I was just about to say this and wondered if others knew this too. Once fish stop eating, things could easily go downhill from there. Their immune systems weaken and all the diseases they are prone to but could naturally avoid when healthy begin to affect them. We should list out some first aid products all fish enthusiasts need to own.

yeah, the girl knows what she's doing, definitely. This brings us back to a whole discussion about human beings thinking that a 2-5 years lifespan animal is not worth to save, as they breed fast, blablabla
I've had a lot of fishes in my life, and I can say 100% certain that they are underestimated. Specially Bettas, forced to live in a 0.2 gallon cup

I did freshwater fish tanks for years. Some fish don't want anything but live food. The problem is that the live food you get at the pet store is very often contaminated. So you end up making the water you work so hard to take care of a deadly trap.
It's of course much more difficult but you really should breed your own live food.
I'll tell you, when you raise a Black Arrawana from a hatchling to 24 inches long and lose it from bad go fish it really sucks.

This story really means a lot to me.
In where I come from, Betta fishes are usually easily obtained, even as prizes at nightmarket games.
So once they're bad shaped or ill, people tend to throw them into sewer, or leave them suffer in trash cans. Cus why bother all the effort and time? Why not get yourself a new one? They're cheaper then one bottle of Coca-cola. Your local vet probably would say the same thing anyway.

Domestic bettas belong in the wild as much as domesticated dogs do.... Bettas have been domesticated for over 150 years, which is an incredibly long time for a species that can produce up to about 3 generations in one year (at least 450 generations of extensive domestication). Domestic bettas, also unlike most fish, genuinely seek out human attention and are exceptionally trainable. They are also capable of recognizing and bonding to specific people. They absolutely require humans to thrive at this point, which only makes the horrific levels of abuse worse... Domestic bettas ligitimately want to please and play with thier owners, yet people treat them like worthless, retarded peices trash. It angers me... Truly give a betta a true chance to show thier intelligence, and they will give you 10x back. They're truly special creatures.

I’ve also recently adopted a sickly betta fish. His gills are damaged from ammonia poisoning, I don’t think they ever changed out the water in the cup he was in. It made me very disturbed to see him on the bottom gasping for air at the bottom of the cup. He got very skinny from not eating. He looked ready to give up on life. He’s now in his own 5 gallon aquarium. I test his water daily and I’m treating him with aquarium salt. He’s finally started moving around, and I’ve been feeding him live brine shrimp and insect larvae flakes. His gills are still damaged but he’s overall looking better. He’s now swimming around and interacting with things in the tank. I may do some research to see if he needs some antibiotics. There is just one side of his gills that sticks out very far, and I can’t tell if it’s a genetic mutation or if he needs antibiotics. He’s not acting sickly anymore but I just want to be sure he won’t have any future complications. His tank is on my office desk, I work from home so I can always look over and check on him.
My husband named him Phoenix, he said I helped this betta rise from ashes like a phoenix 😆. He’s also a bit shy and will hide under a tiny wooden branch I bought gave when he gets nervous. I think that is standard behavior with rescues. But he likes to peep out 👀 to check on me while I work.

So glad you brought Phoenix home. Great name. I adore fish. Bettas are a favorite. I have also rescued quite a few of them. They have so much personality. I make sure they have a buddy to see through the glass/plastic for a time during the day, as they are quite social. Boy Bettas can't be together in the same tank but can visit each other through the glass for awhile each day, depending on how well they 'visit' through the glass. They like plants and snails too. Also, fish need sleep time like we do so it is lights out for them too.
I love seeing stories like this. Bettas are such beautiful amazing souls. So glad you shared your story! USA

I got a plan last year:
      1. Pretend that I will keep my betta in a bowl
      2. Move him up to 1.77 gal filtered tank
      3. Move him to a 5 gallon tank.
      4. He lives a happy life.

But seeing all the fish in such a horrible and terrible state hurt me so much, I'm not much of a fish expert but it's incredibly visible on how much they suffered. Yes they are tough but people see that toughness in the wrong way and tend to treat them horribly even if they survive. :(
