They were specifically discussing the video footage of the 1908 fight in which Jack Johnson won the world heavyweight championship from Burns. th-cam.com/video/03MFOUgXRW4/w-d-xo.html
It wasn't being broadcast on TV or radio, telegraph was the medium used for "live" reporting of the fight around the world. The fight was being filmed and the video recording was cut off very close to the end of the fight. Yannis got it wrong when he said the broadcast was cut short, but clearly he was discussing the video footage which he has viewed. That's why they looked to see when TV broadcasts started, not because they forgot that radio existed.

35mph? Joe is underestimating the speed of car back then. Jack Johnson got the speeding ticket in 1938, in the same year the Mercedes-Benz W 125 set a world speed record of 269mph. You had commercially available cars that could do 140mph since 1929 (Duesenberg Model SJ).

It was not a broadcast but a recording of the fight that was stopped. Johnson fought the champion and was toying with him. He really could win whenever he wanted to. When he decided to end the fight they stopped recording. They did not want the world to see Johnson take the world heavyweight championship. The fight is on TH-cam if you are interested.

America banned him and Johnson didn’t fight there for the rest of his career he fought somewhere in Australia or Europe . when he returned they put him in jail for 8 months, all for winning the heavyweight championship years and years prior .
