Beware the single-sided-analysis, oh wait, that's James Corden, Ricky Gervais is the Batman we need... :) Billy B. & Frank Turner are both the Batmans we need AND the Batmans we get, hurray! Peace and love and happiness, --Barry
I first heard this many years ago, and I was helpless to do anything but listen in wonder at this absolute f🐣cking work of songwriting genius. This carries the hallmark of every great song: it requires only one listen to fall in love with it. It doesn't need to grow on you. God bless you, Mr. Billy Bragg. Were this the only song you'd ever written, I would still call you a genius, but there were many more great songs from you.
I am enjoying the love songs and that but the song that really gets to me is "My YOUNGEST SON came home today..I burst out crying the first time I heard it.
I was performing Tank Park Salute at a folk club open night. Had been practising it for ages with no issues. On stage with the audience tuned in. It was like I was reading the lyrics for the first time, and towards the end of the song I legged it off the stage in tears. 😳🙄😳 Love your work Billy.
I love u so much that sometimes it's such I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe. Workers playtime was my first album by billy bragg.I bought it when it came out in 88.I first heard it on Wunh college radio.
It was actually Waiting for the great leap forwards that made me want the album. When I heard the rest,I was blown away.My roomate said that it sounded like he was deliberately adding the english accent to songs.
My friend said she could see no way ahead And I was probably better off without you She said to face up to the fact that you weren't coming back And she could make me happy like you used to But I'm sorry to say I turned her away Knowing everything she said was true And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do There's something inside that hurts my foolish pride To visit the places we used to go together Not a day goes by that I don't sit and wonder why Your feelings for me didn't last forever Girl I love you so much that sometimes it's such I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do Yeah, that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do So keep that phone out of my way for the things I must say Are empty if you don't believe they're true That's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do Yeah, that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do Girl, I love you so much that baby it's such I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do Yeah, that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
Why would he need to be "adding" an English accent when he is English?? I saw Billy Bragg back at the Dome in Brighton in 1990 with the Beatnigs and Michelle Shocked. Frikking great.
+loquaciousbunny It seems like he adds that working class London accent. He doesn't do it on all songs, e.g. Sugar Daddy, The Space Race Is Over. On those songs he has a more neutral (closer to the BBC) accent.
Charles Gervasi i think its more likely he is making a conscious effort to make his accent more neutral in those songs. I'm pretty sure he's from Dagenham and sounds quite working class in interviews.
Listening to this every few days is the price I pay for loving those old Ricky Gervais XFM shows the way I do

.
My friend said she could see no way ahead
And I was probably better off without you
She said to face up to the fact that you weren't coming back
And she could make me happy like you used to
But I'm sorry to say I turned her away
Knowing everything she said was true
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
There's something inside that hurts my foolish pride
To visit the places we used to go together
Not a day goes by that I don't sit and wonder why
Your feelings for me didn't last forever
Girl I love you so much that sometimes it's such
I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
Yeah, that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
So keep that phone out of my way for the things I must say
Are empty if you don't believe they're true
That's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
Yeah, that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
Girl, I love you so much that baby it's such
I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe
And that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do
Yeah, that's the price I pay for loving you the way that I do

I love this song, but walking a mile with a stone in your shoe really isn’t that long. I’ve done that before. He must not love her all that much.
