The fpga world seems like a weird place to grift. It’s not exactly the most lucrative space and many people in the community have a lot of technical knowledge which easily exposes fake devs. Maybe they should move to the crypto space lol.
From what I understand from Analogue and people like Zerohimself and Porkchop express - there is a surprising amount of money and interest in FPGA. Remember that a bunch of mods, memory card replacements and almost all ODEs and Flashcarts use them too.
You'd think when retro geeks at Atari Age could ID a old capture card in a transparent shell, grifters would learn to stay away from that scene. I think the best case scenario is that something gets made but it goes the way of Polymega, ditching FPGA and going for a software emulation box when they realize they're in over their heads.
Seems like the MiSTer is becoming more popular/well-known, although still niche and an enthusiast device, so it looks like some grifters have started entering the space, feels like this already happened with retro games in general a few years ago with stuff like Wata and now the recent nonsense with LGR, and now they are trying to grift on the FPGA crowd as well.
I am glad I watched PCN's interview with the guy behind this project. Someone in the chat comments said this same guy was also once involved in trying to make a 8k video camera but was a terrible value. And many people did not even get their camera after paying. He also sent a copyright strike to someone trying to warn people about the camera company
When I saw a comment from Modern Vintage Gamer calling out the jump cuts, I could tell it was gonna go downhill from there. Now comments are being deleted, and the second video is just as sketchy.
Kevtris made a forum post about this, pointing out that the LEDs aren't connected to anything, that the USB on the front only connects to the USB port on the back, just being a "fancy pass through". He said the FPGA isn't connected to anything, that you couldn't run one on a two layer board, etc etc. I think it's pretty much settled that this thing is a scam.
Honestly, it should have been a red flag when they used the SEGA brand in the name. SEGA’s still an active company, and they’re using the company’s logo and name in their own - even on a basic level, that’s trademark infringement.
I think it might be a clever marketting campaign with a real product yet... Lets see, and I think that's why the pre-order is like 3 euros lol. I am not mentioning the company yet - I don't want to spoil it here. Lets see!
I saw your comment on twitter earlier today and it's was driving me nuts all day. I didn't think there was some hidden message with the 3 euros and now I can't think of anything besides Half Life 3. lol
@@kosmosyche The value of 3 euros isnt the clue, its more a case of its such a tiny amount (and the actor in this video is a well known Spanish comedian), it's a small token amount that could be refunded without too much cost etc (I think). Yeah, I highly suggest never pre-ordering. If something is actual true and working then all your missing out on is time & maybe a small discount. You'll lose more if it's fake and will cause you more stress than what it's worth.
I don't see the point of a FPGA that is "Sega Only". Also, the founder (?)/presenter looks like one of those road beggars with a sign "Former Intellivision employee. Need money for FPGA project!"
I think there are for sure people out there that would love a Sega specialized FPGA console, especially one that covers every one of their main home consoles, and double especially one that has Dreamcast FPGA, which along with DS & PS2 FPGA, is just about the most coveted FPGA core, plus it was originally advertised to have support for every cart and optical media type for all the systems. It will most likely be Analogue that puts out the first DC FPGA console though, work has been quietly going on in the background with that in mind for a few sometime now, Electronash I believe is his name, he has certain elements working in verilog, so progress is being made slowly, and Analogue will have something cooking I bet, not sure whether Replay 2 has enough LE for the DC though, the DC is way more powerful than people think, I think the DS will be available in FPGA before DC is.
Yep this looks very sus and what was in the master system cartridge also dreamcast looked to perfect smells of emulation, input lag so bad to me looks like someone else was controlling the game.

Outside of the obvious being a scam, there is a a small chance this is actually situation where they run out of money and they need help to complete it. So MAYBE in the best scenario those cuts are to not show how huge of an input delay and loading is right now (and they are gauging interest if they should continue). Also not even having a complete shell design is insane. Seems like obvious scam, but a tiny fraction of possibility for it being real and they probably out of money
