You can use an impulse response and amp sim to just jam on your guitar too instead of playing out loud through an amp. It's not just for recording and mixing.
@@matttaylor1449 I agree. free simulators, ir's, DAW's and VST's make the at home practice amp almost obsolete so long as you have a computer. better off buying a cheap used interface than a small amp!
@@jasonbone5121 It goes both ways, I guess. If you don't have a computer and have a practice amp, then just keep the amp and...live without a computer I guess. But if you already have a computer and an audio interface, there is no need to buy a practice amp.

Nice introduction to working with IR’s. I don’t have a dedicated studio space, and have neighbours, so a Torpedo Captor and IR’s means I still record music. 🤘

Free amp sims and impulses are SOOOO great for those of us who want to get into guitar, but don't have an even remotely good budget. I learned on them, and they're still a fantastic writing tool. If I can recommend what I like - Vadim Taranov's JCM800 amp sim, coupled with a TSE 808 overdrive, going into the Ownhammer Marshall Lynchback. For a grand total of 25 bucks, it's killer. And the Lepou Legion is a great substitute for the JCM sim to save even more money. Thanks for teaching me about this stuff years ago, Glenn!

Glenn thank you so much for this man, seriously. The sound you got after the EQ is so close to the tone I usually get to with Pulse. This is the best thing ever!
Yea, you created the best tone ever. I get my tone to sound just like this all the time. What a coincidence. It is the best tone ever and you are so awesome and great for creating it. I guess we would have to assume that anybody else who may have achieved that tone is amazing also. 😏

Gr8 Glenn! I loved the way you opened the ssl eq and did a little touch on the moment! I see some online mixing courses with well known mixers and all they are doing is A-B-ing through the chain and going "I did that cus of that and to achieve that" and you end up learning nothing because, what you have to learn is how to think, the systems of work for these things. There is a lot more value in seeing how to do a quick rough mix then reverse engineering an award winning mix (a bit off topic but this simple think makes you a good teacher). Thanks!
It's amazing what we can do these days. I've always been a bit of a gear head, and everybody used to hate that I used BOSS pedals. I never used amp sims on my GT boards because I didn't like them. Fact is, in the 90s, digital sucked. Whomever was the first person to think of using IRs for guitar recording deserves lifetime tickets to any rock show anywhere ever. Engineers have been using them for convolution reverbs for years. Why not guitars. This is the 21st Century man. Tube amps are awesome, but being a snob about them these days is not going to fill your toolbelt or help you make great records.
3:13 Glenn, x86 vs x64 depends on your daw rather than operating system, you can install old Cubase 5 (32bit) on Win 10 which is 64bit and it wouldn't load 64bit plugins. Other than that, killer tutorial \m/
Good point, I think it's just the implication that typically you'd be running x64 software on an x64 version of the operating system - of course there are exceptions as I know some people still use 32bit DAWs due to older plugins they use but which aren't available as 64bit.

The principle was known for ages, but convolution tends to be very heavy in terms of computation, so it wasn't feasible to use it as broadly as we can today.
If anyone is still watching this today, setting your Amp and Cab sims routing to Stereo or Dual Mono on your Guitar Bus will all you to use just two VSTs (Amp/Cab) for all the guitars in that bus. This saves a lot of time because if you need to make an on-the-fly change, you can just go to the bus VST and it will apply to all the tracks in there.

Make a gear guide: Include your picks for mics, amps, pedals, plug-ins, mixers, interfaces, speakers, etc. at different price points ($1,000). You've got a lot of great gear recommendations on the channel but it would be nice if they could all be put in one regularly-updated document.

I'd experiment with sending different signals to the impulse response. How would a saw synth sound, or a vocal track, maybe the drum room mic and then blend it with the other mics. It would definitely add some distortion and crunch to anything you send through it and make a unique sound.
Thanks glenn!! This was very informative! Even for a guy who is sum what versed in ir's this was a perfect refresher coarse! Keep it up! You help me keep going bro! I'm jelly your down there w Mr.Marvelous! Shake his hand and tell him hackers says cheers, for me! Lol ps. When you gonna do a live chat. I saw 66samus do a 2 hours live chat. And it was hilarious! Can't wait til you do a few!!
Kool stuff. i just recently discovered this pulse thingy from your channel actually heh. never knew it even existed now my making my own custom pulse's
holy shit palm mute farts have been the bane of my existence forever.
You have saved my recordings from sounding flat! IR’s are what we’re missing.
Great Video! Thanx!
Wow Glenn, thank you for this tips!
How about bass IR's? Have you done any of those in your studio?like darkglass ir or something awesome like that?
Realy could use more on bass tone . How in metal its good to switch from clean to distorted for different parts of the same song.
You mean new bass string impulses?
@@JasonCGuitarOfficialmaybe we aren't speaking about free ir here i guess xD
@@vonStahlhelm good troll try, but i change my strings every 4 months

Question about monitors, how can you tell if they are “flat”, giving you the “full story”?
"on the 4k, we're gonna boost that up a bit"
*Boosts it into ear destruction territory*
Thanks Glenn. I love my Lancaster Audio IRs! I've been using Pulse with Waves GTR (cab bypassed) for a bit. Also, don't know if it got mentioned, but Studio One has its native "Ampire" plug in which you can load up all the IRs fairly easily. I've had good results. As was mentioned down below -- recording IRs -- that would be a great tutorial. : )
Great! Thanks !
great, thank you!
10:44 roar! Sounds like my real set up!!! This shit is crazy!!!
That's what I miss about using VST plugins when I switched over to pro tools I couldn't have the option of dropping dll in the VST folder you got to basically install everything and you got to make sure the file works and sometimes pro tools can screw up its axx files
slamdeathgrindmachine God forbid you have some waves plugins in more than one wavshell, I can't get most of my waves plugins to load on protools if I don't do a manual rescan every time.
Make a gear guide: Include your picks for mics, amps, pedals, plug-ins, mixers, interfaces, speakers, etc. at different price points ($1,000). You've got a lot of great gear recommendations on the channel but it would be nice if they could all be put in one regularly-updated document.
I love you, Glenn.
@8:25 the "it's that %@#*ing easy" look. LOL
Thank you!!!!
Ok... I'm into mixing for a 2 years now... But I have probably the very basic question... Why do I need VST2 or VST3? What's the difference?
Hi Glen. What theme are you using on Reaper? Looks pretty cool. Thanks, keep up the great work and F-You !!
Fusion beta
@@SpectreSoundStudios Thanks !!
Can't wait for the monster tutorial
This guy looks like Benjamin Franklin in the reincarnation.
Glenn has better hair
Or Peter Griffin from Family Guy :D
This guy’s Canadian. Have some respect for our forefathers.
Glenn has always reminded me of Dr. Okun from “Independence Day”.
In it?
Ahh I wish you would have uploaded this a month ago lol this had some good info that I had to destroy the internet to find a month ago
I had to figure it out the hard way too. Seems so simple once you know.
