The phrase that Trevelyan used about the Irish Famine being the work of “an all-wise and merciful providence” smacks so much of Thatcher and the Protestant thing that good works don’t matter, only faith, or, in her case, fanatical conviction. I can’t help also thinking, though, that the miners’ strike could not be similarly policed today, with all the camera phones.

This photo reminds me an interview with a great artist Jay Munly:
"(...)Billy Bragg, he did something for me.
What kind of effect did he have on you?
That was when people went to concerts and stood in line. So we were out at the Rainbow Music Hall all day. And all of a sudden this gentleman comes riding up on a bicycle with powered speakers on his back and he starts playing songs. He's like, "Oh, I'm playing tonight," and no one believed him. I don't think his album had even come out in the States yet. I think his EP had come out, so no one knew who he was, but he was on stage a few hours later. I was young at that time. I don't know what I was -- eleven, twelve. I wasn't even a teenager. " :)

    • @GuitarRocker2008
      @GuitarRocker2008 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmm did some research and I will concede that the Jacobite version wasn't the original but i've found that both the song you refer to and a song called "my love is in germany" claims the tune (not the lyrics) was composed by some Holland Colonel around the same time. Though looking at the two articles the levellers one seems to have much better citations and evidence so I am happy to concede that point as well until further evidence can be found.

    • @gaconnochie
      @gaconnochie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm not sure that you were wrong Wisdom Pen. As far as I know the original song was an anti-Jacobite song just not the version widely known in Scotland which is a later Robert Burns version - which though still blaming the Jacobites was more concillatory but the older song he based it on is vehemently anti-Jacobite and anti-Catholic with the lyrics
"With the Pope you covenant, as they say, as they say,
With the Pope you covenant, as they say,
      With the Pope you covenant,
      And Letters there you sent,
Which made your Prince present to array."
If anyone actually knows a version that predates the 1745 Rebellion then it'd be interesting to see the lyrics

Protest songs have existed as long as people have oppressed each other. I think Billy would be one of the first people to say what a huge influence Guthrie was on him but why is that a bad thing? Even if you don't like him, I think his message is an important one and he probably brought Guthrie's work to people who wouldn't have otherwise known of him. That's got to be a good thing.

Thatcher supported Pinochet throughout the 80's; describing him as an "extraordinary world statesman"...She also resisted the ANC in South Africa and described Nelson Mandela as a terrorist...If you think anything Britain did contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union, you're deluded

@pgconn You seem to imply that freedom is just sufferage, it is not and what was acheved by the Barons at runnymede was far more important then voting rights. They muzzled the artbitary power of the king through the law. All later developments were dependent on the seeds of accountability planted that day. If the matter had been decided in favour of the King then England might have ended up more like the starving, corrupt autocracy that was pre-revoulutinary France.

There's a difference between Hilter and a standard issue conservative/libertarian politian. Anyone who can't see that is morally blind. I'm not say that's you, but it applies where it applies. For what it's worth, my original post was appropriate for the previous video I had watched showing hate filled fools dancing in the street to celebrate a public figures death. This song was in bounds. Should have listened to my impulse to remove my comment. Have a good life. Let's not talk anymore.

Well... actually Hitler was elected and he was to the right of Thatcher herself so I don't know why you put him in. Also, Michael Foot was returned to Parliament from 1945 to 1992, so he was elected a good few times, more than Thatcher herself seeing as we don't vote from Prime Ministers, we vote for MPs and then the leader of the party with the most MPs becomes Prime Minister. Nnnnn'Kay, you silly little man peach?

So the government has no responsibility to help those that cannot help themselves, due to decades of a total lack of opportunity? Here I was hoping that we were moving forward as a society, and not looking back to the 1820s! The public services only became private companies because Thatcher sold them, they are ours because they were established by governments that saw the necessity for these utilities. Did David Lloyd George intend water to be owned by an individual, ...

@FeadogGaeilge Freedom is an English concept.
No brother, you are wrong. Actually, LACK of freedom is an English concept. Your empire has occupied half the world. You think you did that by offering them tea? Noooo. You did that by killing. And murdering. And torturing. And raping. And oppressing rights. And stealing land. All that good stuff.
You are not to blame for something other people did 100 or more years ago. But at least be concious of your history.

@DeniqueCoelum was it not Jesus who said "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." I don't agree with organised religion, but i do believe in an afterlife. And i believe that for me to get to that afterlife i must fight for justice in this world! even if that involves bloody revolution. Being part of the lumpenprolateriat is wrong. Not fighting for a better world is wrong. Through my deeds in this life will i reach the next.

@jdw1980 A fair point which seems to be summed up as: content yourself to be a person of contempt. Why settle for sub-existence when there is much wealth stolen from us? There is no excuse for child, or fuel poverty: not at all. Sometimes, you have to fight for what is right, not sit on your bum and take the shit dropped from the rich. Thatcher killed UK industry, destroyed unions, and worst of all deregulated the financial sector. You must please start to think outwith the daily mail.

Thatcher was against apartheid? Where did you get this from/ She was an active supporter of Botha & De Klerk. Why do you think the latter is coming to the funeral? Thatcher also classified the ANC as a terrorist organisation. It is interesting to see how the Thatcherites are already trying to rewrite history. Thatcher's legacy is simple: Commodity over Community.

So "socialism/communism do not work in practice". Says who?
    Bishop, I can fly
The tailor said to the Bishop
    Just watch how it works.
    And he climbed with things
    That looked like wings
To the broad, broad roof of the chuch.
    The Bishop passed by
    It's all a lie.
    Man his no bird
    No one will ever fly,
The Bishop said to the tailor.

There is a difference between private and personal property. Private is when you can capitalize on your property whereupon personal property is mere usage, even though you might not own your own house in the communist age you will still consider it yours if you sleep there every night. I Might be wrong but that's how I look at it.
