- Its time for a new mallet in the shop! Watch as a craft this simple round head mallet in hickory. I use a traditional hand tool technique to cut the through mortise. The mallet head is turned on the lathe and attached to the handle using a walnut wedge.

I've seen woodworking videos before and they're always boring and stupid.... however I fucking love these videos! there's just something about them that I can't get enough of.. does anyone else get a nice feeling of satisfaction watching these?
watch "matthias wandel" hes great
Travis Heck you are not alone. The way he make his video makes it like a ASMS vid. It's amazing to watch & listen

Don Cresswell same
After the handle was put into the head then cut off I'm going why did he do that. Then as you went to place it onto the lathe, it all made sense. You didn't want the handle hole to get chewed up while turning the head. Great project Andy. Thanks for sharing...
Yeh, me too
Check out these great woodworking plans here: HootWood. com
You don't have to fill the hole. It is safe enough to turn with the hole in it. I didn't believe it either but I've done it a lot.
orbodman but what if the chisel got caught in the hole?
Because the wood turning
Making a mallet using a mallet . Malletmrising :)
more like malletseption
or the best of all, the metamallet
Ashley King I was looking for this comment, I was thinking the exact same thing... haha
you used a wooden mallet to assist in making a wooden mallet. but how did you make the first mallet in the first place??? hmm?
what came first? the chicken? or the egg?
It's The Chicken.
French4Assassin, the egg. you never said it had to be a chicken egg, and dinosaurs had eggs long before chickens. the real question is, which came first, ketchup or mustard? if you could find the answer that would be AWESOME.
Dammit. XD
shut up
I wanted to make a mallet but then i saw i needed a mallet
Dis Kid Kevin. Lol use a rock
T.R.I.B.O.. Team or a normal hammer

I identify as a hickory mallet.
Not as an attack helicopter?
odd766 no. I don't feel as if I have enough engine oil in my joints to identify as an attack helicopter.
Lol nerds, I sexually identify as a nuclear bomb specifically from Russia.
Top Pop Fop no gender is superior to another. I will forgive you for this microaggression if you acknowledge your privaledge in a post on tumblr.
Mr Rishi The Cookie I identify as a non burnt Jew from WW2
pls upload more often.
Can you make a video on how you sharpen your tools
you made great use of different angles to enhance the video of you carving the hole into the mallet - thank you!
A pro tip. In making a mallet it helps being a pro. Like a decade in furniture making for example.
;D
when he put the camera under the block as he was going through it, was I the only one who closed their eyes or squinted them? because I did 😂😂
I enjoy wood working, but I can't stand most of the TH-cam videos about it because they all talk way to much. But I love these because he just shows you. It's nice
How many splinters have you gotten in your lifetime?
TheGStick -more than 100- *1 thousandddddd*
First comment 3rd view
proof?
How do you acquire your "rare" wood? I say rare as in the wood you can't buy at lowes.
I like your videos because 1. You are very good at what you do. 2. You don't talk. You get right to it and don't take away from the project.
I was watching some hardcore metal and ended up here....and im not mad at all...its so fucking satisfying
So. Damn. Relaxing. Thank you Andy.
somehow this video makes me fall asleep.
mevius 16g I'm asleep
mevius 16g im falling asleep right now
Tristanbistan3 I'm asleep right now
Damn this channel and primitive technology are the best asmr
ikr
Just want to say I came from Matt from Demolition Ranch - Stayed for the artisan approach to wood working. I love the attention to details - chamfering the edges on the wedged portion. I enjoy the filmstyle - I actually kept blinking when the chisel broke through the mallet head (Felt like dust flying into my eyes). Keep it up, i really enjoy watching.
mkcrew2
I can't decide it was actually a wood piece or a butter block
That awkward moment when you need a mallet to make a mallet
At 9:40 he points the middle finger to the camera
so manly the wood chips get caught on his arm hair
Love your videos, it's so relaxing just to watch you make tools and other things.
uses a wooden mallet to make a wooden mallet
Harley Culwell video description says "it's time for a new mallet"
0:51 sees him using expo marker on wood, and gets triggered.
Beautiful mallet
8:01 im suprised that wasnt in a oddly satisfying video
He is using a wooden mallet to make a wooden mallet!!! WOODEN SEPTION!!!!
He's really good at getting the perfect camera angle
I like how he doesn't talk it keeps the video satisfying unlike other youtubers who talks after making every pieces of something
I love your channel and I think you do amazing work
5:37 wait... if mallets are used to make other mallets then how was the first mallet made..?
Jonathan Rychlik rocks
Irfan Zainul But if there where no mallets in the first place how would they make a mallet
T.R.I.B.O.. Team wow thanks you rock 2 😀🖒
Jonathan Rychlik a rock or a hard piece of wood
ohhhhhhhhhhh that makes sense
couldnt watch 5:50 without blinking
SATISFYING > 8:00 < SATISFYING
Loved the video!
Yo Andy, you should post some failed projects.
Curtis Twaddell he never fails
I don't know how I got to this part of youtube, but I never want to leave
He forgot the most important part
Safety glasses
Julio Leal because as the Crazy Russian Hacker would say "safety is number one priority"
Nicolas Akers as he puts liquid nitrogen in coke
Julio Leal He had his safety squints.
A master like him doesn’t need and safety glasses
boooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Used a mallet to make a mallet. Malletception. Which came first the mallet or the mallet?
~1:08 what type of vice or clamp is that? I've never seen anything like it.
Called a holdfast or third hand. Blacksmiths use them a lot also, with the pritchel hole on an anvil.
thank you.
This makes me wonna make one
same
does he get splinters alot? ik dumb question but is he really careful enough to not ever get splinters? I mean he deals with wood, wood gives you splinters. You know I'm just wondering.
lps .whipcream you develop callousness over alot of the hand with woodwork. years of doing it makes you skillfully cautious
hi I'm a 15 year old from Kentucky .I love your videos. your editing is really great. I was also wondering what kind of boots those are?
William Burke Same here.
Just fascinating!
Anyone else close there eyes or squinted a bit at 5:54
Nice, using a mallet to make a mallet👌🏻👍🏻
Making a wooden mallet with a wooden mallet

I takes a mallet to make a mallet
Who else squinted @ 6:09?
This channel is fantastic
*casually makes mallet while using mallet in some scenerios*
Andy your channel is very satisfying.Though I'll never attempt this. EVER. I still enjoy your videos.
Hey Andy. When you get 100,000 can you maybe do a face reveal?? We see your face but not you talk. Or maybe make something for a giveaway? Like so andy can see!
If you watch OffTheRanch videos he is seen talking with Matt
He does speak in the mortise and tenon strenght test. It's one of his first videos, really cool
Yeah true. Maybe a q&a???
Big D
Just a quick heads up- Pivoting a chisel to dig out material like what was done at the 3:30 mark is not a great idea in terms of keeping a sharp tool. It isn't terrible but will dull your tool much quicker as you continue to bend the sharpened edge further and further. I have really been enjoying your videos btw! Just something that I've found in the past few years.
I'm new to this channel is there a reason you don't talk in your videos
makes it more relaxing in my opinion
Yeah, there's no need to
Thomas Sorice actions speak louder than words
Andy I have seen many works before even had someone come in who was amazing that worked with his hands like you and definitely is very awesome. I like that you put Your craft into rather just use machines and to me that absolutely Beautiful.Who ever sent your channel to me I can't Thank enough.Very much enjoyed Deb.👍
Dude I know you have drills I saw you using them making that axe target 🎯, LOL, I'm watching cause I'm going to make one! I saw this video of some guy made one from a tree all one piece, branch at a right angle, been looking but can't find one!
make a play button
Its so wierd that I love these videos. We used to do the same thing in 6th or 7th grade (working with wood, steel and stuff..). But for me, that class was boring. And I was watching your videos at that time! And I loved them! (Still do)
Am I the only one?
THIS VID IS SO SATISFYING PLS KEEP MAKING MORE VIDEOS
U JUST EARNED A SUB :D
About how many splinters do you get each project (smaller ones like utensils) because I've been thinking for a long time about getting into woodwork but I wanna know bout the reward to consequence ratio before getting myself into a project I'm not capable of finishing.
I fell asleep watching this video, IN A GOOD WAY. It was so relaxing for some reason. I love your format
Great video. Had interesting shots, no unnecessary music, a skillful craftsmen, and a nice mood. All-around good video.
Do you find yourself using both the curved and flat spokeshave equally? I don't know which to get (if not both).
I know work like this takes time so a video every day or two isn't possible with editing and all that. Still wish uploads were more frequent though, just really like this chanel. Looking forward to the next video!
I watched this nigga make a spoon and a this shit, I'm impressed keep it up
Are there any videos on how to make your workbench? I made one of my own not too far back but its really low grade and its pretty inaccessible, I really like your workbench design and especially the clamp holes you have.
Thanks for another great video Andy! I need to learn how to do this, it's absolutely amazing!
Andy Rawls is the great great great great great grandson of Primitive Technology!
Hey andy! You are making pretty nice videos and i like them. And i like that too that you do some of them in old school style and thats nice! But could you make some video or videos about how you sharpen your tools? Because i do pretty much woodworking too and i know that if your tools arent sharp, the work will be pretty.. Bad u know.
If you're ever looking for a apprentice you can definitely sign me up. No joke I live in Texas so I don't think location would be an issue.
so I saw your cameo on either vet ranch, demo ranch or off the ranch. can't remember. I'm hooked on all three of those channels and now yours. thanks. I'll just add another channel to my subscriptions. lol. great work and so relaxing to watch.
I just watched someone make a Hickory mallet for 13 minutes with no background music
You should make a wood carving starter pack give a way. You make me want to make things like that but I can’t afford the tools😩
never really thought i would be amazed at watching things be created out of a block of wood. I was extremely wrong!
