Probably because it's not a great idea to teach kids that "If you're a horrible person, you will be brutally murdered in a violent and horrifying fashion". Then again, I also think even at the time, it really scared the fuck out of kids. I'd be lying if I didn't understand what you mean, it really does seem like villains get off so easy. "I may have murdered 400,000,000 people and taken over the world with an iron fist and singlehandedly caused nothing but destruction but I'm still a human" and then EVERYONE lets them off easy/with jail time.

Saw this movie as a kid and now, as a 25-year-old adult, this scene still fucks with my head a little bit.
Also, anyone else know about the *African Wild Dogs*? I bring them up because, in their packs, the adults will make sure that the children get to feed first. Meaning that, if you're unfortunate enough to get caught by a pack of them, their adorable babies will be the last thing you ever see before you are torn apart and Eaten Alive.
I'm thinking that THIS is the insect-version of that and that knowledge is now ALSO fucking with my head.

"A Bug's Life" has really been sticking with me lately. For only Pixar's second theatrical outing, it has a unique thematic depth, outstanding and creative visuals, unforgettable voice performances, and especially satisfying payoffs. Plus, it's arguably Pixar's only adaptation of an existing story (Aesop's Fables, Seven Samurai), and a pretty dang neat one at that.
I don't hear this Pixar gem being talked about nearly enough, and that's too bad.

There's just something so primal about scenes where a character gets eaten by something even though it doesn't happen very often in film .... Quint in Jaws, Scar in Lion King, this right here. Like this is how it ends for this character, about to be something's next meal in the circle of life, oddly terrifying. I will distinguish that the hyenas were characters with thoughts and motivations so that's scary as hell vs the shark and bird here where it's just a thing that's hungry and you picked a bad time to show up. Not sure which is scarier. Hopper actually reminds me of Quint: Quint was eaten by the one thing he spent his life terrified of and trying to kill as many of as possible and Hopper gets eaten by his one fear that he actually survived before the film as evidenced by his scar.
