Hey guys, I will be staying in Lewiston in mid June if you are familiar with that area. Do you think steelhead will be running in that area of t he Trinity at that time or will it be too early?

      Hey Jonathan… Luke Geraty here.
Mid-June can definitely have some steelhead in it… usually a lot of smaller fish (half pounders) with a few adults around too. The summer steelhead seems usually better in July, but I’ve got fresh adults in June too.
One issue will be the flows, as there could be MASSIVE high water at that time… but they don’t usually last all summer and you just need to either (1) time your fishing when it’s lower or (2) go with a drift boat! 😂

@@ConfluenceOutfitters Do you think water flows will still be an issue if I am float fishing? Longer leader and more weight since the fish will be closer to the bottom correct? What do you recommend on the business end, eggs, jigs etc..? Thanks for your time, highly appreciated!

@@jonathank5388 it’ll all depend on water color and flows. Egg imitations and stone flies will probably be good to go… or attractor patterns.

I’m about to fish the river here in a few days when I’m not hunting. Do you think I’ll have any luck? And if so what should I use

I think you'll probably hook some smaller fish and possibly have shots at adults! Hard not to throw a stonefly, egg, or small nymph... all of those have been working!

...what weight rods do you recommend for the Trinity...looking forward to my first steelhead on a fly rod...

For single-hand steelhead techniques, 6 and 7 weight are best. For spey, you can go as light as a 4wt but most folks use 5wt and 6wt rods. On the lower river during higher flows it's nice to have a 7wt spey rod.

I like that. You should book a trip if you like fishing and swimming 🥽🥽

The swimming part of the trip is optional. Luke just can't get enough of it though.
