kumbura and Khanyisa, she does a “move away” to Kumbura with her head (accompanied by a huff). I’ll never get tired of watching and learning about these tremendously awesome, complex beings.
Kumbura came running over seconds after Khanyisa went down like she sensed it rather than saw it.

I absolutely know that what you are doing is so much more complicated than adding a baby elephant to some adult elephants and letting them get on with it.
What you are doing is incredible. So compassionate, thoughtful, scientific, collective, resourceful and ultimately a huge gesture of love on our planet.

It looked like little Timi wasn't comfortable with Khanyisa lying there so long but Lundi seemed ok with it. They weren't about to leave her there in that position, that is beautiful to see. It was sweet the way Khanyisa pushed on Timi and Lundi with her foot. Wonderful video.

I love how Khanyisa is more comfortable than everyone, sleeping laying down. But it's how she just plops down like, "That's it. Can't walk another step, I'm out, boom, lie down". Everyone else is cautious, on guard or just, "I'll stay upright, for now". Not Khanyisa. When she says sleep, it's sleep.

The HERD elephants all seem to share the things pointed out here: the knowledge of where they all are and what they are doing, even if, as you say, "they don't understand why Khanyisa is sleeping". And their precise, so-careful footwork is always atonishing for such big animals! Their first priority is to care for and protect the more vulnerable members. What a suberb, liberal welfare state!!

Years ago I read that when the herd is out and about and a baby decides to take a nap, the whole herd stops and waits until baby is ready to go again. Now I have seen something similar. As soon as Khanyisa drops to the ground, Lundy and Timisa rush over to stand guard over her. They both were keeping an eye on her. So caring and protective of the young. Heart-warming.

I love how Khanyisa gave her big sister a whack with her trunk for every time she stepped on her ear and then they peacefully stood side by side and grazed. That’s a real family!😂
I noticed that too. She really whacked her with her trunk. It made me laugh.
I was going to say the same. Little Meisiekind let Timi have it with her trunk when she got up. Typical sisters, a few whacks with her trunk shows just how Khanyisa has fit in perfectly with her family.

The second you coughed, Adine, Kumbura came to check up you! She amazes the most of all of these elephants! So young yet so observant and always responsible. A great allomother! I can easily see her as matriarch at some point in the future!
WOW! I am speechless but I had scare when I saw Timisa step on her ear. It takes many elephants to raise a baby ele. but caring carers to watch over, just in case.
Timisa really loves her baby sister, i have such joy watching Timi protecting her baby sis she couldnt even be without one another growing up together, what an absolute precious giant people elephants are so so beautiful, thank you for showing us this
Khanysia was definitely tired, and Kumbura was very concerned at first because how she laid down and continued to lay there. There seems to be portions of Kumbura tusks that have fallen off. Then Timi comes in, and the reaction is the same, concerned for Khanysia. They amaze me. Humans seeing someone on a sidewalk laying on a street , 90% of us keep walking and never pause to help the obvious human on a streetwalk.
We humans look in awe at such empathy, because in general we lack it in our own species.
Khanysia is very vulnerable laying out in the open like this, but both Kumbura & Timi are reacting like...we don't like this, is she OK, if so, let's get her up...

What potential dangers are there in that area? Lions? Rhinos? Buffalo? Adine and the carers go out into the bush with the elephants. No one’s carrying a weapon if a lion or buffalo were to suddenly appear. How do the humans protect themselves! Would Kumbura or Tokwe come to the rescue?
Khanyisa has all the hall marks of a tired, grumpy, & hungry toddler that wants to eat and nap at the same time. It is too cute when she has her little head thrash when they made her stand up. Her little toddler "I am not happy about this! You stepped on my EAR!" moment. I bet if it was a hot day the ground must have felt cool where she was pulling up grass and the soil was exposed.
Timisa is the tween trying to help who just walked off like "MOM Khanyisa is embarrassing me again!"
And Lundi is the mom coming in like "Look! Nap time is over kid! GET UP NOW! FUSS ALL YOU WANT, BUT YOU WILL GET UP!"

I think Timisa is just ensuring that she is protected. By standing over her, she also acts as a sun shield. It is odd to see Khanyisa so tired as she is normally a bundle of energy. Possibly getting ready for her next growth spurt?

When you think that they don't have particularly good rearward vision and 90% of the body is behind them, their ability to reverse in a tight area and not tread on each other puts some (actually most) car drivers with all their gizmos like mirrors and parking sensors to shame. The spatial awareness is amazing. Well, apart from standing on the occasional ear, so I'll just lift it up and push it out of the way with my foot.
Hi from Pacific Palisades, California!! I watch baby Khanysia daily. My 14 year old kitty enjoys watching the herd as well. Today's nap concerned my kitty as well....She is half Siamese/ half Calico...but really all Siamese...very intelligent. You are part of our morning routine. Khanysia has come a long way, beautiful Mother and family to care for her. For how tragic her beginning she's in such a happy place, thriving!! I am amazed how this herd figured out how injured Khanysia was... Elephants have a big ❤️
